It is with pleasure I write this letter of recommendation for Shanley Richards as she
pursues a teaching position in the fields of biology and special education. She served as
a long-term substitute for the 2016-2017 school year in the Special Education
Department at Penfield High School. While serving in this position, Ms. Richards taught
Regents Living Environment in the 12:1:1 setting.

Ms. Richards established herself as a caring and compassionate teacher. She

demonstrated her commitment to the students and to creating a positive learning
environment while managing the needs of many different student abilities and
accommodations. Ms. Richards interactions with the students were positive and she
worked hard to develop lessons which met the students level of understanding while at
the same time addressed the Regents level curriculum.

Ms. Richards exemplified a strong work ethic through her meticulously planned lessons.
It was not uncommon to find Ms. Richards in her classroom after hours working on
lessons plans or grading and preparing for the next day. In her lesson planning, Ms.
Richards utilized the 5E lesson model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Evaluate,
Elaborate/Extend) which resulted in thoughtful and engaging lessons.

Ms. Richards is a dedicated staff-member who possesses a range of abilities. I
