Tensile test is known as a basic and universal engineering test to achieve

material parameters. Standard tensile testing are very important and useful for the
selection materials for any applications required. Tensile testing is used to guarantee
the quality of components, materials and finished products within a wide range
industries. Typical applications of tensile testing are highlighted in the following
sections such as Aerospace Industry, Automotive Industry, Beverage Industry,
Construction Industry, Electrical and Electronics Industry etc .

Tensile test also very important in order to avoid in construction and a major
test for safety purposes. This test will measure the ability of a material to withstand
tensile loads. The result for tensile test also use to select a material for an
application, for quality control and to predict how a material will react under other
types of forces. The tensile test specimens is a standarized sample cross-section. It
has two shoulders and a section in between. The shoulders are large so they can be
easily gripped, where the gauge section has a smaller cross-section so that the
deformation and failure can occur at this area. The experiment will determine the
ability of the milesteal specimens to stand load given by using special apparatus to
get the most accurate data.

Apparatus such as tensile test machine, rectangular specimens, extension

gauge and vernier calipper was used to smoothen the experiment. At the end of this
experiment, students will be able to get complete data and other scientific calculation
such as the value stress and strain for the milesteal specimens.[ CITATION Bee10 \l

For safe design of structural components in bridges, railway lines, marines

ships, aircrafts, pressure vessels etc, the tensile properties of materials used should
be analysed . "Hence the tensile strength of the materials should meet the strength
requirements of the structural applications. The mechanical properties of the metals
determine the kind of engineering application to be used for. Experiments on tensile
tests can be used to predict the tensile properties and they are conducted by
application of axial or longitudinal forces to a specimen with known dimensions.
(Davis , 2004) .These forces are applied on the specimen until deformation causes
failure. The tensile load and corresponding extensions are then recorded for
calculations and determination of stress- strain relationship of the material specimen.
The tensile test experiment can be used to determine other mechanical
characteristics of the specimen like yield strength, percentage elongation, and
ultimate strength among others. The original gauge length,L diameter,D or cross
sectional area,A also used in calculations hence should be recorded

6.0 EXPERIMENT PROCEDURES

1. The length of specimens were measured using Vernier callipers.

2. The thickness and width of specimens were measured.

3. The specimens were mounted to the jaw grip of tensile test machine.

4. The load anchor was turned anticlockwise direction.

5. Step 4 was repeated for rate.
6. The rate was changed.
7. The final length was measured.
