structure fire at a Greer
home last Thursday morn-
ing.
The blaze at 222 James
Rd. was reported at
around 9:45 a.m., and
crews from the Boiling
Springs Fire Department
and Pelham Batesville re-
sponded, along with Greer
Fire.
Deputy Chief Josh Holz-
heimer said the electrical
fire started in the attic.

grown and evolved over

and one child as a result of
the fire, providing finan-

getting closer to
Greer expansion

Countybank is finalizing
plans to expand into Greer
as the company approach-
es its 85th anniversary this
year.
The bank announced
the expansion earlier this
year, targeting down-
towns North Main Street
as a desired location.
Countybank saw an
opportunity where a com-
munity bank is needed in
Greer, said Kevin Dun-
can, Vice President-Greer be, he said. It will be

a market that was similar
to Greenville, but one with
more growth potential.
Several local Greer lead-
ers have joined the Coun-
tybank team in recent
months including: Dun-
can, Greer Mayor Rick Dan-
ner, and Melody Owens.

lier in 2017.

ts not that I consider myself that na-
ive, particularly in regards to national
security, but I must say I was rather
taken aback by an on-air conversation
between hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika
Brzezinski (thank God she didnt come
to a book signing) during an episode of
Morning Joe just over a week ago.
This is really weird, Joe was saying,
I decided to start running and I didnt
tell anyone about it. I didnt post it on
social media or email about it, I only
talked about it to a friend over the
phone, and the next day on my phone,
all these ads started coming up for run-
ning gear.
Others mentioned the same sort of
occurrence: chatting about needing new
tires for their car, or having a skin tag
removed, then shocked to see ads ap-
pearing nearly immediately. It left them
wondering if the microphone of their
cell phone was using voice recognition
software and then selling that informa-
tion to companies to use in targeting ad
campaigns.

A: Well, this is awkward. We
dont usually like to discuss
our mistakes, but I guess we
can admit that we are not
perfect.
Trust us when we say, no-
body hates typos and errors
more than we do. We spend
a lot of time writing, editing
and reading to avoid these
slip-ups, but unfortunately,
We will do everything
we can to make sure
they dont happen, but
were only human and
we are flawed.
they happen. And they hap-
pen far too often. To give you
some perspective, each page of
newspaper copy contains about
2,000-3,000 words. We read
and write all of these words,
but sometimes the brain miss-
es things. If theres anything
weve learned about running
a weekly newspaper, its that
mistakes are going to happen.
And then, they are going to
happen again. We will do every-
thing we can to make sure they
dont happen, but were only
human and we are flawed. Al-
though we know typing errors
and misspellings are just part
of the gig sometimes, we also
understand that factual errors
are not. We spend a lot time
researching information to
make sure we have all the facts
for a story, and if we dont, we
dont print it. Its as simple as
that. Thats just how an honest
media platform operates.
But the typos, unfortunately,
are a part of life. A very frus-
trating and often cringeworthy
part of life, but an unavoidable
one.
Rest assured, however, know-
ing we will continue to strive
for perfect newspapers.

Id give this a shot to see if the NSA was
listening in to a middle aged woman in
her farmhouse in the upstate of South
Carolina. My plan included placing my
iPhone on the kitchen island as I stood
in close proximity, and even circled it,
repeating a particular word as well as
using it in a conversational phrase, over
and over, then jumping on-line to see if
any ads for my selected word popped
up. Not wanting to be disturbed by the
comings and goings of the dog and
countless cats now inhabiting the house,
I left the front door ajar so they could go
as they pleased. I was ready. I cleared my
throat and began, at first conversational-
ly, then stridently, then jokingly.

Searching for real news in
sea of national opinions
This wont come as breaking news to anyone,
but the Presidency (and campaign) of Donald
Trump has pushed an already slanted national
media over the edge.
Its no secret that most national media out-
lets lean a certain direction, but as a country,
we are reaching a point where real reporting
has been substituted for editorial commentary
from what used to be labeled as credible news
anchors.
Theres no better example here than CNN,
which frequently uses its main anchors as an-
alysts on other segments of its programming.
If Jake Tapper is your news anchor during the 6
p.m. hour, you cannot also have Jake Tapper de-
liver his thoughts on the news of the day during
the next hour. This is not only bad journalism,
it completely distorts how the viewer is able
to sort new information and divide truth from
opinion.
Its not that you cant have an opinion as a
journalist. There is certainly room for editori-
al commentary in the appropriate setting. But
thats just the point. This commentary is no
longer in an appropriate setting. The lines be-
tween the news section and opinion section are
no longer bold, but rather non-existent (if they
ever existed at all).
Its not just CNN. Fox News, MSNBC and oth-
er national networks and publications are just
as guilty. As consumers of news, we must un-
derstand that these sources of information are
competing for ratings. Somewhere along the
way, network executives decided that reporting
the news wasnt enough. Thats why you see a
panel on hand to discuss every story. Thats
why you only see the major networks only dis-
cuss one story at a time. They arent interest-
ed in news. They are interested in the argument
and browbeating that follows.
President Trump has poured fuel on this fire
at every turn over the last two years. While
national media outlets have become more en-
trenched in their biases, Trump has refused to
accept the majority of coverage, infamously la-
beling most of it fake news.

The Warriors won more
than 70 regular season
games last year, but blew
a 3-1 lead in the Finals.
So, in 2017, Steph and
Klay basically asked their
parents to finish their
homework, celebrating
the good grade that fol-
lowed. Kevin Durant is the

old adage, Give a man a
fish, hell eat for a day

to what LeBron pulled off

Everson helps raise $70,000 for nonprofit
A local artist used his
talents to raise more
than $70,000 for Arnold
Schwarzeneggers non-
profit, After-School All-
Stars, on June 3.
Joe Everson, a Taylors
artist and vocalist, per-
formed a live-action paint-
ing at the former Califor-
nia Governors residence,
creating a portrait depict-
ing the Raising of the Flag
at Iwo Jima.
Immediately following
the performance, a specta-
tor ran up to Schwarzeneg-
ger and offered $50,000
for the painting, Ever-
sons manger, Dan Lyles
said. A couple of hours
later, Joes other painting,
a portrait of Arnold in his
youth, went for $22,500
in a live auction. Arnold
and his team were very
pleased and invited us
back for next year.
During his painting,
Everson simultaneously
performed his rendition of
the National Anthem.
The total amount raised
for the evening was 1.8
million dollars. Everson
contributed $72,500 to
that total with the sale of
two paintings.

ABOUT EVERSON
Everson grew up in
Michigan and was just a
boy who loved art and
loved to draw.
In fact, it was his art
teacher who pushed him
to do more because she
saw a potential in him.
But growing up in a small,
Christian school, Everson
eventually began to lose
interest in drawing and
became more involved
in music and sports. He
eventually began traveling
around with his brother,
Ben, singing across Mich-
igan.
It was during this time
that I met Terry Snow,
Everson told the Greer Cit-
izen previoulsy. He asked
me to sing with his group,
Calvary Quartet, and I be-
gan to spend many week-
ends traveling with them
often into Canada.
After three months were
up, Everson came off the
road and tried to find
work. He started a con-
struction company and
was able to secure work
on a regular basis.

Three local artisans have
created a hub for speciali-
ty vendors in the Taylors
area.
The Main Collective Mar-
ket is set to celebrate its
Grand Opening this week-
end, marking a new ven-
ture for Karis Peake, one
of the co-founders.
Peake worked together
with Dave Kulikowski and
Lisa Davis. All three of
them met with their first
contact in the old hard-
ware store building on 1
East Main Street in Tay-
lors.
Its hard to believe that
only handful of weeks ago
we were perfect strang-
ers, Peake said. As arti-
sans and purveyors our-
selves, The Main Collective
was born out of the desire
for folks like us to have a
different style place to call
home.
We are a Collective
of talented local artists,
artisans, and purveyors
brought together in a
business model tailored to
meet their unique needs,
Peake said.
The market is composed
of two parts, a bi-weekly
indoor/outdoor market-
place and a brick and mor-
tar showroom.
We offer the Upstates
rich community of shop-

a trucking company and
wanted Everson to come
work for him. It would
mean a move down South,
but Everson was ready for
a change.
My wife, Bethany, and
I were living in an apart-
ment with our small fam-
ily, and it didnt feel like
we were gaining any trac-
tion, said Everson. So we
moved down [to Green-
ville], and I did a lot of
driving during the week.
Everson was first in-
pers a place to come and
peruse some of the best
local goods this area has
to offer, Peake said.
The Showroom is open
by appointment only, en-
abling vendors to forego
heavy markups on items
which are often needed to
make up for store fees,
Peake continued.
Located on Taylors his-
torical Main Street, the
bi-weekly market allows
for vendors to set up ta-
bles and tents to showcase
their goods.
Reaching out and con-
necting with such a warm
and welcoming communi-
ty of folks has been our
most favorite experience,
Peake said. We look for-
ward to creating new con-
nections, fostering new
ideas, and finding new
ways to partner with folks
to bring more new and
exciting events or places
[to] the Taylors Historical
area.

comes terrifying as Cal-
vin evolves and begins to
stalk the crewmembers
one by one. Not as good as
Alien, but science-fiction
fans will be satisfied with
the claustrophobia factor
and thrillists will get their
share of gore.
Wilson (R) -- With no
filter and no boundaries,
Wilson (Woody Harrelson)
makes his way through
life offering up unsolicit-
ed commentary to anyone
with an ear. Then one day
he finds out that his ex-
wife, Pippi (Laura Dern),
gave up a child for adop-
tion 17 years ago. He con-
vinces Pippi to join him
on his adventure to track
down daughter Claire (Is-
abella Amara) and take a
crack at fatherhood, albe-
it after a very late start.
Based on the graphic
novel by Daniel Clownes,
Wilson could come off
as cartoonish, but nev-
er does, thanks to an en-
dearing performance by
Harrelson. Unfortunately,
the story doesnt quite
grip the heartstrings, and
theres not enough quirk
to fill the gaps. There
is, however, quite a bit
of filthy language and
enough laughs to make it
a solid rental.
Altitude (R) -- A recal-
citrant FBI hostage nego-
tiator (Denise Richards)
takes a plane ride, a desk
job waiting on arrival. The
man seated next to her
tells her his life is in dan-
ger; the rest of his crimi-
nal gang is on the plane,
theyre taking it over and
theres a price on his head.
Can she get him off the
plane alive? Should she?
While the fight scenes are
passable for a low-budget
B movie starring Dolph
Lundgren and UFCs

Twin Peaks finds Lynch at his most confusing
I
f youve been watching
Showtimes return of
Twin Peaks, youll
probably agree that it is
the strangest show on
television. There are trees
that talk backwards, odd
purgatories and alternate
realities, and at least
three characters played
by Kyle MacLachlan. And
though it boasts much of
the atmosphere, violence
and comedy that made
Twin Peaks a television
sensation nearly three de-
cades ago, the new series
shows just how confusing
its creator, David Lynch,
has become over the
years.
Thats not to say, by any
means, that David Lynch
hasnt always been weird.
Since the beginning, his
films have been filled
with oddballs, doppel-
gangers, peculiar music
and nightmarish visuals.
The directors obsession
with the subconscious
has been the focus of
hundreds of essays and
film-school classes, and
probably stands as his
defining artistic attribute.
But despite all his cre-
ative eccentricities, there
was a time when Lynchs
work wasn't so incom-
prehensible. The original
Twin Peaks series, for
instance, was not all that
difficult to follow. In fact,

To this day, the demonic
Bob character ranks as
one of the scariest in TV
history.
Though it was ditched
after two seasons, Twin
Peaks was a surprise
phenomenon that pro-
pelled Lynchs name into
the mainstream. He also
made some of his best
films around this time,
including Blue Velvet
(1986), Wild at Heart
(1990) and the Twin
Peaks prequel, Fire Walk
With Me (1992).
While those are all su-
per flicks that encourage
multiple viewings, its im-
portant to note that just
about anybody can watch
and understand their
storylines. The characters
may be insane (especially
Dennis Hoppers in Blue
Velvet) but at least Lynch
delivers the narrative in a
linear, digestible manner.
That all changed two
classes.

The time is 1905, the
place New York City,
where Esther, a black
seamstress, lives in a
boarding house for wom-
en and sews intimate
apparel for clients who
range from wealthy white
patrons to prostitutes.
Her skills and discretion
are much in demand, and
she has managed to stuff a
goodly sum of money into
her quilt over the years.
One by one, the other
denizens of the boarding
house marry and move
away, but Esther remains,
lonely and longing for a
husband and a future. Her
plan is to find the right
man and use the mon-
ey she's saved to open a
beauty parlor where black
women will be treated as
royally as the white wom-
en she sews for.
By way of a mutual ac-
quaintance, she begins to
receive beautiful letters
from a lonesome Carib-
bean man named George
who is working on the
Panama Canal. Being illit-
erate, Esther has one of
her patrons respond to the
letters, and over time the
correspondence becomes
increasingly intimate until
George persuades her that
they should marry, sight
unseen.

Theres plenty of style and visual artistry to absorb in David Lynchs new work Twin
Peaks.

released Lost Highway
(1997), a terrifying work
that is also maddening
because of its non-linear
narrative. No matter how
many times you see it, it
still plays out like some
obscure nightmare. The
two films that followed,
Mulholland Drive (2001)
and Inland Empire
(2006) were just as per-
plexing, sending Lynch
back out of the main-
stream to stay.
Meanwhile, Esther's
heart seems to lie with the
Hasidic shopkeeper from
whom she buys cloth, and
his heart with her, but
the impossibility of the
match is obvious to them
both, and Esther consents
to marry George. When
George arrives in New
York, however, he turns
out not to be the man his
letters painted him to be.

Watch out for this
common skin cancer
DEAR DR. ROACH: I am
fair-skinned and have had
sunburns in the past, so I
have been diligent about
looking for rough, scaly
skin patches that might
turn into cancer and dark
irregular patches that
might be melanoma. But
I had not read anything
about watching for a pore
that bleeds, heals and
bleeds again. I have a place
like that on my nose and
just thought it was thin
skin. There was no bump,
no redness, no scaling;
just occasional bleeding.
Then it would heal and ev-
erything seemed fine.
Now I find out from my
dermatologist that it is
basal skin cancer, it grows
down into the skin, and
I will have to have Mohs
surgery to remove the can-
cer and plastic surgery to
repair it. I want everyone
to know to watch for this
kind of symptom and get
to a doctor immediately if
they have it. -- W.R.
ANSWER: A basal cell
carcinoma is a skin can-
cer, probably the most
common cancer in the
U.S., and is most common
among light-skinned peo-
ple. Its unusual in people
with very dark skin. It is
more common in men,
and increases in frequen-
cy with age. As you note,
sunlight is the major risk
factor, although sunburns
arent necessary to devel-
op BCC. Use of tanning
beds also greatly increase
the risk for skin cancer,

BCCs can appear in sev-
eral different forms. They
often appear as a nodule
on the face, with dilat-
ed blood vessels that can
bleed and ulcerate (caus-
ing a shallow pit). On the
trunk, they can appear as
a superficial red patch.
They also can appear as
firm, deeper, scar-like le-
sions.
Because they can appear
in such a varied manner,
ANY new skin lesion, es-
pecially in a light-skinned
person with sun exposure,
should be evaluated by
a professional. Any non-
healing sore or one that
periodically bleeds is par-
ticularly at risk.
Although BCCs rarely, if
ever, spread outside the
skin, they can grow locally
and be disfiguring. Once
one has occurred, addi-
tional skin cancers are
much more likely, so a pe-
riodic total skin exam by a
dermatologist is essential.

ANSWER: A ganglion is
a cystic structure that is
associated with a tendon
sheath or joint. They most
commonly occur in the
wrist. Its not clear why
they occur: One theory
is that they are from the
tissue around a joint that
makes joint fluid, the sy-
novium.
They often go away by
themselves, but a surgeon
can remove fluid from
them with a syringe, and
sometimes inject medi-
cation to keep them from
recurring. Surgery is oc-
casionally necessary for
painful ganglia that keep
recurring.
I urge you to resist the
advice you will get to
whack it with a book (tra-
ditionally, a Bible). That
can cause many small
ones.
