1. Overview

1.1 Problem/Opportunity Statement

The competitive video game industry, or as it is more commonly known esports industry, is
gaining huge momentum making $463 million in 2016 and is expected to grow to $693 million
in 2017 (Warman, Takahashi). The company SmashGen is a new comer to the esports market
and have gained significant popularity through their involvement with the Nintendo made
fighting games known as Super Smash Brothers Melee and Super Smash Brothers Wii U. These
games currently have huge fan followings who turn out in the thousands to compete and also to
spectate large competitive tournaments. Those who cannot attend, generally watch live streams
of these tournaments through online services such as Twitch.tv, which is currently the standard
esports streaming platform.

SmashGen has identified an opportunity to expand its share of the esports market and more
specifically the competitive Smash Bros market. The opportunity lies in the lack of an all-
inclusive Smash Bros website that would be able to host services such as tournament brackets,
schedules, and rankings, but would also incorporate much larger scale services related to the
game. These more robust services include fantasy drafts of pro players for upcoming events and
most importantly the ability to host several large tournament streams simultaneously through
their own website for the fans to log on and spectate. The increasing popularity of the Super
Smash Brothers franchise and esports streaming in general, is a great indicator that SmashGen
may be able to fill this niche in the market. A new website for for SmashGen is required for fans
to be be able to access this information. The company requires a basic network to set up in their
new office for this website to be created/maintained.

1.2 Context
SmashGen is an up and coming company in the thriving esports industry. SmashGens
involvement in Super Smash Brothers events up to this point has been limited to hosting online
tournament brackets, tournament schedules, and pro player rankings. In order to accommodate
these new services SmashGen will require a larger office space to house the new network which
will include new employee workstations and hardware to facilitate the new equipment tasked for
stream hosting. The new network will need to accommodate upwards of one hundred thousand
users logging on to the SmashGen servers to watch tournament streams and still have access to
the online store, bracketing system, rankings, scheduling, and player fantasy drafts.

2. Logical Design

2.1 Floor Plan Diagram

The preceding diagram shows the logical layout of the new office for SmashGen. This includes
room enough for 9 employees and their workstations. The location is large enough to
accommodate more employees in the future in the main employee workspace. A server closet to
store the web server and still have enough room for expansion servers in the future. All the
common necessities of an office are available such as restrooms, break room, and conference
room. The open floor plan in the main workspace will help the team communicate constantly on
a more efficient basis now that the website is expanding its services.

2.2 Website Diagram

This is a website layout diagram that shows the logical structure of the SmashGen website. The
diagram illustrates the layout of the website including the live streaming, fantasy player drafts,
tournament listings, personal account access, and a contact us links. The basic structure at least
initially is very simple but based on early success and traffic to the site, it may need to be
streamlined.

3.3 Sequential Diagram

The diagram above describes the process of a user logging onto the SmashGen website. The end
goal is to log in and access personal account details so that the user can interact with the fantasy
player draft web application. A user opens Google Chrome and enters the SmashGen url to gain
access to website. Once they have access to the site, the user navigates to the fantasy player draft
section and is asked to log in. The user then enters log in credentials and is given access to their
personal account if the credentials are authenticated.

3.2 Business Use Cases (user stories)

Interview 1: Jordan Peele

Ive been involved in some capacity with the esports scene basically since its inception in the
early 2000s and I have the seen it grow a lot since then. Since working with SmashGen I have
seen the Super Smash Brothers franchise take a larger and larger portion of the market to the
point where I think we could be doing better. I currently work with the online pro player
rankings and it takes a lot of time to keep track of all the players and how they are ranking in
relation to tournaments we are hosting brackets for. This is not to say that the experience
couldnt be improve for our users.

I think that we could be offering fantasy drafting for pro Smash Bros players before major
events. This would add a whole new dimension to the viewing experience because not only
would the fans be able to follow the event but also root for the players that they drafted to place
at certain rankings at the event.

Interview 2: Jeff Ross

For the longest time we have been gaining popularity as a company and I think that SmashGen
could really step it up in terms of expanding to take a real chunk of the competitive Super Smash
Brothers market. I work with the tournament scheduling, which includes keeping up with when
basically all tournaments are taking place across the world and I also coordinate with the
tournament organizers of each event to determine the daily schedule for each phase of the event
as accurately as possible. It always feels to me like we are missing out when we compile the
scheduling and then just hand off the streaming aspect to websites such as Twitch.tv.

SmashGen could be an inclusive website for the average Super Smash Brothers fan by having
resources available such as tournament listings, rankings, player fantasy drafts, and live streams
of events hosted through their website. I think in order to do that we will need a new workspace
and network to be set up and configured. If this is done correctly I believe that our business
could expand and grow exponentially. SmashGen would have a huge hold on the entirety of the
competitive Super Smash Brothers market, providing stream and support for both games
currently being played in tournament. Users would have to look no further in terms of their
tournament viewing experience, SmashGen would have the rankings, schedules, and the actual
stream for each event.

3.1 Requirements and Specification

Key Benefits:

The implementation of the SmashGen website will enable to users to be connected with the latest
in Super Smash Brothers content. There are currently no websites offering all the services
SmashGen intends to offer including tournament listings/scheduling, pro player fantasy drafting,
and live streams of tournaments. Once the SmashGen website is updated, fans will be able to log
on and access all of this data and they will know where to access this content in the future. Such
a project, if carried out correctly, will help grow the SmashGen brand and allow them to expand
and hire more employees for the new office.

Key Constraints:

This project require that SmashGen have a new office and a new network needs to be set up to
allow the team to maintain and update their website content more easily. The company will be
moving into a new office space of approximately 1000 sq ft.

The network equipment required for the new office network includes:

Commercial grade Cisco Wireless (N) Router x 1

Commercial grade Cisco Wireless access point x 2
16 port Small Business Cisco Network Switch x 1
HP Business class client workstations x 10
Acer LCD monitor x 10
Mice/Keyboard Peripherals x 10
Dell Poweredge Small Business Blade Server x 1
2 TB HDDs for Server x 4
HP OfficeJet Pro All-in-one Printer x 3
Uninterruptible Power Supply x 4
Cat5e Ethernet Cabling x TBD
CDN subscription, including website hosting service

The main constraint of the project is that a network needs to be designed for the new office
space. An itemized list with cost of network implementation will need to be created and
presented to investors of SmashGen.
A wireless survey also needs to be conducted so that the wireless signal can cover the whole
office for all employees with BYOD.
