Learning Assessment Throughout the course the teacher will make informal observations of the
for Course student to assess their strengths and weaknesses with the EO. At the end of
each trimester the teacher will conduct a formal, face-to-face, verbal
assessment to determine their level of attainment. A rubric will be used to
determine if they are emerging in the skill, developing in the skill, or secure
with the skill. Student work product may also be used as an assessment.

Course Structure This is a standards based curriculum with the expectation that the students
Description will be secure in the TOs by the end of the academic year. The instruction
will progress through the TOs from the largest parts of sounds of words
through progressively smaller sound parts. The instruction may also be
cyclical and cycle back through skills as a review depending on what other
skills are being presented. The instruction will follow the sequence:

1. Listening skills and sound matching (TO1)

2. Sounds and words (TO2)

3. Rhyming words (TO3)

4. Blending sounds (TO4)

5. Segmenting sounds (TO5)

Seat Time of Course The academic year is 180 days. The students attend school 7 hours a day, 5
days a week. Whole-group direct instruction of the phonological awareness
skills, or TOs, is conducted in 10-minute chunks once or twice a day for a
maximum of 20-minutes of whole-group direct instruction. Materials and
activities that support learning of the TOs are utilized and available
throughout the day during other instructional activities and for free-choice
exploration.

Seat Time of RLO 20-30 minutes (does not need to be completed continuously)
