In 1966 a text-edition of Symilaka's Padatagitaka, an ancient Sanskrit

monologue-play (bh'la) dating from the Gupta time (between 455 and
510 A.D.), was published by me as a doctoral dissertation for the University
of Leyden. The present book which is published as the second part of "The
Pdata<jitaka of Syamilaka" contains an English translation ofthis monologue-
play, and a complete word-index of the Padataqitaka and the three other
ancient Sanskrit monologue-plays which are closely connected with it, viz.
the Padmaprabhrtaka of Sdraka, the Dhrtavi!asamvda of Isvaradatta and
the Ubhaybhisarika of Vararuci.
The English translation of the Padatgitaka has been brought about in
cooperation with Professor P.J. Worsley (Department of Indonesian and
Malayan Studies, University of Sydney, Australia). After the publication
of the text-edition of the Padatagitaka it was planned to publish its English
translation, too. But, since the difficulties for a non-English speaking indi-
vidual in rendering Sanskrit poetry into English are insuperable, I abstained
from making an English translation and confmed myself to one in Dutch.
I am much obliged to Professor Worsley for retranslating my Dutch transla-
tion of the Pdatagitaka into English during his stay at Leyden.
Our principle in this translation of the Padatgitaka has been that it
should keep to the Sanskrit text as strictly as possible, while at the same
time it should be readable for the modem public. After the publication of
the text-edition of the Padatagitaka Professor K. de Vreese (University of
Amsterdam) wrote its review in the Indo-Iranian Journal, vol. XIII, no.l
(1971). In this review he made some useful suggestions for a different
reading and interpretation of the text. In the present translation these
suggestions have been adopted, their source being mentioned in a note on
the passage concemed.
As pointed out in the first part of the book, a study of the vocabulary
of the Padatagitaka in its relation to other Sanskrit works shows that it is
characteristic of Early Classical Sanskrit (between the first and seventh
centuries A.D.). Hence, in this second part of the book a complete word-

index of the Padatagitaka is presented. In the first part it has also been
pointed out that the Padatagitaka shares its idiom with the three other
ancient Sanskrit monologue-plays. For this reason, to the word-index of the
Padatagitaka those of the Padmaprabhrtaka, the Dhrtavi!asanwada and the
Ubhayabhisarika have been added, while these four word-indexes have been
combined into one. It is hoped that this word-index of the four ancient
Sanskrit monologue-plays may be a basis for a further lexicographical study
of Early Classical Sanskrit which is still in need of such indexes.
In respect of the Padataqitaka the word-index is based on my own text-
edition, and in respect of the three other monologue-plays on the editio
secunda of the Caturbhav.I by Dr. Motichandra and Professor V.S. Agravala
(Benares, 1959). Only in case a reading of the latter edition is obviously
wrong, an asterisk has been placed after it. In such cases a reference has
been made to the editio princeps of the Caturbhav.I by M. Ramakrishna
Kavi and S.K. Ramanatha Sastri (Trichur, 1922), or, in the case of the
Padmaprabhrtaka, to the edition of this work by Dr. J.R.A. Loman (Amster-
dam,1956.
In conclusion, I wish to express my thanks to the Netherlands Organisa-
tion for the Advancement of Pure Research (Z.W.O.) which, after enabling
me to publish the first part of the Padatagitaka of Syamilaka, has now also
made possible the publication of its second part.
