Graduate/Undergraduate Research Assistant

Qatar University
Academic Fields: Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering - Other
Graduate Research Assistant positions are available in two joint 1 3 year
projects led by Prof. Farid Touati (Qatar University, QU), Prof. Damiano Crescini
(University of Brescia, Italy). and Prof. Adel Ben Mnaouer (Canadian University of
Dubai).
Requirements:
The candidate should have a strong background in embedded systems (hardware and
software, socket programming, interfacing, C/C++, wireless technology, PCB board
design and development).
Tasks:
The main objective of the project (Early Warning System for Asset & Underground
Monitoring for Safe & Sustainable Environment= Structure Health Monitoring; SHM)
is: Design of a wireless platform that is environmentally powered, enhanced with
novel MAC network protocols and emerging IoT-enabling protocols, in order to allow
remote control and interrogation of sensing units.
Specific tasks are (candidates are only concerned with TASKS 2 and 3 only):
TASK1: Fabrication of SHM sensing columns (selected sensors), each column (i.e.
node) transmits own data (serial, CANOPEN bus) using to the next column (node) via
mesh networking till a gateway. The columns are fabricated/available with CANOPEN
serial data (Task assumed by Italy collaborator).
TASK 2- Radio & Wireless Platform and IoT TASK 4.1 Develop/program an out-surface
board (OSB) that receives/processes/transmits SHM CANOPEN data received from
downwhole/underground and hops data till a gateway (column+OSB=Node). At the
beginning Raspberry pi3 for example can be used. TASK 4.2 Gateway (GW) design
with data processing (Task4) TASK 4.3 Implement power-aware and context-aware MAC
protocols in OSB and/or Gateway within IoT context.
TASK 3 Data Processing, Event Management and Storage (at OSB and/or Gateway).
TASK 3.1 Data Processing TASK 3.2 Event Management System (EMS) TASK 3.3 Data
Storage
