For the next 20 minutes students will look through a selection of Art Nouveau
art examples in order to observe a selection of colours that are most often
seen across Art Nouveau artworks.
Students will use this activity to create an Art Nouveau colour palette
using coloured pencils and watercolour pencils.
Students will select a medium best suited to their skill set.
This activity is to be conducted with the aim of developing students use of
visual art language in the identification of colour across a variety of Art
Nouveau art works. Students will develop their understanding of colour theory
as they identify the descriptions of specific colours and identify how they have

Artist, working mostly in glass, active in the latter decades of the 19th century, born in 1846
and died 1904
What are the social contexts surrounding Galles work? His birthplace is a centre for
glasswork since the 15th century. He formed the Nancy School of Art Nouveau which
focused on the production of floral motifs and revolutionary glass techniques.

Other Facts
Art Nouveau was influenced by the dream worlds of the Symbolist poets and evocative and
decorative forms.
Galles work uses shape, colour and texture to create a symbolist dcor.
Art Nouveau aimed towards the reminiscent in its strive towards Celtic and rococo design,
Galle being one of the few artists to come close to achieving the gracefulness of the
Rococo.
Though Art Nouveau created significant links between art and nature, Galle also wrote
numerous scientific articles on horticulture.
Nancy, France, Galles birthplace, had a glass industry dating back to the 15th century.
Galle studied the techniques of Chinese and Japanese glass snuff bottles.
Galle was mainly active as an artist in the later decades of the 19th century.
