Observation Form 1

Observation Date: __06/10/2017________________Observation Time: __33 min__________

Teacher Observed: _Jessica Deaso______________ Subject/Grade Level: Pre-Algebra class

School Observed: Chisholm Trail Middle School____ Observer: _Gokhan Dogan_________

1-What was/were the learning objectives/outcomes of the lesson? (Add state objectives if
known, for example, TEKS 111.4. Grade 2.b.)

Students will identify errors in students work and make corrections.

P (5) (M) Algebraic reasoning. The student uses process standards in mathematics to evaluate
expressions, describe patterns, formulate models, and solve equations and inequalities using properties,
procedures, or algorithms. The student is expected to use trigonometric identities such as reciprocal,
quotient, Pythagorean, cofunctions, even/odd, and sum and difference identities for cosine and sine to
simplify trigonometric expressions.

2-How did the teacher begin and end the lesson?

When she started to class, Teacher selected one of the students to read the objective out loud.
She assigned warm up and she set a time limit to work on it.

As a closing of session the teacher told to students to write a parent email that explains Kevins
misconceptions on the topic.

3-What did the teacher use for teaching materials or instructional aids/equipment?

Projector,

White board,

Markers,

Camera,

Stopwatch.
4-Which instructional methods and strategies did the teacher use? (Lecture, inquiry,
discovery learning, discussions, games or simulations, demonstrations, cooperative learning,
integration of technology, socrative questioning, etc.).

Lecture method at the beginning of the lesson,

Independent learning,

Cooperative learning,

Problem Solving.

5-How did the teacher assess learning? (Informal, formal, formative, summative, oral, open-
ended, quiz, feedback etc) See Chapter 8 for more information on assessment methods.

Informal methods: The teacher performed oral assessment and also she gave some feedbacks to
students answers timely manner.

6- What can you say about the teachers philosophy/beliefs and style?
(Traditional/progressive, behaviorist, student-centered vs. teacher centered, authoritative etc).

Student-centered: Student were working on the problems and explaining the problems. The
teacher was playing a role like a facilitator.

7-How does the teacher manage classroom? Can you identify classroom management
techniques used?

Ms. Daeso was walking all the time in the classroom and actively monitoring students, checking
for understanding. She did not needed to make any formal assessment to check understanding.

8-Observe in the classroom setting and determine types of behavior students play when off-
task. What do they do when they are not paying attention? How does the teacher re-direct
them or get them back on task?

I was checking all the students during the observation, all students were well motivated and
always on task. She was walking thru the classroom and taking attention to the topic.
9-How does the teacher communicate with students (verbal, vocal, meta-verbal or non-verbal
communication such as facial, body language, use of space, motion and time?)

She preferred to communicate verbally and body language with students.

10-Who were the students in the class? What did you notice about them? (Background,
diversity, attitude, motivation, interaction, participation, etc)

I can say this classroom is a diverse class. There were 16 students in the classroom. Students
were high achievers who takes pre-algebra in 8th grade. They do not have behavioral problems.
They were intrinsic motivated and interacting in groups to solve problems. Participation is their
routine.

11-What did you see that is effective in engaging students? What do you see that is
ineffective in keeping students engaged?

Explaining the objective ant the beginning of the lesson, Students know what they will do in the
classroom as a routine. Students are working in groups and sharing their answer, she gives
feedbacks timely manner. She was facilitator.

She did not bothered with students walking around. I do not know this one is not effected the
classroom environment in the bad way.

12-What are the two instructional strategies you observed and would like to apply in your
classroom?

Exit ticket like a reflection at the end of the lesson. It will help students to see what they learned
in the lesson.

Keep asking questions will keep the students thinking and explain their work. I would like to use
the questioning technique in my classroom.

13-What are two important classroom management strategies that you observed and would
like to apply in your classroom?

Keep eye contact to students to keep them on task and also keep close distance to students to
awareness of the teacher is around.

How to start a lesson. Introducing the objective at the beginning of the lesson and warm-up
would help to good starting point of the lesson.
