A LANE GOING UP THE HILL

It was a heavy rainstorm in Kampung Sepang, Jabri and Hill had just finished their
dinner together at Jabri’s house. They were sitting in the living room for coffee and
conversation, hoping the rain would stop soon.
It was half past eleven at night and the downpour was showing no signs of stopping.
“Looks like you’ll have to spend the night here, Halil. “Said Jabri. “No way,” Halil said,
“I’ve to be at work early tomorrow morning.”
A few moment later Hilal got into the car, started the engine, and said good night to
Jabri.
Something told him that he shouldn’t have turned off the lane going up the hill, but it
was the shortest way home. He knew that lane. It ran across from an Old Chinese
cemetery. There were no lights, no cars, no people, just Hilal and his car.
All of sudden a white shape appeared in the middle of the lane. Halil shone hi beam of
light in that direction. The white shape turned to Halil. He saw a pair of crimson eyes
staring at him. It was long-haired woman in a long white dress. She grinned at Halil. At
once, Halil felt his blood freeze. His heartbeat stopped. His mouth opened but the was
speechless. His eyes opened wide in terror.
Suddenly, consciousness came into his mind. He quickly reversed his car and sped
away just in time.
“I think I’II take up your offer to spend the night here after all, “Halil told Jabri s his legs
trembled.

You may have known the difference between money market and stock exchange.
Money market is the body of bankers, financiers, etc whose operations decide the rates
of interest on borrowed capital. Stock exchange is a place where stocks and shares are
bought and sold. Every big city in the world has a stock exchange such as New York,
London, Jakarta, even Surabaya. These cities are financial centers.
Many of the world’s business activities today is impossible without stocks and
bonds. Stocks and bonds are certificates that corporations sell to the public to raise
money. Starting a new company or buying new equipment for an existing company
usually requires a very large amount of money. The amount may be too large to borrow
from a bank or from several persons. The company’s finance should be strong enough to
develop productivity. To raise money, the company sells thousands, sometimes millions
of shares and stocks or thousands of rupiah worth bonds. Stocks an bonds are also
called securities. Those who buy securities are called investors. They invest money to the
company. Careful investment of their capital will result in good income
