The moon rises
big and blood orange
over New Jersey

The moon rises big and blood orange over
New Jersey, in need of Visine and
hungover after drinking too much Merlot
with prostitutes in Paris. The moon sets
over Egypt burning and now it is the color
of ice water blue. The moon can't wait
for the methadone clinic to open in the
morning. It will be up all night crawling
inside itchy skin, over the back alleys and
main drags of Trenton and Pennsylvania,
looking for a fix. It will crack the shades
apart at 1 a.m to see if you are with the one
you are supposed to be with, having sex.
The moon will watch every stabbing tonight
and every kiss. Dolphins are washing up dead
kind of annoying because I was busy and
in alarming numbers on east coast shores
right now on a rising tidal moon. Are we
to blame for these lesions in their lungs?
The moon will hide nothing tonight
as the church bells chime the hour of 9.

White Flowers
Every time I see a bundle of white flowers
I think of my mom on hospital bed sheets
borrowing her last lungs of air. Before
passing it on, sharing it with the rest of us
as a cooling wind makes her way through
bamboo. My sisters and brother sat
arrayed in a semicircle, waiting all night for
her to die. I had to leave. Why was I in such
a rush? My mom was unconscious as
I leaned in and whispered, See ya later, Every time I see a
a nervous laugh caught a wave around the bundle of white flowers
room and I left and it was a hot June I think of my mom on
evening outside. My mother was so small hospital bed sheets
and frail, shrinking as the hours crawled
into closets. Yesterday my heart stopped
and started and stopped for a few beats.
I stood there with no heartbeat and it was
had work to do and I asked mom if she had
lent me some air from Mount Fuji, if she
could squeeze her hand around this
reluctant thing in my ribs or send an errant
spark from New Jersey, whatever the
burning did not consume.

Indie Pop Songsmith
Tristen Brings Her Unique
Melodic Sound to Philly
Evocative, rich, hypnotic, Nashville-
based songsmith Tristen Gaspadarek
is unquestionably delightful during
our interview.
Its about me and my perspective, but
I work really hard to try to uncover truths
about what its like to live in the time that
we live, she says of her inclusive attitude
toward music. When I hear a story and
it resonates with me, thats magic.
Listening to Caves, the sophomore
album by indie/pop singer-songwriter
Tristen, allows one to further behold
the charmingly infectious and poignant
spirit of her work. Whether it be the
synthesizer-laden track Catalyst,
a vibrant pop tune that sounds like the
love child of the classic Madonna and
Eurythmics sounds, or the dreampop
ballad Island Dream, a comforting
track that almost cleanses you with
tranquility, Tristen is an artist who can

occupy different sounds and genres
effortlessly, while also giving them
surprising depth. She can layer
an electronica dance song with dramatic
themes on love and relationships.
Or a catchy pop tune like Gold
Star, oozing with plenty of thorough
ingenuity that lies under strangely
haunting pop hooks. Whats important
is to give the songs meaning without
sacrificing the fun in the process.
A deviation from her previous album,
Charlatans at the Garden Gate, an
alt-country folk flavored EP, Tristens
Caves was a sign of her impressive
ability to challenge herself, something
she makes constant.
The thing for me is always figuring
out a way to challenge myself, she
says. This sort of resolute mindset
continues with her upcoming album,
Sneaker Waves.

Tristen has a bevy of tour dates
scheduled around the new EP. The
unique title was the result of Tristen
and her band taking a few days to
chill out at Rockaway Beach in Oregon
while on tour, and Tristen coming
upon an eye-catching signpost.
I saw a sign for a sneaker wave,
she recalls. Its an unanticipated coastal
wave thats much larger in size than
the other waves that come before it. If a
sneaker wave should come, you may be
swept away to your death. Tristens voice
resonated with the symbolic nature of
the wave and its ability to haphazardly
destroy anything in its wake.
Youre walking along your life
and in any moment in time you can
be swept away, and thats the end.
She found sneaker wave to be an
undeniably musical name, a great
sounding name, and one on which
she was hooked.
Tristen is so well known for her sweet,
wide-eyed vocals, that her writing can
arguably be overlooked. Surprisingly
enough, the Nashville songstress reveals
that singing came easy to her while
songwriting was difficult.
Songwriting was hard, she recalls.
Its an unexpected admission given the
remarkable and original songs Tristen
has crafted. I need to learn how to
jam on the guitar so I can be a better
songwriter and I can write hooks for my
songs on these instruments. A lot of my
learning instruments is about trying
to be a better songwriter. Its all about
being better and aware.
Because I listen to music and I care
about it, I realize that I have really big
shoes to fill, she explained.

highlighting a much-anticipated album
thats sure to be something fresh and
inventive. Since her debut album,
Charlatans at The Garden Gate,
Tristen has dipped in and out of varying
genres. Coming from country/folk
beginnings would certainly make many
musicians apprehensive about jumping
into synth pop. But Tristen pulled it
off. It was important for her to push the
limits of her artistry and ideas.
This new album isnt about chasing
aesthetics but about my own feelings
about what sounds good, she said.
Its about going back to my instincts.
Judging by her revelations on the new
EP, fans surely wont be disappointed.

Luiz Vilela:
Painting
from the
Heart
L
uiz Vilela, a Brazilian-born artist
living in Lambertville, N.J., has never
read a how-to book on career building.
He has his own vision: Im on a boat.
Sometimes the boat goes to the right,
sometimes to the left, but I know its
going to the ocean. It gets there, little
by little, and you keep going. Thats how
I see it, and I want to meet wonderful
people on the way.
Vilelas talent was recognized early on
by his family in Brazil. When he turned
10, he was enrolled in an art school. By
the time he was 13, the teachers said
there was nothing more they could teach
him. Vilela went on to study art at the

Guignard School in Belo Horizonte, MG,
and then to the Federal University of
Rio de Janeiro, where he received a B.A.
degree in architecture.
After college, he landed a job in
graphic design, shared childrens book
illustrations with his teacher and writer
Angela Carneiro, and started working in
theater as an assistant of Helio Eichbauer,
a famous Brazilian set designer.
Subsequently, Vilela was introduced
to artist Amador Perez, who became
his friend and mentor, and encouraged
him to apply to art schools in New York.
In 1995, Vilela was accepted into Pratt
Institutes associate degree program,

where he studied illustration and
graphic design. After graduation, he
needed to find a job to stay in the U.S.
for another year, and opportunity came
knocking when two friends invited to
join them for lunch at Golden Books
publishing house, their employer. Vilela
brought his portfolio with him, and
while waiting in the lobby, a designer
noticed his book and asked to see it.
When a small crowd gathered around
to look at the work, the director offered
him an interview, and was offered a job
in the art department.
After Random House acquired
Golden Books in 2001, he stayed on,

working as a graphic designer and
doing other art-related assignments,
including illustrating the classic
childrens story Pat the Bunny. During
this period, Vilela also studied at the
Art Students League of New York.
In 2007, after visits to Hunterdon
and Bucks Counties, he moved to
Lambertville, where he began painting
local scenes, including the Boat House
bar, located in an alley near the Delaware
Canal. Vilela calls the Boat House one of
the most fascinating, paintable buildings
he has ever seen. Boat House owner
James Bulger while still alive invited
him to show his work there, and he

subsequently gained representation
from a local gallery owner.
In 2012, he left his job at Random
House to pursue his painting career
full time. He also began studying
at Studio Incamminati, an art school
founded by artist Nelson Shanks, and
with other artists such as David Leffel
and his wife Sherrie McGraw, Daniel
Sprick, Jeremy Lipking, Robert Liberace,
and friend Kathy Anderson, to name
a few. By Andersons invitation, Luiz
started attending painting sessions with
master Richard Schmid at the Village
of Putney, Vermont. Vilela credits them
with helping him develop a classic style
reminiscent of the Renaissance masters.
Vilela has won a number of local
awards, and his work has been also
included at the Phillips Mill Art
Dignity, charcoal on toned paper, 2014, 16 13

National Arts Club, and the Salmagundi
Club (where he is a member) in New
York City. He was bestowed with three
awards in 2014 by ARC/Art Renewal
Center: Best Portrait and Acquisition

and Honorable Mention for Dignity,
a charcoal drawing depicting New York
model Henry dressed as a homeless
person. Dignity also won an award
in Salmagundis Black and White

seated at the Boat House bar while
writing the menu of his restaurant won
the Best Portrait award at the National
Arts Club in New York City.

TINICUM ARTS FESTIVAL
BOASTS THE FINEST IN
BUCKS COUNTY ART
For 68 years, the Tinicum Arts Festival
has been the premier showcase for
Bucks County artists. Each year,
musicians, painters, authors, actors,
and master crafters gather to display
their best work alongside the beautiful
Delaware River.
This years festival takes place
July 89 at Tinicum Park in Erwinna,
Pa. For an affordable entrance fee,
guests will be greeted by strolling
magicians, caricature actors, and

The Tinicum Civic Association is a
volunteer non-profit organization that
encourages artistic talent, supports
community wellbeing and preserves
the historic Stove Mill in Erwinna.
Festival highlights will include both
old favorites and new additions. As in
previous years, the centerpiece will be the
Art Barn, where the judged masterpieces
of 200 regional artists will be on display
for viewing and purchase. Guests can
also participate in a silent auction,
where they will find a range of items and
experiences including massages, private
party venues, and getaways to private
residences in Ireland, Ecuador, Montana
and Bucks County.
A unique feature of the festival is
the live masterpiece creation in which
painter Christine McHugh completes
an entire work of art before the audience.
Afterwards, the painting will be up for
bid at the Silent Auction.
Families will love the kids crafts
and discovery tents. Volunteers have

shirts through the air for Daisy to see.
Anthony Robert was formerly known
as Vestiti of Doylestown. Vestiti means
suits in Italian. Simone had bought
Silvestri Custom Tailors, created Vestiti,
and then opened with partner Tony
Williams as Anthony Robert from a
shared passion for clothing and fashion.
The pair redesigned the store, changed
suppliers, and now carry an extensive
line of ready-made fashion.

Camarota retired two years ago
from some of the top retail apparel
companies, and has headed up visual
merchandising, store construction and
creative marketing. She has worked
for Banana Republic, Bloomingdales,
three of the Este Lauder companies,
Aveda, and most recently, Limited
Brands. Needless to say, she is qualified
for her job.
With this experience, I am able to
pick from the wish lists of what the mall-
based stores would like to give as far as
the customer experience goes, and apply
it here every day, Camarota said.

Where Family and Food Come First
T
he twisting back roads of the
Bucks County countryside are
resplendent with the hidden
gems they conceal. From quaint country
stores to bustling farmers stands and
from cozy inns to lively taverns, social
and cultural treasures dot the map. But
with many featuring histories that stretch
back centuries, time can weigh heavily
on our local jewels. Unless, of course, they
receive just the right attention.
Enter the Mignano family. Five years
ago, the Ottsville Inn, located at 245
Durham Road. just off Route 611, got the
TLC it so desperately deserved. With
a history of serving loyal customers
over nearly 150 years, Filippo Mignano
purchased the historic Ottsville Inn
and, along with his son, Pietro, lovingly
restored the location toits former glory.
Adding the final piece to the reinvention
of his new restaurant, Filippo crafted

a menu that reflected both his palate
and his heritage. Hailing from a small
town near Palermo, Sicily, his epicurean
philosophyis turning this once-hidden
gem into a culinary hotspot.
Like the winding roads that lead
you to the Mignanos doors, Filippos
journey has its own set of twists and
turns. Immigrating to the United States
from Sicily in 1972, he did not come
stateside with chef hat in hand. When I
first arrived, I moved to Queens and did
construction for a couple years, Filippo
says, A friend of mine was opening a
restaurant in Virginia, and I decided
to go downand help him. After only a
few years inthe business, he discovered
he was a natural.And with a newfound
confidence, Filippo conjured thoughts
of one day opening his own place.
Moving back north, Filippo
continued his culinary career, teaming

with an old friend as part of the team
behind Giuseppes Restaurant in
Ambler. But a fire still burned within.
I decided to move and branch out on
my own, he explains.The second I
saw this place, I fell in love. After an
extensive renovation withthe Mignano
family handling most of the work,
the Ottsville Innwas transformed.
Featuringbeautiful wood detail and
maroon accents throughout, the
dining room can serves as either the
perfect backdrop for a romantic dinner
or cozy family gathering. The full-
servicehorseshoe bar with high-top
tables lends the perfect space for locals
and newcomers alike to congregate
ina welcoming atmosphere. We have
one of the friendliest bars in the area,
Filippo says. Its always full.

prosciutto, cured soppresata, aged
sharp provolone, roasted red peppers,
tomatoes, Italian olives and red onion.
But its the true Italian flavor at
the heart of their menu that has the
Ottsville Inns patrons coming back
for more. And first on the list:pasta.
Entrees include the pasta boscaiola
served with ham, mushrooms, red
onion and peas with a splash of white
wine in a rose cream sauce tossed with
penne. Another popular choice is the
pasta sorrentina, featuring diced plum
tomatoes, fresh basil, a splash of white
wine and marinara sauce tossed with
potato gnocchi and topped with
mozzarella, parmesan and oregano.
But the Mignanos hardly limit
themselves to fresh flour-and-water
delights. Eggplant takes center stage at

of the menu dedicated exclusively to
this hearty vegetable. Along with classic
parmigiana andmelezani manicotti, the
melazani Florentine featuresbattered
eggplant, baby spinachwith extra-
virgin olive oil, garlic, tomato sauce,
mozzarella, Parmesan and oregano.
Otherfeatured entrees includethepollo
Sorrento, chicken with mushrooms and
a splash of white wine simmered in a
homemade tomato sauceand topped
with mozzarella and the filet pizzaiola,
a tenderfilet mignon topped with a
seasonedmarinara, mozzarella,
Parmesan andoregano.
But like any true culinary explorers,
the Mignanos like to offer something
a little out of the ordinary. Some chefs
arent open to change, Pietro says.
Here, you can get whatever you want;
anything can be made. If we have the
available ingredients, we can do it. If

you come in and are tired of seeing the
same things on the menu, we will make
you something new and different.
Featuring daily additions to their
menu, the Ottsville Inn is constantly
finding way to surprise the most loyal
of customers. Special dishes may
include the Chilean sea bass topped
with scallops, shrimp, fresh pomodora
and asparagus or the veal rollatini
crowned with shrimp and scallops,
stuffed withpanchetta and spinach and
accompanied bybutternut squash all in
a sherry wine sauce.
For those looking for a more casual
bite, the Ottsville Inns popular bar
menu is filled with all your favorite
comfort foods. From gourmet pizza
gluten-free crusts are available to
homemade Focaccia bread and from
Italian hoagies to the classic burger,
there isnt a craving you cant satisfy.
For families, a childrens menu is
always available.
The Ottsville Inn is available for
parties of up to 60 people and, they
can also cater or prepare any party tray
for your special occasions. And its that
