 OBJECTIVES OF PRACTICAL TRAINING

To prepare students from the course of Applied Chemistry to the views

and exposure in the working industry within their interest of study.

To assure that students of Applied Chemistry are well aware in applying

theories learnt in UiTM during their industrial training.

To develop interest in students in their field of work during the 8 weeks of

practical training.

To promote and sharpen students skills in their related interest and field

of work in their industry.

To gain unlimited knowledge and experiences in chemical testing in the

SIRIM QAS International SDN. BHD.

To better understand about standards and their related testing done in

the industry.

INTRODUCTION

THE COMPANY

1.0 Companys Background Overview

SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. provides certification,

inspection, and testing services in Malaysia. It offers certification for
management, quality management, food safety management,
environmental management, occupational health and safety management,
information technology service, and information security management
systems; and social accountability, quality management systems from
Islamic perspective, forest management systems and a chain of custody,
and ISO/IEC 20000. The companys testing services include electrical and
electronic, mechanical and automotive, fire protection, electromagnetic
compatibility, chemical and consumer, and civil and construction testing;
and communication and multimedia, as well as engineering inspection,
and CDM validation and verification services.

SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. serves food and drink, service,
mechanical and automotive, electrical and electronic, civil and

construction, chemical and materials, petrochemical, oil and gas,
information technology, communications, education, hospitality,
healthcare, logistics, agriculture, and forestry industries; and public sector
organizations. The company was founded in 1997 and is based in Shah
Alam, Malaysia with a branch in Manama, Bahrain. SIRIM QAS
International Sdn. Bhd. is a subsidiary of Sirim Bhd.

After over three decades of providing certification, inspection and

testing services under SIRIM BERHAD, SIRIM QAS International was
established as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the SIRIM Group in March
1997. Today, local and international customers from a wide cross-section
of the economy have made the company the preferred choice for their
certification, inspection and testing needs.

SIRIM QAS International is an accredited certification, inspection and

testing services provider under numerous bodies, including the National
Accreditation Body, the Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS
MALAYSIA) and the United Kingdom Accredition Services (UKAS) among

SIRIM QAS International practises the highest level of integrity in

their business dealings by abiding to SIRIM code of ethics. This applies to
gifts and other benefits. All employees must not give or accept any
vouchers with monetary value or gifts of significant values, rebates,
commissions, loans, fees, rewards, shares and securities of any kind of
employment, contract of services, favours and hospitality from any parties
which render them in a compromising situations.

 To avoid conflict of interest or perceived conflict of interest in their
business dealings, the following applies:

SIRIM QAS International staff are not to accept personal gifts from
external parties
SIRIM QAS International staff are not to present personal gifts to
external parties
SIRIM QAS International staff may accept any gifts of a corporate
nature presented to SIRIM QAS International by its business
partners without any conflict of interest.

1.4 Companys Services

SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. provides certification,

inspection, and testing services in Malaysia. It offers certification for
management, quality management, food safety management,

During the duration of industrial practical training (internship), all

of the practices were done under the Product Testing Service under the
Chemicals and Consumer division, which is related to the program of
Applied Chemistry.

PRODUCT TESTING SERVICES

1.6 Product Testing Services

Product safety and quality testing safeguards the interests of

consumers and is also necessary for regulatory compliance. The
companys well-qualified and experienced testing personnel and state-of-
the-art testing facilities can provide tests for customers products
according to a wide range of national or international standards.

Their testing services are designed to facilitate a businesss

conformance to safety and government regulatory requirements, user
expectations as well as national and international standards.

Testing services of SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd. offers testing

facilities for a wide range of products to customers from Industry,
Government Organisations and Consumers.

The testing services offered are impartial, independent, and

confidential to the customers and provide authoritative support for
industrial functions such as design and development of products, type
testing, checking products for compliance with legislation, verification of
conformity with foreign regulations and etc.

Under the Chemicals and Consumer section, further details are

discussed since during the duration of training, all of the practicals are
done under the Chemicals and Consumer section.

 CHEMICALS AND CONSUMER SECTION

2.0 Overview

The Chemical & Consumer Section (CEST) provides third party

and independent testing on industrial products, coating materials, water
effluent, microbiology, textiles and consumer products.

Because of growing consumer awareness and the competitive

conditions of todays markets, customers business will require product
testing in order to assist in providing quality chemical and consumer
products. The section have state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for
providing testing in fields such as textiles, food, potable water, coating
material, specialized oil, microbiological and advanced trace chemical
analysis.

 The laboratory under the Chemicals and Consumer Section
provides high quality and professional services to meet the endless
demand of industry in the areas of testing. The increase in customers
awareness and the competitive market have compelled business to equip
themselves with the necessary measure to protect their business growth.
Product testing is one of the measured that can assist businesses in
providing quality products to the customers.

The laboratory, located within the SIRIM complex, are fully

equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities that are ever
ready to provide assistance, evaluation and testing of products and
materials in acredible manner to the public and private sectors. They
provide extensive testing services on physical testing and chemical
analysis.

2.1 The Benefits of Testing

SIRIM QAS International test report provide assurance of product

conformity to the National and International Standard, thus
increasing customers acceptance.
Ensure that the required qualities are achieved and maintained to
facilitate acceptance by the customers.
Reduce rejections during production which will reduce unnecassary
cost and increase profit margin.
Assist businesses in meeting requirements specified in acts and
regulations (i.e Malaysia Food Act, Poison Act and Nutritional
Labelling Requirements) in relation to quality and safety.

Under the Chemicals and Consumer Section, there are two main
laboratories, namely the industrial products laboratory and non-
industrial products laboratory. Both laboratories deal with testing of
products in which customers have brought in. Under the industrial
products laboratory, there are three other laboratories, which deals with
specific range of products, that is, textile laboratory, coating materials
laboratory and engine and fuel oil laboratory. It goes for the same for the
non-industrial laboratory, which are divided into three laboratories, which
are water treatment laboratory, food and medicine laboratory as well as
fertilizer and building composite laboratory.

Further details are discussed on the coating materials laboratory

since during the internship, was assigned to the lab and all of the practices
were done in the lab.

 COATING MATERIALS LABORATORY

3.0 Introduction

The coating materials laboratory, under the industrial laboratory

division, deals with testing of products of the coating material, which are
usually paints, road marking paints and thermoplastics. The tests are
done in the lab using the state-of-the-art equipment and facilities for
providing testing in the mentioned fields. The customers will bring in
their required products to be tested, either paints, road marking paints or
thermoplastics. The tests are done in accoradance to the standards that
corresponds to the national standards and international standards.

The testings; in which the procedures must be done according to

the required standard, so that the accredition and approval for
certification can be given to the needed product. Before any accredition or
certication of approval, the results of the test must meet the specified
national standards, or international standard. Only when the test
specimen (products) meet the required standards, can the accredition and
certification of approval be given by SIRIM QAS International Sdn. Bhd.

Testing Services is carried out in accordance with the requirements of :-

 Standard, specifications, recommendations and similar documents
issued by national and international standardisation bodies.

Regulations and specifications of government authorities.

Specifications of companies, associations and industries.

3.1 Standards

The standards, either national standards or international

standards, are the requirements needed to be complied, in order for the
testing produtcs to be approved by a third party. The third party is where
product certification and approval will be given by the company, given
that after product testing, the results are in accorandance with the
specified standards.

As such, there can be many standards, either national standards, or

international standards, that the testing product are required to follow.
Normally, the applicants (customers) will state which standards they need
for product approval. There is one national standard used by SIRIM QAS
International, which is the Malaysian Standard (MS) frequently used by
clients or applicants that requires their product to meet the requirements
of the standards so that their products can be imported and used safely in
the country.

The international standards, can be of a few countries. The

international standards usually used in the lab are the British Standard
(BS), American Standard (AS), or Japanese Standard (JS), or the common
standard used by most countries, is the international standard, ISO. These
standards are also frequently used by clients or applicants either national
or internationally, to have their products tested upon. These applicants
will usually ask for specific standard so that their products, if met the
requirements of the standards, can be imported into the country and be

used safely in the country or exported to the intended country and be
used safely in that country.

These standards are used a mandatory requirement for all the test
specimens; either paints, road marking paints and thermoplastics. Only
when a specimen is tested and passed the required standard can the
product be sold and used in the country or internationally. The standards
are also used as a guide during the testing of the test specimens
(products). The procedure during the test must follow the procedures in
the standards in order for the test to get the verified accredition or
certification of approval once the test passes the required standard.
