LO2
Plans will show a full consideration of movement and continuity, perspective, point of view,
transitions and special effects.
Learners will follow industry conventions and terminology used in storyboard production
correctly.
Plans for the construction of models, sets and props will be realistic and clear.
Drawings, script and storyboard will all show a creative interpretation of the idea.
LO3:
The documentation linked to the production will be full and detailed and there will be
evidence that the production management and scheduling of the project has been effective
and carried out in a professional manner. The techniques used in the production of the work
are likely to be related to an understanding of current trends in the industry.
In all practical activity learners will be capable of working autonomously and effectively. They
will work on their own initiative, will not need constant support or supervision, will give the
work their full commitment, work positively and cooperatively with others, and meet
deadlines. In other words, they will have the kind of self-management skills that would be
expected of them in a professional context. Note also that this criterion should not be taken
to mean that learners do not seek advice or that they work without discussing things with
their tutor, but rather that they are not dependent upon the support of others and that when
they take advice they weigh it carefully for themselves.

Planning
Brainstorm / mind map (add extra pages if necessary)
Music Video All the motion will be very basic and relative to the
simple lexus and linguistics of the song (The Weeknd High for This)
The main shot it will keep flashing back to will be her driving her car
which she will crash at the end. But there will be many juxtaposing
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
The tempo of the song will start of very slow which will be shown
through the pace of editing of shots. Then as the song builds the
tempo will increase; alongside the drugs are having a bigger effect on
the actor. All of the footage will be seen as images of printed off stop
motion pictures. Not all of the video will be in stop motion, there will
be video footage as well. 2 Minutes of video footage and 1 minute of
stop motion. That is proportionate and the different sections will be
integrated. The song is 4 minutes and 14 seconds, I will the first 3
minutes of the song, the end will be the car crash.
The stop motion photographs will resemble her flashbacks they are
used as a creative platform to show her inner thoughts.
The style and genre of my brief was left open for the animator so I have chosen to
create a surreal tense mood. The genre is quite dark and drug related. There will be
a lot of low brightness lighting set ups used to create mood.
My brief was negotiated with and I switched the 30 second maximum video to a full
music video length of 3 minutes but there will only be 1 minute of stop motion
within that.
Risk assessment: Are there any health and safety issues you may encounter?
The props used for an illegal drug ecstasy pill, will not be real. The actor will not
be under the influence at any point.
Also I am faking a car crash but the music video will be shot in a way where the
camera does not actually see what happens. I will do this through certain camera
angles and blacking out the screen then showing the sounds of a different crash.
A risk could be if anything gos wrong whilst filming in the car because any
damages could be a big cost. Same with the equipment used like the camera if
dropped can be an expensive mistake.
Discuss any legal issues you may face. Eg; sound, plagiarism, age restrictions
I am using The Weeknd song High for This I will reference the cover so I am not
claiming the song is mine, I am only making a music video for the audio. In my
notes I will explain I am using fake drugs and that no illegal issues will be involved.

combined formats
When I researched all the different forms of animation photography looked most intriguing to
me. Its a concept Ive never seen before and it seemed like a challenge. I feel like using
photographs would be a clever way to symbolize memories and flashbacks.
What are the different possibilities you could explore using this format?
My first idea was to have the images for the stop motion printed out on a printer then take
pictures of the of the images as they come out. But now I believe that would not match the
tense mood of the song, so I will try and get the photograph to move a long on a dark
background maybe this will help show this is her inner thoughts or flashbacks. Also by
having the images move leaving the pervious sin the trail is an effective and lever technique
to display stop motion.
Through simply mise-en-scene alone I am trying to tell the audience that the stop motion
segment is her dark thoughts and memories so maybe by panning into her head and the
start and end of each time I parallel edit back to reality.
What are the limitations of using this format? (i.e what problems/ obstacles might you
have?)
Now I have to make a 3 music video, 2 minutes of video and a whole minute of stop motion,
means that I have a real high work rate to maintain this unit to work to my deadline of
January the 13th.
Not only have I made my video a lot longer but the format of time lapse photography is a lot
more time enduring method meaning I have to take however many frames per second for
the stop motion then after that print them all off then take pictures of the pictures and edit
with them, alongside my recorded video. So keeping up with time will be a problem for me
this unit.
What imaginative or inventive animations have you seen which use this format?
Add in links and screen shots of three examples of animations using this format.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
This is a creative stationary method of presenting stop motion, the use of this wide shot on
the printer lets ypu clearly show the change on the pages. Its cool for a simple idea but
wouldnt match the feel of mood for my tense narrative of music video.
The pen story was very good at filling there shot with multiple photographs to show you
around the center mage, of the two images I showed, you can see how theyve shown the
trail clearly and how effective it looks.
The movement of physical photos was integrated with the content inside the image, which
was very inventive, they used a sink filled with water, and has used a transparent cup to
move the swimming wolf actor through the sink (pool)
Subject
What will the subject of your animation be?
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
The subject of my animation is drug user teenager, Ruby Blair. Aged 19 she is stuck in a
trapped cycle of drug addiction, where her addiction is haunting her and trapping the
innocent side of her. Flashbacks attack her and pursued her to take drugs.
Storyline
Describe the storyline of your animation. What events will happen to your characters?
Ruby is holding a photograph of the trapped Ruby inside her head. Then the video will
continue. Ruby driving her car will work as the primary video for the parallel editing for the
music video. The photographs will be used as a format as a way to show her flashbacks,
and her trapped emotions. The music video will cut back to the images of photographs then
to video multiple times, it will be quite confusing. But hopefully will make sense to the viewer.
Eventually as the song hits climax the drugs become to much as her emotions and mental
state becomes too much and she loses control mentally, she also loses control over the car,
therefore crashing the car.
Characters
What characters will be in your animation?
She is a 19-year-old girl whos mixed in with the wrong crowd during college, which got her
doing recreational drugs, which has developed into an addiction which cant stop. She has a
voice inside her head which tells her to take the drugs. Shes battling a war inside her head,
almost like shes bipolar.
From a young age shes rebelled with her rich, strict parents. Resulting in her bad path to
drug addiction.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
Hobbies: Ruby has an addiction with recreational drug use. This came from
mixing in with the wrong crown
socializing in secondary school. A lot
of her time is spent with her mates
where she is socializing going out to
parties and chilling out with friends.
She is also very into her makeup and
fashion, which she spends a lot of
her money on getting the designer
clothes and expensive make up.
Character She was clever from a young age, but was never really interested in
Background: education or having a career despite her potential. Her bad
relationship with her parents makes her to rebel and is the outcast
of the family.
She spends a lot of time with her friends, Ruby is easily peer
pressured. She surrounds herself with very intimidating characters
which characteristics fall off on her.
Her hard drug addiction has got worse, which started off as a party
occasion has developed into a daily issue. She feels like she relies
on the drug, and that she is not herself unless she is high (links to
song title high for this). She hears voices in her head which tells
her to-do these drugs.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
Add in images and drawings/ sketches of what they will look like.
My music video will be constructed of video footage and stop motion, so my actor is human,
not recreated in any way, but during the stop motion part she will appear through visible
printed out photos.
I do not need to create any models or sets, but for my minute of stop motion I will need to
arrange a path for the photographs to move around fitting the mood. I will need to take
photographs of the photographs as they move by laying the them on top of each other, but
slightly to the side to make a path. The stop motion will be used to represent Rubys thoughts
and trapped feelings.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
Movement of characters
For my photography stop motion, my video is going to pan in very close then reappear in the
photographs on a black background which will be multiple black a 3 pieces of paper layered
out in my media room. The black background behind the images will match the mood and
hopefully connote her dark trapped thoughts and memories. These image will be played
frame per frame on top of each other, then the photos will move along next to each other
making a path and show movement. Multiple images can also be inside a frame to show
location and scenery inside the image, as if a 3d look. Then the stop motion will cut back to
video and back and forth using parallel editing.
An armature provides the internal foundation on which to build your sculpture. Much like
our own human skeletal system is the framework which keeps us standing in an upright
position, an armature is used to keep the artist's clay from collapsing, while also protecting
the integrity of any outward extensions, such as thin limbs or legs. Truly, the most
disheartening experience a clay sculptor can have is to create the ideal form, only to have
his project fail due to the lack of a sturdy frame.
Although it can be made from a variety of materials, such as wood or steel, the (almaloy)
aluminum wire armature is the superior choice due to the following features:
non-corrosive
lightweight
fully pliable
non-staining
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
No I will not need to use armature at any point in my productions. This is because I am doing
a 3-minute music video, 2 minutes on video footage using a real actor, and the same for the
stop motion will be acted by the same person.

Sets / backgrounds
Will your set be;
A blue/green screen
An existing location
Draw sketches of how your sets/backgrounds will look. Add in labels to your diagrams and
details of locations / lighting etc.
There will be multiple locations throughout the 3 minute music video. But the main 2
locations will be inside Rubys Vauxhall Corsa and the other will be in a enclosed room and
space to resemble somewhere where her trapped thoughts could be.
So for my settings I will be searching for ideal existing locations, opposed to making them
unless I have too.

Complete the sound list, detailing what sounds you will use, where you will source them,
what equipment you will need to record them and when you will use them in your animation.
You will need to design your own soundtrack. You cannot use copyrighted music, and it
must be more than simply adding a track.
Think of the scenes in your animation. Each scene should have different sounds/music to
give information about the mood / emotions of the characters.

Audience
Define the following characteristics of your audience;
Gender
Age
My demographics age is aimed for 18-30. My music video is strictly 18+ anyway due to the
drug use which is associated with the age group. The reason Im aiming for a young
audience is mainly due to the content of video, The Weeknds audience started off when he
had a lower fan base as typically teenagers and young 20s due to his content of music
which contains lots of lyrics about sex and drug use. With The Weeknds new international
demographic due to his mass success, with his big singles such as The Hills, Earned It-
which was used as the sound track from 50 Shades of Grey and many more, this means
that his huge audience is now obviously more spread. But it was his content and talent that
was the reason for his young audience. The Weeknd has become massive now despite his
controversial content, he is receiving multiple awards and topping charts for singles, albums
and for an artist.
https://www.google.co.uk/#q=the+weeknd+achievments
Interests
The interests is very specifically DRUGS! Which is a group associated with teenagers which
are the highest users of drugs.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
I think my concept of photography animation is quite new to this audience, as its not a
widely watched or used for of animation. The animation theyve more likely watched is
Aardmans animations, like Wallace and Gromit or Shaun the sheep, as of theyre a young
audience, they would have watched the more youthful aimed Claymation animation.
I think they will enjoy watching drug related narratives as that potentially could be something
that interests them, theres a lot of highly successful artists that use drugs as partly their
content. Such as The Weeknd, which is the song Im using.
Drugs is quite a niche idea, as some audiences will consider drugs as distasteful due to the
illegal side of it. Also there can be very harmful side effects to taking drugs which could put
of viewers. But I am specifically aiming my audience at a young audience so hopefully they
will not be so judgmental, opposed to how an older more mature audience might be.
How will you ensure that your animation will suit your chosen audience?
My stop motion photography is an under used method, which will make it fun to watch and
not boring. Also the content should be very relevant and intriguing to watch to my youthful
viewer. There is driving make up and rugs involved in my music video.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
How will they physically watch your animation? (i.e in an exhibition format, on screen,
projection, online?)
My format is very easy to watch, most music videos use Youtube as a massive platform to
showcase your content, this is what Ill do. I will also upload the music video to my Weebly
blog so they can access it there.

Lighting Design
In my college main media room, with artificial lighting, the room is well lit, but I could
use additional directional lighting if needs be.
There are many windows in the roonm, but they will not provide the light im using, the
lighting will come from the interior lights.
Yes to make sure the lighting is consistent I will pull down the blind when shooting.
Yes the room lights are very well lit, there is 12 wide lights to fill the room with even light.
Where will you place your light source(s) to create interesting effects?

Ensure your clips are labeled as such. Screen shot the folder your clips are in, and copy the
image underneath.
In the downsized images folder is the photos that have already gone through Photoshop to
downsize the quality, to make processing quicker.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
I have imported the images into Premier at 8fps. I also have separate stop motion files,
which were at faster and slower fpss.
Stop Motion Animation Pre-production Booklet
Dope sheets
A dope sheet is an animation tool which helps a animator organise the animation shot-by-
shot.
This gives the camera operator instructions on each shot type and how many frames this will
be used for.
For example;
Because you will be working with video, you will be using 30fps. You will need to complete a
dope sheet for EVERY SECOND of your animation.
i.e, if you make a 30 second animation, you will need to complete 30 dope sheets.
This will be a time-consuming task, but it will help you understand what will need to
happen in each of the shots you take. The higher marks will come from a detailed and
careful collection of dope sheets. For example, if your characters speaks, you will need to
show the mouth forming every shape in order to look effective.
Copy and paste as many dope sheets as you need. Remember to change the frame
numbering so that the first number refers to the second of animation ie, 1_24 is the 24th
frame of the first second, 3_17 is the 17th frame of the 3rd second.

Liaising with client (write notes on discussions between you and your client)
In my brief with my client, they originally asked for a minimum of 30 seconds of stop
motion, as agreed I wanted to exceed this by doing 1 minute or more of stop motion,
which I have successfully completed.
I agreed with my client that I wanted to merge stop motion animation with video for my
music video. The video and stop motion is be made up to match the 3:41 length of song.
