FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

In light of conversation circulating in our community over graduation dress code, Davie County
Schools would like to provide some additional details that have not been shared. A request to
wear a particular military dress uniform at the Davie County High School graduation was recently
denied, but please be assured this was not a knee-jerk decision. Davie County Schools agreed
earlier this week to allow military uniforms (dress blues) under the traditional cap and gown,
which are in line with the required attire worn by other graduates.

The initial decision was made by school officials, but due to the uniqueness of the situation, other
individuals including school ROTC leaders, retired military members, and local recruiting officers
for the U.S. Navy were consulted regarding the decision. All of these individuals noted that
graduation is not a military ceremony and wearing the full uniform could draw attention to a
particular student and would not conform to the spirit of recognizing the entire class. Military
officials advised that wearing dress blue military attire under a graduation gown during a high
school graduation ceremony is acceptable. The school system also offers the opportunity for
students entering the military to wear different colored cords that represent the different branches
of the military. Several graduates will be wearing these special cords on Saturday during the
graduation ceremony.

Graduation is a time to celebrate the completion of high school requirements and marks the
uniform accomplishment of all graduates being honored at the event. Leading up to graduation,
our students have received numerous awards and scholarships and have been recognized for
their accomplishments and for their plans after high school during several different ceremonies.
Attending a graduation ceremony in War Eagle Stadium is special, and our students and families
respect one another, from the way they dress to the way they conduct themselves with dignity
throughout the ceremony.

This Saturday morning, June 10, will mark a very special occasion for the 395 graduates of the
Class of 2017 and their families as they celebrate the culmination of their education and transition
into life after high school. Our students will continue their education at a university or community
college, serve their country in the military, or go straight to work. Whatever path they choose, we
wish them the very best. Please join us in congratulating all of our graduates.
