Indonesia
Indonesia, one of the friendliest country in the world. Over 244.775.796 people live in this
developing country. It is also known with its rich culture. Every island in Indonesia has its own
culture. For example in Bali, Balinese usually sticks his two palms together to greet someone. Its
different from Java, who usually sticks the two palms together and then the person who is greeted
replies him by make one of his palms that are sticked together goes in the middle of the greeters
palms. An Islamic Province, such as Aceh usually doesnt make the greeting by touching someone.
They usually just stick their palms with a warm smile. All of those greetings are the traditional
greetings. Theyre often used in special ocassions such as family reunion, silahturami, etc.

Mostly, Modern Indonesian doesnt use that kind of greeting in his daily life. One of the
biggest factor is that globalization makes some Indonesians cultures begin to dissapear. Mostly
there are 2 kinds of greeting and closing in Indonesia that we want to tell you.

First, its a formal greeting and closing. Usually people do this in formal ocassions such as in
a meeting, meeting a client, etc. In a meeting, the boss or the one that directs the meeting will say
Selamat Pagi, bagaimana kabar anda sekalian? that means Good Morning, how are you doing?.
After that he will go on with his meetings material. To end the meeting, usually the director of the
meeting will say Terima kasih telah meluangkan waktu anda untuk mengikuti rapat ini. Semoga hari
anda menyenangkan. Selamat Siang that means Thank you for giving your time to be in this
meeting. Hope youll have a nice day. Good Afternoon. For meeting client, its different from a
meeting. Clients arent as much as the people in a meeting and we usually meet them personally in
the office or public places such as cafetaria. Before start the conversation, we usually shake their
hand, smile at them, and then say Halo. Bagaimana kabar anda? that means Hi. How are you?
Then we will continue it with business conversation. To close this conversation, we can smile and say
Terima kasih telah meluangkan waktu anda untuk datang. Senang berbisnis dengan anda that
means Thank you for your time to be here. Glad to have a business relation with you.

Second its about informal greeting and closing. Were going to divide it into 3, between girl
and girl, boy and boy, and the last girl and boy. Lets us go into the first point, between girl and girl.
Usually, when girl meets her girl friend, she usually kisses her cheek and then says Halo, apa kabar
that means Hi, how are you? Different with boys, when they meet each others, they usually greet
each others by pat their shoulder and then say Hi Bro, apa kabar that means Hi Bro, how are
you? But if boy and girl meet each other, they just smile and one of them say s Halo, apa kabar
that means Hi, how are you? After they greet each others, they go on with some conversation.
However, some conversation might be boring, and some of them will make some excuses to end up
their conversation. There are some excuses that often used in teenagers life, first by saying Sorry
mendadak aku harus pulang, mamaku telepon nih that means Sorry I must go home now, my mom
called me. Automatically his speaking partner must let him go home. It also can be like this, Sorry,
aku ada urusan nih. Aku harus pulang sekarang. Bye that means Sorry, I have something to do. I
must go home now. Bye. There are still many excuses that can be said by them.

After talking about the culture of Indonesia, you might wonder how if a foreigner introduce
himself to an Indonesian. If you are a foreigner and you need to introduce yourself, you can do it by
this, Hi, boleh kenalan ga? Namaku Ani. Namamu siapa that means Hi, may I know you? Im Ani.
Whats your name? Or if you want to make it more romantic for example if you want to get to know
an Indonesians girl quite well, you can bring some books, and then crash her, a girl that you want to
know, and then say Maaf. Aku buru-buru tadi. Kamu tidak apa apa that means Sorry. I was
rushing. Are you okay? Then she will reply Aku tidak apa-apa kok that means Im okay. After
that, you can just use it to introduce yourself by saying Maaf ya tadi. Namaku John. Namamu siapa
that means Im sorry for that. My name is John. Whats your name? She will answer her name and
you can go on with some conversations that make you know her well.

I think thats all for Indonesian greetings. Thank you for listening. Is there any question
regarding to our presentation?
