Love is Complex

Roll May once said To love means to open ourselves to the negative as well as to the

positive- to grief, sorrow and disappointments as well as to joy, fulfillment, and an intensity of

consciousness we did not know was possible before. This quote introduces the idea of how love

can be an overwhelming or a happy feeling. In, the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare

demonstrates that love has different aspects and it isnt practical. In the play we learned that

Romeo and Juliet loved each other but their families feud was in the way of their happiness.

Throughout the play they encountered many obstacles but yet their love for one another was

incredibly strong. At the end of the play they decided that the only way they could be together

was if they took each other's life. Similarly in the myth Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid the author

shows the readers how love is not simple. The myth elaborates unfortunate occasions and

difficulties that Pyramus and Thisbe encounter. It was unfortunate that Pyramus and Thisbes

parents forbid them to be wed. In addition they come across a misunderstanding. Pyramus

thought Thisbe was dead so he took his life and turns out, Thisbe was still alive. When Thisbe

saw Pyramus dead she killed herself because she could not face the fact of her not being with her

true love. Love can be an overwhelming or a happy feeling because of the different aspects such

as passion, pain and conflict.

Passion is one of the many aspects in love. In, both Romeo and Juliet and Pyramus and

Thisbe show that passion can be a positive or negative affection that is used to describe when

you are really into something or someone. Sometimes too much can lead to serious issues.

During the balcony scene Romeo declares his love to Juliet in a passionate way. To better

understand passion in the play Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare provides the example Juliet is the

sun! Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon ( III.ii.4-6). This example means that Romeo was

madly in love with Juliet and the readers can notice that by the way he describes her. It is

apparent that passion can be a positive thing but when someone is over passionate they tend to

do something out of control. In the play when Romeo first met Juliet he was passionate and had

strong emotions towards her so he decided to propose marriage to her without really knowing

one another. His propose to Juliet was an act out of control feelings. In relation, Pyramus and

Thisbe by Ovid showed passion in a negative way. When Pyramus stabs himself with the dagger,

Ovid explains The blood leap high; it spouted like broken lead pipe(Ovid 98-100). This

example explains that Pyramus hurt himself so bad that his blood was gushing out. This reveals

that Pyramus was suffering because he was desperate to see Thisbe but he thought she was dead

so he ended his life. By ending his life this proves that love can bring negative passion into a

relationship and can get out of control and chaos occurs. Passion is a powerful feeling that can

make you get out of control at times.

In the play and myth we can discover how pain is address in the relationships.

Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet addresses the idea of pain. Pain is shown when Juliet found
out that Romeo and Tybalt drew their swords at each other. In the play Juliet states What storm

is this that blows so contrary? Is Romeo slaughtered, and is Tybalt dead? My dear-loved cousin,

and my dearer lord? Then, dreadful trumpet, sound the general doom! For who is living, if those

two are gone?(Shakespeare III.ii.64-68). This line describes how Juliet was caused great grief

not knowing what had happened to Romeo and Tybalt. Knowing how Juliet felt the readers can

infer that in a relationship tragic occurs and can cause a relationship problems. In addition, the

myth Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid provides an example of pain when Thisbe saw Pyramus

underneath the mulberry tree. The author explain Pyramus death such as, And as he died, he

wrenched the dagger from his gushing wound(Ovid 96-98). This line describes how Pyramus

suffered from the dagger and how Thisbe was suffered seeing him dead. The quote displays pain

because Pyramus is suffering physically and Thisbe is suffering mentally seeing her true love

dead. Pain comes in all sorts of ways and it is important to understand how it can affect your

relationship.

Throughout the play Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare the lovers went through many

conflicts since the beginning of their relationship. In the play Juliet demonstrates conflict when

she finds out Romeo was from a different family, Juliet states my only love, sprung from my

only hate!(Shakespeare I.iv.). This quote demonstrates conflict because Romeo is from the

family Montague and Juliet is from the family Capulet. This quote is significant because if their

families hate each other they would never allow Romeo and Juliet be together. Likewise,

conflict was shown in the myth Pyramus and Thisbe by Ovid states -but with time love grows.

Theirs did- indeed they wanted to be wed, but marriage was forbidden by their parents:(Ovid

9-11). The line displays conflict because Pyramus and Thisbe are in love but their parents forbid
them marriage. The quote is important because both relationships suffered from being forbidden

marriage. In a relationship it would be hard to be with someone you love when you dont have

the support of your parents.

Readers can come to the conclusion that love has many aspects such as passion, pain and

conflict. Based on the evidence we can elaborate how passion is a beautiful feeling but can cause

you to go out of control. In addition we can infer that pain is everywhere in life and it can affect

your relationship. Lastly conflicts will always occur especially in a relationship but you have to

learn to get past it. Overall love is such a powerful emotion that it contains many aspects such as

passion, pain and conflict.
