Lubrication system

Purpose of Lubrication System

Primary purpose is to reduce friction between moving

parts(bearings and journals) by making a thin film.

To insure that no metal to metal contact occurs.

Friction and wear held to a minimum

Oil film acts as a cushion between metal parts

Lubrication system

Purpose of Lubrication System

Reduces friction between moving parts

Cushions(Oil film between moving parts)
Absorbs heat(piston and cylinder)
Cooling
Forms a seal(Between piston and cylinder walls)
Reduces abrasive wear by filtering the oil to the oil filter
Cleans
ENGINE LUBRICATION SYSTEM: TYPES

MIST LUBRICATION SYSTEM

WET SUMP LUBRICATION SYSTEM
SPLASH LUBRICATION SYSTEM
SPLASH AND PRESSURE LUBRICATION SYSTEM
PRESSURE LUBRICATION SYSTEM
DRY LUBRICATION SYSTEM
MIST LUBRICATION SYSTEM
Used in two-stroke engines where crankcase lubrication is not
suitable
Lubricating oil is mixed with fuel 3% to 6%.
Thismixture fed to the carburetor and fuel is vaporized and oil in
the form of mist goes via the crankcase into the cylinder
It
lubricates the main cylinder parts, rod bearings, connecting rod,
piston rings etc.
Simplicity and low cost as it does not require any pump
Causes heavy exhaust smoke
Corrosion of bearings
Insufficient lubrication during closed throttle
WET SUMP LUBRICATION SYSTEM
Bottom of the crankcase contains an oil pan or sump from which the

lubricating oil is pumped.

After lubricating oil flows back to the sump

Three types:

Splash

Splash and Pressure

Pressure feed
DRY SUMP LUBRICATION SYSTEM
Supply of oil through pump is carried in an external tank and circulate to the
various bearings
Scavenging pump is used to remove the dripping oil from parts and then
feed to the filter then sump
Pressure relief valve is used to by-pass the oil to the sump in case of
clogging problem
Separate oil cooler is used to provide cooling
CRANKCASE VENTILATION
During the compression and
expansion strokes, the gas contains
sulphuric acid/ water vapour inside
the cylinder gets pass the piston
rings and enters the crankcase that
lead to the corrosion of steel parts
and sludge formation in the
lubricating oil.
To remove blow-by, a fresh amount
of air is passed through the
crankcase known as crankcase
ventilation.
Filter is used at the inlet of air and
fan blows the cooling air and oulet
opening tube is near to the end of
the engine block.
