Objective:

The objective was to determine the voltage at each node, current through each resistor,
and the power dissipated in each resistor if a 10 volt DC source is placed as shown during lab.
Also, determine the current being supplied by the source.

Procedure:

The procedure was as follows:

1. Calculate what the voltage and current should be at each resistor and current in each loop,

based on the 10 volt DC source and the resistor values (using node voltage method).

2. Simulate the circuit in PSPICE and compare values to step 1.

3. Collect all equipment and components needed for lab.

4. Measure and record value of all resistors.

5. Connect circuit as required.

6. Measure and record values of v1, v2, v3, I1, I2, I3.

7. Calculate Powerdis

2
Calculations:

Given:

Voltage source = 10 Volts

R1 = 1 k W
R2 = 4.7 k W
R3 = .68 W
R4 = 8.2 k W
R5 = .1k W
R6 = 1 k W

The following calculations were used:

Kirchoff Voltage Law (KVL)

(voltages in any given loop) = 0

Kirchoff Current Law (KCL)

(current at any node) = 0

From using the node voltage method and KVL, the following equations were derived:
(R6 + R2 + R4)I1 + (-R4)I2 + (-R2)I3 = 10
(-R4)I1 + (R1 + R3 + R4)I2 + (R1)I3=0
(-R2)I1 + (-R1)I2 + (R1 + R2 + R5) I3 = 0

From using the node voltage method and KCL, the following equations were derived:
(-R2R6 R5R6 R2R5)V1 + (R5R6)V2 + (R2R6)V3 = -10*(R2R5)
(R1R4)V1 + (-R1R4 R2R4 R1R2)V2 + (R2R4)V3 = 0
(R1R3)V1 + (R3R5)V2 + (-R3R5 R1R3 R1R5)V3 = 0

MATLAB was used to find the calculated values of v1, v2, v3, I1, I2, I3 (once the equations were
placed in matrix form, see appendix):

v1 = 4.21 V
v2 = 3.41 V
v3 = 3.65 V
I1 = 5.79 A
I2 = 5.37 A
I3 = 5.62 A

Final Readings in Lab:

The following circuit diagram analysis was completed in PSPICE and values calculated:

The following table displays calculated values in addition to calculated Power (from PSPICE
values and observed values):

Note the difference in calculated values (PSPICE) and observed values.

Value Needed Value Observed Powerdis (kWatts Powerdis (kWatts

Component (kOHM) (kOHM) calculated) measured)
R1 1 0.9 0.06 0.07
R2 4.7 4.7 0.14 0.14
R3 0.68 0.6 59.30 66.57
R4 8.2 8.1 5.30 5.33
R5 0.1 0.1 0.58 0.63
R6 1 0.9 33.52 36.86
Value
Calculated Value Observed
Current (Loop) (mAmps) (mAmps)
I1 5.79 5.81
I2 5.37 5.38
I3 5.62 5.64
Value
Calculated Value Observed
Voltage (at point) (Volts) (Volts)
V0 10 10
V1 4.21 4.24
V2 3.41 3.43
V3 3.65 3.68

NOTE: The difference is value calculated and value observed is due to the variation in the
resistance of the resistors (10% max variance in resistors).

Conclusion:
The value of v1, v2, v3, I1, I2, I3 can be calculated accurately using node voltage method,
KVL, and KCL.
