Stress

By: Billie Joys Odogan

According to Oxford Dictionary, stress means emphasis given to a particular syllable or word in
speech, typically through a combination of relatively greater loudness, higher pitch and longer duration.
Normally the stress falls on the first syllable. However, the word itself stress, the stress is found on the
last syllable. In connection, when we say, we are stressed on something, we put emphasis on it by
focusing, thinking and spending most of our time doing it. It directly means pressure or tension exerted
on a material object situation or even to a person.

The most prominent competition in schools today is that who has the most number of pimples,
stress marks and eye bags. That sound funny, but it is precisely true. It is due to sleepless nights on making
visual aids and before you finished it your younger sister has accidently pour water into it. You rushed on
encoding your report then you run to the computer shop to print it, afterwards you have found out that
your file was corrupted, worst you need to pass it on that day. Paste there, cut there doing portfolios
and a lot more. And when the teacher is discussing, the students were silent as if they are listening, but
the truth is the students could not understand anything because their bodies and minds were stressed.
The knowledge imparted by the teacher could not sink in. Hmmm that is how stressful and adventurous
a students life is. Is it still healthy? Are students still learning?

Neuroscientists have discovered how stress can damage the brain. Their findings might explain
why young people who are exposed to stress early in life are prone to mental problems such as anxiety
and mood disorders later in life as well as learning difficulties.

Findings indicates that stress may happen during the updating of memories in light of new
information and induce a shift from a flexible, cognitive form of learning towards a rather rigid, habit-like
behavior

Furthermore, stress behavior memory retrieval impairs the recall of information learned
previously which may directly affect performance at exams. In education, knowledge needs to be
frequently updated by new facts or concepts relating to prior knowledge. In addition, to its effect on
memory encoding and retrieval, stress appears to impair this integration of new information into existing
knowledge structures. That is why if students are stressed the information cannot get in.

However, another body of research reveals that stress can actually enhance the performance and
well-being of a person. Yes there is something known as good stress and that is called eustress. Research
shows that making people aware of good stress is more powerful antidote to its ills than jarring them with
statistics.

Eustress can help boost motivation, focus and energy; create a feeling of excitement; and improve
performance and decision-making.

Perhaps, teachers has a vital role in helping the students achieve their dreams in life and that will
not be possible if students were having stress. I am not saying that teachers should not give students task
for them to learn but they could help them be motivated amidst of the stressful situation they had. Instead
of highlighting negative consequence they could encourage students by using positive reinforcement. It
is essential for the student to understand the value of their task in their future career.
Therefore stress could be turned into something positive. As what my classmates asked me,
What is the difference between bad day and a good day? I just wait for his answer. He told me it is your
ATTITUDEE. And he is right. Stress could help us be matured and responsible if we will just be positive.
Stress can improve memory and learning. And the best thing we can do to have the right attitude towards
stress is to pray. Let us leave everything to Gods hands. He can give us peace of mind. Look to God, do
not be discouraged, you are not alone, see the one who will give you courage to go on. As whwat the Bible
says in 1 Peter 5:7, Casting all your cares upon him, for he careth for you.

I do encourage my fellow students, if stress comes our way, lets embrace it, rather than run away
from it.
English Proficiency for College Students

By: Princiss Cacho

English is a global language. It is our tool for learning and for communication. English plays a vital
role in our studies. In academic, English is the medium of instruction of teachers in teaching, and for us
students it is our medium for communication especially in major subjects like Math, English and Science.
Instructional materials like books, chart, magazine, and others, English is used.

The hope of producing better English speakers lies in the hands of proficient teachers but we
students have a big part to become proficient in English. We, students should practice using it regularly in
order for us to develop and enhance English proficiency.

Being an English proficient student it will change our lifestyle, our relationship with others and
our status from being a normal students to become a WOW student. Lifestyle in English proficiency
meaning you can communicate using English language with teachers, classmates and other people who
can speak English which can give us great opportunities in the near future.

On the contrary, using the English language in communicating with ordinary people like in the
market, and people who live in barrios may decrease their lifestyle in life because they may lose their
confidence in communicating with us, which may lead into poor lifestyle.

Communication in the major foundation in building relationship. English proficiency may help
build a strong relationship with others especially to the foreigners and Asburys stakeholders are from
USA which is good for the school. But being fluent in English may also weaken the relationship we have
from others especially for those who do not have the ability to speak English/

Therefore we should have the wisdom when and where to use it. However, for us to be globally
competitive and to be an eloquent professional someday, we must have the mastery of the English
language. Perhaps, we should stay humble and we must not brag about it to others, instead let us be an
instrument to motivate others to learn the English language.
Concerned Students

By: Billie Joys Odogan

Asbury College, Inc. has offered General Board of Global Ministry (GBGM) Scholarship. This
scholarship grant a half or full payment of tuition fee. The scholars who are full were responsible in
maintaining cleanliness in the school surroundings. Each of them has their respective area to clean. They
are the concerned individuals to the schools cleanliness in the school surroundings. Each of them has
their respective area to clean. They are the concerned individuals for the schools cleanliness.

Some of the GBGJM Scholars were cleaning their areas and they see to it that before leaving the
campus their respective areas were still clean. And that is very awesome. On the other hand, some of
them still need to be reminded about their task. And I do not know their reason, may be they could reason
out they were busy but considering the help that the management is giving, they must have the initiative
to do their task. However, because not all students were GBGM Scholars other were CHED and DSWD.
Other students were depending on the GBGM Scholars to clean. Although they could see a lot of papers,
plastic wrappers and bottles scattered around the school campus, they will just passed by and ignore it.
As if they could see nothing.

Therefore the question is , are the GBGM Scholars were the only concerned students maintain
cleanliness on the school campus? Can we blame them every time the school is dirty?

As we enter the school classrooms, paper here.. plastic there.. Chairs were not arranged as if there
were children who just played there. You could not imagine that college students were the ones using it.

Wake up! Wake up! College students. The appearance of our school will reflect our personality.
And we will be proud if other people will be impressed to where we are studying. Perhaps, if all of us will
be responsible to each of our trash. I believe we will not have a hard time in maintaining cleanliness on
our school campus. So, let us start to make a change. Whether you are a GBGM Scholar or not, all of us
must have the concern to our school because we are the concerned individuals to do so.
