Observation Form 2
For the things you observed, place a check. Please explain further about the checked item
directly below the particular section. Provide overall comments and reflections at the end.
Explain:
About half of the class was participating when the teacher was asking questions and lecturing,
but when it came to the activity, most of the students appeared on-task. Most of the students
seemed comfortable and clear on the lesson and were learning successfully. They were also able
to apply their knowledge into the classroom coin activity.
Explain:
The teacher demonstrated and counted coins out loud herself in the front of the classroom, and
also asked questions to various students and to the class to make sure they understood and were
on the same page as her. She also walked around the classroom for much of the time, monitoring
and assisting students, as well as keeping them focused on the given task.
___ Manipulatives ____ Workbooks ___ Overhead Projector ____ Smart Board
_____ Chalkboard ____ Maps ____ Computer ____ Projector
_____ Books ____ Other Audio Visuals ____ None
____ Other _____white board __________________________________________________
Explain:
She may have been using a whiteboard, but that was off-screen. There was no technology use
evident. However, coins, bags, white boards, and dry-erase markers were used within the student
groups.
Explain:
Students worked on the coin activity with their partner who was sitting at the desk next to them.
Although this sometimes led to conversation and getting off-track, overall it was an effective
form of collaborative learning.
Explain:
The student activity was a coin counting activity and involved determining the value of the coins
in their bag, with help of their partner and a white board to do the math on. The activity was
simple and straight forward and consisted of one major task.
MANAGEMENT/DISCIPLINE:
____ Stated Expectations for Behavior _____ Positive Reinforcement
___ Redirection of Inappropriate Behavior __ Encouragement of Students
_____ Self-disciplined Students ____ Effective Time Management
____ Materials Ready ____ Enthusiasm for Teaching/Learning
Explain:
She explained how everyone needed to pay attention since she could call on anyones group
next, and redirected students who were off task or misbehaving. She organized the class and was
able to effectively manage the lesson in a time-efficient manner. The materials and class were
organized, and she had a system of keeping student behavior in order.
___Overall, the class was effective in teaching students how to count and organize various coins.
There were various forms of instruction used and the class was diverse in its composition and
instructional approach. There were some students who were off-task and uninterested but the
teacher made sure to check up on them eventually and make sure they were not a problem to the
rest of the class. The instructor used a paired activity with a hands-on approach, question-answer
learning, and a demonstration of the math and grouping of coins on the board, allowing the
students to comprehend the information in a multitude of ways. The instructor was encouraging
and helpful and was effective in directing and instructing the classroom for the most part,
although it wasnt fully effective. The major problem was that several students appeared bored,
unmotivated, and disengaged, which could be fixed through more active forms of instruction.
