Why cant we have Peace?

Can people live in harmony? Truly this is an idea called world peace and many

people think it is possible. The problem with world peace is that as long as there are

multiple people on Earth, world peace is impossible because of things like racial

discrimination, religion, and revenge. Everyone has their own ideas, everyone has their

own beliefs, everyone has their own opinions, everyone can disagree.

There's also tons of evidence that countries, like America, have treated people

differently. My first example comes from the story A Quilt of a Country by Anna

Quindlen where she stated, Slavery and sweatshops, the burning of crosses and the

ostracism of the other. (Quindlen 3-4). When Quindlen said this she wanted to show

how even a country where, All men are treated equal can be racist and exclude other

people. The reason she wanted to say that is so we may think of America a way other

than the country where, All men are created equal. Another example of racial

discrimination in America is in the story Making the Future Better, Together by Eboo

Patel where it said, The man who welcomed Jews and Catholics into the nation, the

man who spoke of a government that gave bigotry no sanction and persecution no

assistance, he was a slave owner. (Patel 5). What Patel was trying to say when he

wrote this was that people cant be judged by what they do or who they are. This is

important because the world judges people without really knowing them.

Along with racial discrimination, religion is another reason people cant live in

harmony. As Paul Tillich, a Lutheran theologian and a Christian existentialist

philosopher, once said, The separation of faith and love is always a consequence of a
deterioration of religion. This may be complicated to understand but what Tillich was

trying to say was that separation of faith and love is a result of religion becoming

progressively worse. This shows that Paul Tillich believes that religion is a reason why

people cant live in harmony. Also as Ben Harper once said, Theres no room in my life

for religion. Religion is separation. It is a very simple statement but he is saying that

religion separates us. This is true because there are currently groups of very religious

people going to war with other religious groups.

My last point in this essay is that revenge will never result in peace but

forgiveness will. As Bill Clinton said after the Oklahoma bombing, We pledge to do all

we can to help you heal the injured, to rebuild this city, and to bring to justice those who

did this evil. (Clinton 19). My point is made at the last part of his quote where he said,

and to bring to justice those who did this evil. Clinton promises that he will get revenge

on the person who did the bombing. The problem is that revenge usually ends in more

tragedy. Some people like Bernard Baruch may say, Let us not deceive ourselves; we

must elect world peace or world destruction. While I see what he is saying his quote is

incorrect because, as I have already said, world peace is impossible. Not only that but

world destruction is inevitable, humans will eventually destroy other humans. All in all,

people will never live in harmony.

In conclusion, it is impossible for every one of the 7.125 billion people on Earth to

get along with each other. With peoples different ideas, different beliefs, and different

opinions, humans have a hard time agreeing. That is why humans will never live in

harmony.
