FABI Assignment

Purpose:

For this assignment I needed to complete a functional assessment-based intervention (FABI).

The purpose of this assignment, was to identify an actual student to work with, as I learned to

design, implement, and evaluate a functional assessment-based intervention. I worked by

myself on this assignment instead of working in a group as intended, due to schedule conflicts.

How you addressed the assignment requirements (if relevant)

This assignment was broken into five steps, the first step being to identify a student to work

with and obtain the permission from the student, parent, and educators to participate in this

project. The next step was to conduct the functional assessment and determine the behavior to

focus on. I did this by talking to the student, his parents and teachers, and by looking at his

academic records. For step three I collected base-line data on the behavior I was monitoring

(off-task behavior).

For step four I designed the intervention by using two questions as a guiding factor, Can the

student perform the replacement behavior? Do antecedent conditions represent effective

practices? Finally, for step five I tested the intervention and reported my results.

Why you chose to revise (if you did)

There was no revision needed for this assignment.

FABI Assignment
What you learned from this assignment and its contribution to your development as a special

educator.

This assignment was one of the hardest for me to complete. Partially due to a lack of

collaboration with my peers at work. When I began the FABI, it seemed as if I was very

supported by co-workers who offered assistance and opportunities for me to collect data and

design the intervention. When it came to implementing the intervention, I found that one of my

biggest factors, fidelity with implementation, was lacking. Where I originally had support and

agreements to follow through with agreed upon plans, there seemed to forever be a lack of

planning and time.

As a whole, one of the biggest things I learned from this assignment, apart from the basics of

how to develop and complete a FABI, was how important collaboration and communication

was. Understanding as well, that implementing any intervention or behavior modification

successfully, takes time, consistency and fidelity.
