The Global Goals

The Global Goals are 17 Goals that were agreed to by 193 world leaders in September 2015,
after the Millennium Development Goals came to an end. If these goals were indeed
reached by 2030 it would mean no more extreme poverty, climate change and inequality.
These 17 goals are also known as the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, or SDGs
(Sustainable Development Goals). These 17 Goals are:
1. No Poverty
2. Zero Hunger
3. Good Health and Well-being
4. Quality Education
5. Gender Equality
6. Clean Water and Sanitation
7. Affordable and Clean
Energy
8. Decent work and
Economic Growth
9. Industry, Innovation,
and Infrastructure
10. Reduced Inequalities
11. Sustainable Cities and
Communities
12. Responsible
Consumption and
Production
13. Climate Action
14. Life Below Water
15. Life on Land
16. Peace Justice and Strong Institutions
17. Partnership for the Goals
In this essay I will be taking about Global Goal #12 Responsible Consumption and production
and what I did to raise awareness and help fight for it, together with my partner Nienke
Hoomoedt.
Global Goal 12, Responsible consumption and Consumption is a goal that is trying limit the
waste produced by the food we eat and things we buy, and try and recycle as much as
possible. We have to learn to only buy what we need and eat anything we buy, without
wasting food that could be used. And if we have things that we do not need anymore, we
should recycle it without wasting products
Global Goal #12 is linked to the Millennium Development Goal 7 (Ensure Environmental
Sustainability), because this Goal also tried to reduce waste and keep our environment safe.

Goal 12/Awareness
There are 11 sub-targets that make up Global Goal 12. Most to be accomplished by 2030, while
others are supposed to be accomplished by 2020, and some have no date to be accomplished. One
of the sub-targets that I believe is the most important, is: By 2030, substantially reduce waste
generation through prevention, reduction, recycling, and reuse. This one basically states that by
2030, us humans should be reducing, reusing and recycling to prevent the amount of waste
generation. This is important, as the amount of waste mankind creates at the moment is starting to
grow and cause problems for us and the environment. If we reduced waste, even by the smallest, we
A
could ensure that all of mankind is able to have access to
something that is healthy to them, and the amount of waste
landing in oceans, that then it turn create a problem to our
environment. Another sub-target that I find is very important is:
By 2030, ensure that people everywhere have the relevant
information and awareness for sustainable development and
lifestyle in harmony with nature. This sub-target basically states
that people should know about the issue, and that people who
know about the issue should help inform others about it. (For
B more of the sub-targets visit www.globalgoals.org). This
is exactly what we did, together with my Partner Nienke.
We spent a few days designing and creating for different
posters, to raise awareness about the problem and help
inform all the students and teachers at our school about
everything that is happening in our world today. Our first
poster (A) was about choosing the right bin and helping
to recycle. We added three bins on the side and labelled
them Paper, Cans and General, so that people could get
an idea, and become motivated. By adding the slogan
Choose the Right Bin! we wanted to further extend this
memo, this is the same with the Help Make A Difference quote. Our second Poster (B) was based
more on facts. We added a few quotes and facts in C

order to inform student and teachers more about the

problem at hand. We added small images to make the
poster more eye-catching as well. We added the small
logo of the SDG Goal in the corner, so that they would
know what they are reading about. The Third and
Fourth Posters (C & D) are also there to inform people
D
abouth the issue, as well as encourage them to take
B action as well. We
hung these posters up all over school, and strategically placed
them in places we believed people would look.

Action
To support Global goal #12 (Sustainable Consumption and
Production) I could help Singapore keep their roads and
parks Clean. Keep Clean Singapore is a movement
organised by the Public Hygiene Council. Its key strategy is
to: Empower groups and individuals to take the lead in
driving initiatives that promote cleanliness and creating
opportunities for people to take action to help keep
Singapore clean (Keep Clean SG).
We were also planning to join Food from the Heart a Singapore-based, non-profit organisation that
is working on bridging the gap between Hunger & Food Wastage. One of their Programmes Is called
the Bread programme in which the organisers and other volunteers collect bread from bakeries
and hotels, that were not used throughout the day and package these in small packages. They then
deliver these to people in need of this food. When this movement
started they collected bread from around 37 bakeries, now it has grown
to over 100 bakeries and hotels. Over 1,700 volunteers have assigned
routes and collect bread from these bakeries and hotels, and deliver
them to people in need.
There are many different ways to help out In this programme, check out
their website https://foodheart.org/ to learn more about this amazing
movement.
We also decided to Hang up posters, raising awareness for Global Goal #12 (Sustainable
Consumption and Production), and encouraging others to stand up against food wastage.

On Saturday the 13th of May 2017. We went to

cashew MRT (on the downtown line) and spent on
hour cleaning the park and sidewalks, to help against
littering and wastage. All the volunteers, including
Nienke Hoomoedt, Emma Dashorst, Bianca
Spiegelberg and I gathered outside the MRT Station
at 7:30 am. The Organizers handed out Bags for
Garbage and bags for Recycle, as well as a pair of
tongs each and a towel. Between the four of us, we
Saturday 13th of May started with an empty garbage bag, as well as an
empty recycle bag. By the end of an hour, both of
these were full with many things, including many
cigarette stumps, candy wrappers, tissues, cans,
bottles and plastic bags. However, I also found an
old deflated bike tire, Nienke found a pair of
Workers gloves and Bianca found the top of a
watch. After we made our way to a pavilion, where
all of the volunteers gathered to give the organizers
our bags and we were given water bottles. We also
met the foreign Minister of Singapore and took
some pictures.
We enjoyed this experience so much, we decided to
Saturday 13th of May repeat this action, the week after, as we had found
some sign advertising it again. This is why, on the

20th of May 2017, we met at the visitors center of Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. We were again given
two bags, and walked through Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, cleaning up trash. We walked through
most of the park, only to find that there was little to no trash to be found. This made us quite happy,
as it shows that Singapore is on its way to becoming a greener and healthier environment for us all.
I was however quite surprised by this, as I was expecting quite a lot of rubbish, although we only
found a few cigarette stumps and tissues.

th
Saturday 20 of May

On Sunday the 28th of June 2017 we went to the clean up on car-free Sunday. This again was
organized for Keep Clean Singapore. In this event, some roads were blocked off to encourage car-
free traveling. We walked along boat quay and picked up trash, we realised that a lot of people go to
pubs at night and leave their trash lying around on the tables, which then get blown away and litter
the floors and bushes surrounding the pubs. This is very bad for the environment. Together we
collected over 16 kg of waste and 11 kg of recyclable waste, that being a whole lot considering the
surface we covered.

GESS Sustainability Action Week

On Sustainability Action Week we set up a booth containing only a few posters and Flyers, as we did
not want to waste paper, for nothing, as our topic was on less wastage. We also set up a laptop
showing the video we made on our action (1). We set up
7
4 small bins with the colours of different recycle options:
paper & cardboard, glass, aluminium & cans, plastic. We
explained to people what these meant and our findings
that people in Singapore often dont recycle properly and
informed them about the issue of wasting. They were
then allowed to choose a small bin for themselves, and
help raise awareness against waste and recycling (2). We
also had a poster that had four of the targets our goal
wanted to achieve on it, as well as hanging up posters
that we made the weeks before (7).
Together with Bianca and Emma, who were researching Global Goal 15 (Life on Land) we then
collected a lot of scrap paper from classrooms around the school and stuck them together with the
written on pages facing each other, to create a page that was blank on both. We then cut them into
quarters and placed around 10 pages on top of each other and hole punched them in the corner.
After this we tied a ribbon through the hole punch,
creating a reusable booklet, for others to use. To 1
raise awareness for the issue we then created front
covers for all of them with different quotes and 5

pictures. Including a melting earth with piles of

waste on top. Some of the pictures included: Paper,
6
cans, General, Choose the right bin; Keep Singapore 2
3
Clean, Dont Waste; Reduce, Reuse, recycle, Dont
Waste. At our booth we then explained to people
how they could use these booklets and recycle
paper and make them themselves. They were then 4

allowed to choose one and take it to use (3) (See

page 7 for pictures showing the process of the
making of the booklets).
We also printed small bookmarks that had a quote on one side, and I support Global goal 12,
Responsible Consumption and Production on the other. As well as, another book mark that had a
small explanation of our goal. I also printed out some stickers, raising awareness for recycling (4).
The week of Sustainability Action, I started re-growing a spring onion from the scraps you get in the
kitchen, and at the presentation we explained how you can do this with many other vegetables, do
you can reuse the vegetables instead of throwing them away and wasting them (5).
During our research we also found that if you have a piece of plastic that has the recycle sign, with
the number 6 inside of It you can cut out a piece, draw any design you want onto it and put it in the
oven. It then shrinks into a hard plastic, and you can use it as a keychain or a decorative item (6).

Reflecting on our experiences

I believe we did quite well on raising awareness and taking action for Global Goal 12
(Responsible Consumption and Production), as a lot of people who came to our booth, were
very interested in the projects and products we had to show them and agreed to helping
spread the word. I believe our posters also
helped raise more awareness about the
issue.
Our action with the organisation Keep
Clean Singapore also has a positive impact
on the environment here in Singapore. We
were able to clean a lot of parks and raise
awareness whilst doing so. I believe that if
we all work together, we can make a
difference on our world.
I had a great time working on our booth and helping raise awareness and I believe this
attitude also had an impact on the end result. I would love to do something like this again
with a different goal and help people learn about this too. Overall, my favourite part of the
whole experience, was taking action and helping fight against the problem. I enjoyed
helping make Singapore become a better place, by cleaning up the community and would
definitely do it again if I had the opportunity.

Conclusion
This Problem that we are facing could be resolves, if we just informed everyone about the
issue and got them to spread the word and take action and against the issue. We could
implement strategies that would reduce the amount of food people buy and then waste and
make sure everyone works together on making our world a better place for us and our
environment.
