locatingfeaturesbasedonlyonobservationandexperience.Withlotsofpracticethiscanleadtogoodresults,buteveryonecanbenefitfromaroadmapthathelpsthem
workfasterandbetter.

Step1Fittheskull

Wefirstneedtogettheskulltofitthevolumeofthereferenceportraitsupplied.TurnontransparencyandadjusttheproportionswithalargeMovebrush.Theareasof
theskullthatshouldbesuperficial(ienearthesurface)aretheeyeorbits,thezygomaticarch(cheekbone),bridgeofthenoseandforehead.Therestoftheskullhas
muscle,fatorcartilagebetweenitandthesurface.Itisimportanttoappreciatewheretheskullisclosesttothesurfacesowecanusetheseaslandmarkswhen
constructingaportrait.

Step2Placethemasseter

Themasseteristhefirstoftwoskeletalmusclesthatweneedtoplace.Skeletalmusclesconnectbonetoboneandarticulateajoint(asopposedtofacialmuscleswhich
articulatetheskintocreateexpression).Inthiscaseweareconnectingthemandible(jaw)tothezygomaticarch.Themassetercreatessignificantsurfaceformontheface
andneedstobelocatedcorrectly.InZBrush,blockintheshapewithyourpreferredgeometrycreationmethod,thensubdivideanddetail.

Step3Understandthetemporalis

Thetemporalisisoursecondmuscleofmastication(chewing).Thismusclecombinedwiththemasseter,givehumansawiderrangeofmotionforbitingandchewing.
Thetemporalisisalarge,distributedfanshapedmusclethatanchorstotheskullalongacrescent(thetemporalline)thatstretchesfromtheupperlateralcornerofthe
orbitbacktobehindtheear.Thisdistributedmusclebodyconverges,focusingitspower,andpassesbehindthezygomaticarch,grabbingontotheanteriorpointofthe
mandiblecalledthecoronoidprocess.

Step4Constructthenosecartilage

Thenoseexhibitsanamazingamountofvariationinlife.Itisimportanttounderstandthatdespitethisvariety,allnosesarebuiltfromthesamethreepiecesofcartilage
andasmallbitoffat.Theseptalcartilageestablishesthemidlineofthenose.Thecomplexshapeofthealarcartilagecreatestheballofthenose,andthelateralcartilage
createsthesidewallsofthenose.Finallytofunnelintheairwehaveawedgeoffatthatcreatesthenostrilofthenose.Usingyourbestconstructionskills,constructthis
geometryoverthenasalopeningoftheskull.

Step5Placetheeyeball

Anadulthumaneyeballisapproximately24mmindiameter,thereissmallvariationinthisbutitisaveryusefulaverage.Themostcommonmistakeinpeoplesportraits
(inCGanyways),isthattheyalwaysmaketheeyeballtoolarge,wedgingagrapefruitintotheorbitandthentryingtogettheeyelidstofitproperly.Here,withacorrectly
sizedsphere(doitvisuallyasourskullisnottoscale)centretheeyeintheorbit,andmoveitforwardtothepointwheretheboneoftheorbitstillprotectsit.

Step6Makeeyelidsusingtarsalplates

Theeyelidshavetwostiffplatesofcartilageinthemcalledtarsalplates.Theseformthefoundationofthelidsandareanchoredtotheorbitsbysomethingcalledthe
canthalligaments.Themedial(inner)canthalligamentisvisibleonthesurfaceandsocreatesimportantsurfaceform,thelateraloneattachedinsidetherimoftheorbit
andisnotvisible.PaintamaskontheeyeballandthenuseSubtool>Extracttomakeyourtarsalplates.Useyourfavouritegeometrycreationmethodtoplacethe
ligaments,thenDynaMeshtheresulttogether.

Step7Constructorbitalfat

Withtheeyeandlidsinplaceyoucanseethelargecavityweneedtofillwithorbitalfat.Orbitalfatispackedallthewayintotheorbitandiswhatcushionsandholds
oureyeballinplace.Withagewecanseethisfatpushingoutoftheorbit,givinguscharacteristicbagsunderoureyes.Constructhalfadonutoffatandlocateitinthe
spacebetweenthetarsalplatesandtherimoftheorbit.

Step8Putintheoribicularisoris

Ourlip/mouthmuscleisthefirstoftwoorbicular(circular)musclesonourface,madeofconcentricringsofmusclefibres,whichpullinwardinvariouscombinationsto
makeavarietyoflipshapesandphonemes.Themuscleisextremelycomplexasmanysurroundingmuscleswill
passfibresintoit.Hereweshowthedeepcheekmuscle,thebuccinator,mergingintotheorbicularisorisfromthesides.Thebuccinatororiginatesaboveandbelowthe
molarsandpassesfibresintothedeepsectionoftheorbicularmuscle.

Step9Makedeepcheekfatpads

Thereareacoupleoffatpadsinthedeeprecessesoftheskullthatactascushionsforthefacialmuscles.Thesedeepcheekfatpadssitoverthebuccinatorandsquishout
intothedepressioninfrontofthezygomaticboneandabitabovethezygomaticarch.Thevolumeofthesefatpadsdeterminethesizeofthehollowinapersonscheek.
Themaninthisportraithasveryhollowcheekssokeepthevolumesmallasyouconstructthesefatpads.

Step10Cutoribicularisoculii

Thefacessecondorbicularmusclecoverstheorbitandeyelidsandisresponsibleforblinking,squintingandraisingthecheek.Itextendsquitefarovertheorbitalrim
andwrapsmediallytoattachtothemedialcanthalligament.Herewehavecutawaythemedialhalfofthemuscletokeeptheorbitalfatandtarsalplateexposed.Use
ZSpheresoranIMMCurvebrushtogetgeometrywrappingaroundtheorbit,thenflattenitandDynaMeshit.UsetheTrimRectangletooltocutoffthemedialhalf.

Step11Buildforeheadmuscles:temporalisandcorrugator

Thesetwomusclesareimportantcontributorstotheexpressionsofsurprise,angerandsadness.Theyarethinmusclessotheydontcreatesurfaceformbutwecertainly
recognisetheexpressionstheycreate.Forthetemporalis,createaflatsheetofgeometryfromjustabovetheorbittothetopoftheforehead.Mediallyitstretchesalmost
tothecentre,laterallytothetemporalline.Thecorrugatorisasmalldiagonalmusclethatspansthespacebetweenthebaseofthenosetoapointapproximatelymid
eyebrow.Placethisusingasmallpieceofgeometry.

Step12Liftthelip

Thehumanfacehasanetworkofmusclesthatarticulatetheupperlip.Themusclesanchorintotheupperedgeoftheorbicularisorismuscle(aswellasintermingling
fibresintothelip).Theyarecalled(fromlefttoright):levatorlabiisuperiorisalaquenasi,levatorlabiisuperiorisandzygomaticminor.Theyarerespectivelyresponsible
forwrinklingournose,sneeringandsubtlydeepeningthenasolabialfurrow(thefurrowthatcomesoffthenoseandproceedsdownbythecornerofthemouth).Construct
theselikelittlepiecesoflinguini.Note:thereisalsoasneakycornerliftingmusclenotshownhere.

Step13Constructthezygomaticmajor

Themuscle,zygomaticmajor,isoursmilemuscle.Itcanbedifficultdrawingorsculptingasmilebutonceyouunderstandtheorigin/insertionandactionofthismuscle,
theconstructionofthesmilebecomeseasy.Buildthismusclefromthecornerofthemouthouttothelateralsurfaceofthezygomaticarch.Ithasthewidestpullofanyof

Step14Pulldowncorners

Justaswehadzygomaticmajorpullingthecornerofthemouthupwardstocreateasmile,wehaveacornerdepressorcalleddepressoranguliioris,thatpullsthecorner
downtocreateafrown.Thismusclepullsonthecornerofthemouthbutalsopassesfibresintotheupperpartoforbicularisoris.Someofthisformcanbevisibleon
peoplesfaces.Asecondsmall,butrelated,risoriusmusclepullsthemouthwideandslightlydownward.Unusually,itoriginatesfromtheskinoverthemasseter.

Step15Depressthelipandliftthechin

Theoppositeoftheupperliplifters(Step12)isthelowerlipdepressor,depressorlabiiinferioris.Itanchorsontothejawjustinsidethedepressoranguli(Step14)and
thenascends,grabbingontomostofthebodyofthelowerlip.Thisflatsheetofmuscleretractsyourlowerlipshowingyourbottomteeth.Adjacenttothismuscleisthe
lastmuscleofthetutorial:thementalis.Thisfunnylittlemuscleanchorsbetweenthelowerteethandchin,andgrabsontothefatpadthatcoversthechin,raisingitwhen
activated.Itisshowncutawayhere.

Step16Constructthemalarandmidcheekfat

Nowthatthemusclesofexpressionareinplaceweneedtocoverthemwithsubcutaneousfat.Wehaveacriticalfatpad,calledthemalarfatpad,thatislocatedbelowthe

bottomoftheorbitandlateraltothebaseofthenose.Ithelpscreatethenasolabialfurrow.Asweageitsagsandseparatesfromtheothersubcutaneousfatdeposits.Here
wealsoconstructthetriangularmidcheekfatpad,alsoquitedefinedonourmodel.

Step17Buildthesubmentalfatandjowls

Thelastfewcharacteristicfatdepositsarelocatedonthelowerfaceandunderthechin.Thesubmentalfatcompartment,ourdoublechinfat,isconstructedunderneath
thechin.Becarefulnottoextenditouttoofartothesides,nortoolow.Adjacenttothisareapairofjowlfatcompartments,oneaboveandonebelowthejawline.
Constructtheselikesmallparcelsoffatthatgravityhashaditswaywithovertime.
