Title of Lesson: Divisibility

Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills/Standards: (to be taken from this link)
http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter111/index.html

Objective/Purpose: students will practice the divisibility rule by engaging in a

class activity. The students will uses mathematical processes to acquire and
demonstrate mathematical understanding. The student is expected to B) use a
problem-solving model that incorporates analyzing given information, formulating
a plan or strategy, determining a solution, justifying the solution, and evaluating
the problem-solving process and the reasonableness of the solution;

Introduce Lesson: Students prior knowledge of this lesson is the divisibility rule.
Students know the Divisibility rule for numbers 2-10. We will introduce the divisibility
rule: problem solving starting with a warm up. They have three problems that they are
expected to complete. Give the students 10 minutes to answer these three problems
showing work and thinking process. Once the 10 minutes are up go over the problems. (I
put on here how to solve the problem if students are confused on why or why not the
number is divisible.) Once students are done with the warm up, we will be introducing
problem solving. After you show them the model problem give them the worksheet I
have attached and allow the students to work on it independently.
Warm Up Example:
Is 2,712 divisible by 9?
Rule: A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.
Find the sum of the digits:
2 + 7 + 1 + 2 = 12
12 is not divisible by 9.
The rule says that 2,712 is not divisible by 9

Is 2,990 divisible by 10?

Rule: A number is divisible by 10 if its ones digit is 0
Look at the ones digit: 2,990
The ones digit is 0.
The rule says that 2,990 is divisible by 10

Is 91,837 divisible by 3?
Rule: A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 3.
Find the sum of the digits:
9 + 1 + 8 + 3 + 7 = 28
28 is not divisible by 3.
The rule says that 91,837 is not divisible by 3.

Lesson: introducing Divisibility rule: problem solving.

There are 9,432 paper clips in the boxes in the supply cabinet. If each box contains
the same number of paper clips, how many boxes could there be?
A.10 B.9 C.5
Model this problem on the white board, students should be
working out the problem with you in their math journals.
PLEAS stress the importance of remembering the rules and
using each rule to help solve this problem. Help the students
pick out the important information from the word problem.
Allow them to notice the word EACH explain to them the
importance of that word in a math problem. Also reassure them
that the big number is not a reason to find this problem
intimidating. Start off with reminding them of the rules we will
use to solve this problem.
Rules:
number is divisible by 10 if its ones digit is 0.

A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits is divisible by 9.

A number is divisible by 5 if its ones digit is 0 or 5.

solve
Which number evenly divides 9,432? Try each number.

First try the "divisible by 10" rule on 9,432.

Look at the ones digit:

9,432
The ones digit is 2.

The rule says that 9,432 is not divisible by 10.

Next try the "divisible by 9" rule on 9,432.

Find the sum of the digits:

9 + 4 + 3 + 2 = 18
18 is divisible by 9.

The rule says that 9,432 is divisible by 9.

Finally, try the "divisible by 5" rule on 9,432.

Look at the ones digit:

9,432
The ones digit is 2.
The rule says that 9,432 is not divisible by 5.

9,432 is divisible by 9. There could be 9 boxes of paper clips in

the supply cabinet.
When you are done modeling this problem you will find the worksheet on the page.

Re-Teach: If students did not understand todays lesson I will work with students by groups.
Each group will be formed by the grades of this worksheet. Whoever scored the worst will be
paired in groups together with me and I will be able to work out different word problems with
them. Answering their questions and concerns.
