Ultra Fine Particulate Matter

Ultra Fine Particulate Matter
Particulate matter equal to or below 2.5 micrometer in aerodynamic diameter
1/30th the width of a human hair

Primary and Secondary formation mainly from combustion sources

Health Studies in USA have shown an association between ultra fine

particulates and increased hospital admissions and even premature death

COMEAP indicates that 1 g/m-3 decrease in PM2.5 over a lifetime exposure of

80 years, will gain 1.5-3.5 days per individual

Regulation of PM2.5
Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council
of 21 May 2008 on ambient air quality and cleaner air for Europe.

PM2.5 annual mean objective of 25 g/m3 in the 2007 Air Quality Strategy

PM 2.5 annual mean objective of 20 g/m3 by 2020

Predicted Emissions PM2.5

Energos Plant
 Measured Values PM = 0.45 mg/m-3
PM2.5 = <0.03 mg/m-3

Adjusting to WID Limit PM = 0.32 g/s

(Dust =10mg/m3) PM2.5 = 0.021 g/s

Expected operational emissions much lower than the

Limit Values

Put it in to perspective

A petrol car idling emits 0.00004 g/s PM2.5

HGV idling emits 0.00123 g/s PM2.5

Summary

PM2.5 not possible to discern a level where there are no adverse effects

- Annual concentration levels set in Air Quality Strategy 2007

- Knowsley EfW will only contribute 0.008% of current standard

Based on COMEAP plus an increase sensitivity of 1.3

(as applied to earlier study) the increased PM2.5 will result in
15 minutes reduction in life expectancy for an 80 year exposure.
