Its definitely a little weird, but the swim team is so wel-

on, congratulate me.
But its her grandfather who helped teach Paulsen about the
true appreciation of representing your school.
My dad played football in Fresno, so my grandpa under-
stands how important high school (athletics is), Paulsen
said. [My grandpa] was very proud of me to win state (for
my school).
She only became a state champ after nailing her final dive
of the competition. Trailing the first-place diver by 60
points, Paulsen used an inward 1 1/2 pike.
I was really confident in myself. I put that dive last
because thats my bread-and-butter dive. Im really comfort-
able with that dive, Paulsen said. I won the meet by two
points.
Setting a new state record in the process.
Getting to the top was not as simple as it seems. Because
the PAL does not have diving, Paulsen cant qualify through
the normal league championship process. Instead, she goes
to open meets that are sanctioned by CCS to qualify divers
into the section meet. For Paulsen, that means competing in
the Bryan Tanner Memorial hosted by Presentation High
School. She has used that particular event all four years to
qualify for CCS and this year was no different, although she
was a little stunned to finish second.
For me, the pressure is not so much. Since Im a club
diver and dive year round, the CCS qualifying score is not
a too tough to reach. I think the score is pretty reasonable and
thats because there arent many divers in the area. If they set
the bar too high, not as many kids would even make CCS,
Paulsen said. You always want to do your best and show off
your diving. I didnt do well (at the Tanner) and I felt bummed
about that, but I made my score.
Paulsen did get a trial run of pressure-packed dives in CCS
as she was neck and neck with a teammate from her club
team. In a foreshadowing of things to come, Paulsen took
the CCS crown on her final dive of the competition.
Now, Paulsen is off to her next challenge diving for the
highly-rated Stanford swim and dive team. As much as she
never set out to be a state champion, Paulsen wasnt exactly
sure she wanted to compete in college. But after seeing the
success her sister Talbott has had at Yale, both athletically
and personally, Mia decided to take on the challenges of one
of the top academic and athletic universities in the country.
I saw how much [Talbott] loved [her college experiences
so far] and how she blossomed there and that kind of inspired
me, Paulsen said. I had a list of schools where I would love
to go. I think I would have been happy being a big fish in
small pond, but I figured I should see where I could go (with
diving).

scheduled to enter the final year of his rookie contract. Carr had
imposed a deadline of the start of training camp in late July.
Carr has transformed the Raiders from a perennial loser into a
contender after being drafted in the second round in 2014. He was
part of a stellar draft class led by AP Defensive Player of the Year
Khalil Mack and third-round guard Gabe Jackson, who have been
key to Oaklands turnaround.
He lost his first 10 starts as a rookie before winning seven
games his second year and taking the Raiders to the playoffs in
2016 with a 12-4 record. Carr missed the final game of that sea-
son and the playoff loss to Houston with a broken leg.
But hes healed now and a major reason why the Raiders are the
preseason favorites to win the AFC West and contenders to dethrone
the New England Patriots as the top team in the conference.
