ISRO successfully test-fires scramjet engine
The Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV), a sounding
rocket (research rocket) with a solid booster carrying
advanced scramjet engines, was successfully flight-tested
from the launch pad of the Sathish Dhawan Space Centre,
also known as Sriharikota Range (SHAR), at Sriharikota on
Sunday.
This first experimental mission of Indian Space Research
Organisation is aimed at the realisation of an Air Breathing
Propulsion System which uses hydrogen as fuel and
oxygen from the atmosphere air as the oxidiser.
The mission had a smooth countdown of 12 hours as the
ATV with scramjet engines weighing 3277 kg lifted off at 6
a.m.

The U.S. will push for Indias membership of the
Nuclear Suppliers Group when the issue is taken up

Centre junks grade pay for pay matrix
The phrase pay band and grade pay, coined during
the British Raj to determine the salaries of the
bureaucrats is history. Come September, they will be

IMD gets its August forecast wrong
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has erred on
its forecast for monsoon rain in August. In June, it said
that India would get more rain than it usually did but as of
August 31, the country got significantly less or 8.5 %
less rain than whats normal for the month, according
to the IMD website.
While this wouldnt affect water availability for agriculture
and the storage in reservoirs, it suggests that the
agencys weather models are still not robust enough to
capture changes in global climate that could affect the
Indian monsoon.

Justice J Chelameswar, one of the five senior
most judges of the Supreme Court, did not take
part in Collegium's meeting on Friday to discuss
various issues including the Memorandum of
Procedure(MoP).
Justice Chelameswar, who had written a
dissenting verdict with regard to non-transparency
in the collegium system of appointment, has also
reportedly shot off a letter to Chief Justice T S
Thakur expressing his inability to take part in the
meeting of the Collegium, which consists of five

Army Design Bureau formed to reduce

9 Rocket, Satellite in Florida
A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and its commercial
satellite payload were destroyed by an explosion at
their launch pad in Florida early Thursday (Sept. 1)
during a typically routine test.
The explosion occurred at 9:07 a.m. EDT (1307
GMT), as SpaceX was preparing to launch the
Amos-6 communications satellite for the Israeli
company Spacecom from a pad at the Cape
Canaveral Air Force Station on Saturday, Sept. 3.
At the time, SpaceX was conducting a static-fire
engine test on the Falcon 9. Such tests, which
typically precede each SpaceX launch, involve firing
the Falcon 9 rocket's first-stage engines while the
booster remains secured to the launch pad.

Auto sales jump in August ahead of festive

Auto sales expanded at a brisk pace for most firms

in August on the back of new models, attractive
schemes and larger dispatches ahead of the festive
season, show monthly sales data released by

India moved a step closer on Thursday towards
becoming a single customs union after a constitutional
amendment secured the approval of half of its state
legislatures.
The amendment for a uniform goods and services tax
(GST) was passed by parliament last month.
The GST is the most significant revamp of the tax
system since India's independence in 1947. It will
subsume a slew of central and state levies,
transforming the country into one of the world's largest
single markets and bumping up economic growth.

Capital Indias NBFC unit
AION Capital Partners Ltd, an India-focused
special situation fund, along with former senior
executives of GE Capital Pramod Bhasin and
Anil Chawla, announced on Thursday that it has
closed the acquisition of the commercial lending
and leasing business of GE Capital in India. The
terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
AION is an India-focused fund established by an
affiliate of Apollo Global Management, LLC
together with ICICI Venture Funds Management
Co. Ltd. The AION Fund with approximately
$825 million in committed capital is currently one
of the largest private equity funds in India.

Govt bonds receive bids worth $1.12 billion from foreign
investors
Government debt securities on Tuesday attracted bids worth a
staggering Rs.7,494 crore ($1.12 billion) from foreign investors as
against Rs.7,046 crore on offer in an online auction.
RBI allows banks to sell stressed
assets to NBFCs, other lenders
Banks can now sell their stressed assets
to other lenders, non-banking financial
companies and financial institutions in
addition to distressed-asset buyers, a
move the banking regulator said will
speed up the resolution of bank bad loans.

The auction was conducted on NSEs e-bid platform from 1530
hours to 1730 hours after the close of market hours.
At the end of the two-hour auction, all the 27 bids were declared
successful. The debt auction quota gives overseas investors the
right to invest in the debt up to the limit purchased. The total
investment in government debt has reached Rs.1,36,954 crore till
Friday, which was 95.11% of total permitted limit of Rs.1.44
trillion. Consequently, the exchange had decided to conduct an
auction for the allocation of unutilised debt limits to the tune of
Rs.7,046 crore.
