4. What is the recommended installation procedure for the material? Are any special techniques or
tools, particular temperature, or other conditions required?
All ASI Wood Panels collections have a comprehensive specification sheet in which proper installation
methods are outlined - all millwork panels are to be installed in compliance with AWI (Architectural
Woodwork Institute) guidelines. ASI does have several recommendations when it comes to detailing the
hanging and framing systems for ASI Wood Panels. Detailing depends on the thickness of the substrate, the
type of substrate or wall surface the panel is applied to, and the weight of the panel itself. Z clips are ideal
for hanging panels of all dimensions and weights directly on to smooth wall surfaces of any type. One half of
the Z clip is attached to the wall, while the other is attached to the back of the panel. The panel is then
hung. Lightweight panels, such as Interwoven Eco-Panels or Interlock Eco-Panels, can be applied directly to
smooth, vertical wall surfaces using construction adhesive. ASI Wood Panels must be stored flat on the job
site, and must acclimate to site conditions before installation.

resistance, and antimicrobial protection? (McGowan 96)
ASI Wood Panels meet and exceeds passing requirements for fire ratings and are made of durable,

berglass back in a translucent or opaque construction. This innovative, eco-friendly, lightweight and
waterproof surfacing material comes in two sizes and can illuminate any new or refreshed space, interior or

9. What is the proper maintenance for ASI Wood Panels?

ASI Wood Panels should be kept clean with a barely damp rag and/or with the proper vacuum
attachment. Touch up and minor repair as needed.

Current Trends in Wall Finish Products
Wallcoverings are trending in interior application, both residentially and
commercially. With advancements in printing, easily removable options and the artistry
of talented designers the demand for wallpaper has reached a design upsurge.
Wallcoverings provide a chic and sophisticated look that people are chasing. Another
big reason why wallcoverings are trending, is that they are manufactured to be more
durable and easier to clean. Making wallcoverings even more popular are that some are
manufactured to be eco-friendly wallcoverings and are being made from sustainable
materials. One can not only get an aesthetically pleasing wall finish, they can be eco-
friendly as well. As the concerns for the environment grow, all eco-friendly interior
products will increase in demand.
Current Trends in Floor Finish Products

Due to the growing popularity of trend-setting home decor and

renovation shows many new flooring styles, designs and finishes are
trending. The wider and longer hardwood planks with a more informal
layout, using different width planks is popular. The wider planks have the
advantage of creating a more unified look, with fewer joint lines. Texture is
increasing in popularity. Hardwood floors with distinct hand-crafted finishes,
such as hand scrapped and wire-brushed are growing popular.
Herringbone and chevron parquet designs are also a current trend, again
brought about by design shows.
Current Trends in Architectural Surface Products

The biggest current trend for architectural surface products is texture and geometric
patterns. Surface design using high texture and strong geometric surfaces have been
gaining popularity. Reclaimed wood is trending as an architectural surface product. The
vast amount of design shows, being aired on television and design magazines are the
reasons for these current trends. The use of reclaimed wood is gaining popularity
through the design shows and magazines and the growing desire for sustainable and/or
recycled products.
Current Trends in Architectural Millwork

Custom architectural millwork is evolving as design trends adapt and new

technology and materials are integrated allowing for the creation of
innovative features. Trending for commercial spaces are creative cabinetry,
shelving, storage, reception desks, lounge areas, and feature walls.
Creative cabinetry offers custom design for storage, making use of every
square inch possible, while still keeping aesthetics and functionality in
mind, hidden compartments to hide-away items that might not want to be
seen when not in use, and technology charging stations. Also, trending is
Corian, due to its malleability to bend into curves, providing a more modern
aesthetic.

REFLECTION

Materials & Specifications has taught me the importance of finish plans, finish schedules
and finish legends. To ensure a project is completed correctly, these forms of documentation
relay important information, about my design plan, to clients and/or contractors in an
organized format. Any misinformation can lead to project scheduling issues, increasing
budget. They provide a clear design plan between designer, client and contractors and are
legal contracts.
I learned the importance of material maintenance and how to properly document a
maintenance plan for clients. Having a maintenance plan will provide clients with the
information needed to maintain materials and finishes. If followed, the maintenance plan will
aide the client in maintaining the products life expectancy and appearance.
I also learned about cost estimation. Being able to correctly estimate the cost of materials
not only lets the client know their financial cost but, it also ensures that I, as the designer,
am keeping within budget.
All of these learning gains will be crucial as I continue my studies in becoming an interior
designer as they are extremely important aspects of design and will ensure that I am
practicing professional standards.
