5. TITLE OF THE TOPIC

COMPARATIVE EVALUATION OF EFFECT OF MINERAL TRIOXIDE

AGGREGATE, CHITOSAN NANOPARTICLES AND BIOACTIVE GLASS
AS DIRECT PULP CAPPING AGENTS.
A RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED CLINICAL TRIAL.
6. BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK
6.1 NEED FOR THE STUDY
Direct pulp capping is a procedure in which an exposed dental pulp is covered with a protective
dressing or cement that protects the pulp from additional injury and permits healing and
repair.1 Wide arrays of materials are being used for pulp capping. 2 Research is being carried out
in search for newer & better materials to increase the success rate.

This study includes materials namely Chitosan 3,4 and Bioactive glass5 which are bioactive, osteo-
inductive and have the ability to induce mineralisation. Studies have demonstrated Mineral
Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) produces better results when used as direct pulp capping agent. 2 A
study was conducted which showed the bioactivity of Chitosan can be enhanced by
incorporating MTA. Hence, in the present study, Bioactive glass, chitosan and a combination of
MTA and chitosan will be used as experimental groups which will be compared with MTA. 4

6.2 REVIEW OF LITERATURE

1. A study was done to evaluate the histological pulp responses of Calcium hydroxide
and Bioactive glass placed directly on exposed pulp tissues, where twenty teeth to
be extracted due to orthodontic reasons were selected. These teeth were divided
into two groups of 10 teeth each and treated with direct pulp capping agents. After
60 days, the teeth were extracted and prepared for histological evaluation. The
results of the study showed that Bioactive glass appears to be superior to Calcium
hydroxide as a pulp capping agent in primary teeth. 5

2. A study was done to evaluate the histo-morphologic response of human dental

pulps capped with mineral trioxide aggregate and Ca(OH) 2 cement. Pulp exposures
were performed on the occlusal floor of 40 human permanent premolars. After
that, the pulp was capped either with or Ca(OH) 2 and MTA and restored with
composite resin. After 30 and 60 days, teeth were extracted and processed for
histologic exam. Histological reports showed a lower response of Calcium hydroxide
for the dentin bridge formation, when compared with MTA. 6
3. A study was done on 14 deeply carious molars with irreversible pulpitis which were
indicated for extraction. Teeth were selected from patients 1628 years old with
history of lingering pain. After isolation, caries removal and pulp exposure, MTA was
used in pulpotomy treatment. Patients were evaluated for pain after 24h. Teeth
were extracted after 2 months and studied histologically. There was no history of
