    claimedthePNPisalsousinganobsoletemethodtodetermineifaperson
    firedahandgun.


    FortunexplainedthisduringhertestimonybeforetheMakatiCityregional
    trialcourtlastweekandstressedbothmethodsofdeterminingthepresence
    ofsemencalledthe"FlorenceTest"andtheparaffintesttodetect
    gunpowderburnshavebeenabandoned50yearsago.


    FortunsaidtheFlorencetestusedbythePNPCrimeLaboratoryto
    determinethepresenceofsemeninthecomplainant&#146sunderwearand
    thecondomallegedlyusedbyoneofthesuspectsintheSubicrapecaseis
    anonspecificandunreliablemethod.


    TheFlorenceTestwasfirstintroducedin1896ortwoyearsbeforethe
    declarationofPhilippineindependenceandistherefore"very,veryold,"

    FortunsaidthePNPshouldutilizemoresensitivetests,asagainstthe
    traditionalparaffintestsincethemethodcannotreallydeterminemiscreants
    asidefromtorturingthesubjectbyhavingbothhisorherhandsplacedina
    moltenparaffinwax.


    Fortunexplainedthetestwasoriginallyknownasthe"dermalnitratetest"
    devisedbyTeodoroGonzalezoftheMexicoCitypolicedepartmentin1933.


    Theprocedureinvolvesthecoatingofaperson&#146shandwithmolten
    paraffinwaxandonceitcools,thecastsareremovedsothatthechemical
    diphenylamineacidcanbeapplied.

    wax,"FortunexplainedinthesamewayshewrotefortheGacetadelPilar,

    "Thenitratesandnitritesarebelievedtohavecomefromthegunpowderor
    primerinsidethebulletcasingthatignitesasagunisfired,"shesaid.


    Fortunsaidthemethodhasbeenabandonedbylawenforcementagencies
    allovertheworldsinceitsresultscannotbeofvalueasitconfusesthe
    public,asidefromtorturingthesubject.


    Herarticlenotedhowatechniciandripsmoltenparaffinwaxtothehandsof
    anindividualwhousuallysuffersseriousburns.


    Fortunexplainedsoil,water,food,chemicals,andothermaterialsalsohave
    nitratesandnitriteswhichmeansthatfalsepositiveresultsofthetestare
    highlylikely.


    "Thesupposedpositivebluereactionisalsoveryunreliable,"Fortunsaid,
    notingthatapermanentdocumentationofthiscolorchangeispracticallynot
    possiblebecauseitdisappearsfastandrequiresmagnification.
