Letter
from the Board Chair
and Executive Director
Dear Friends of Canopy,
Susan Ellis and Catherine Martineau In 2010, we launched our Healthy Trees,
Healthy Kids! initiative and pledged to add
nature to children's lives by planting 1,000 trees over the course of five years. Weve already planted
close to 900 shade and fruit trees for kids at 27 schools and parks in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto,
and Menlo Park. We couldnt have done it without the generous support of donors, partners, and
dedicated volunteers like you!
Together we are creating a truly grassroots environmental movement. Since 1996, Canopy
volunteers have planted over 3,400 trees in our communities and cared for thousands more young
and mature trees in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, and neighboring communities. Thats an extraordinary
achievement. You can read about our collective impact in 2013 inside this Annual Report.
At Canopy, we believe that local communities are the best guardians and stewards of our green
spaces. That is why our programs
invest in the future of our neighborhoods by helping to create
a robust urban canopy, improve access to nature in underserved
areas, and educate youth about the environment;
Canopy emblemizes
advance public understanding of trees and urban forestry by
the kind of effort we offering a broad array of activities that include hands-on planting
and tree care, free workshops, tree walks, and in-depth information
need to maintain our resources; and
advocate for the local urban forest by providing advice and
deep relationship with expertise to city and school district staff and elected officials,
and by joining with other organizations to lobby for increased
nature and ignite that funding for urban forestry programs.

Growing greener and healthier local communities

Canopys programs protect and grow the urban forest to create greener, healthier local
communities. Our approach is twofold: planting and caring for public trees in parks, along streets,
and on school campuses; and training and galvanizing residents, community groups, businesses
and government bodies to care for the urban environment.

Planting and caring for trees

Canopys staff, Board and dedicated corps of volunteers perform vital, hands-on maintenance of
our urban forest through tree plantings, devoted care and regular monitoring. We plant hundreds
of new trees annually. At the same time, we survey, prune, mulch and water thousands of saplings
young trees during their earliest, most vulnerable years.

Training and galvanizing people

Canopys programs place information and skills in the hands
of community members, volunteers and partners, training and
galvanizing people of all ages to become environmental stewards.
In parallel, we leverage our deep domain knowledge and strong
networks in school districts, cities, counties, and the state to carry
out high-level advocacy for the urban forest.
Our outreach education programs offer something for everyone.
Our flagship environmental education initiative reached more
than 2,000 school children last year and benefitted our Youth Staff. Engaged Kids: 2,100 +
We recently trained a new group of Planting Leadersvolunteers
seeking to learn additional skills and take on a leadership role in urban tree care. Our fourteen free,
newly updated, monthly arborist-led or self-guided neighborhood Tree Walks reflect the evolution
of Palo Altos urban landscape and enable residents to understand their neighborhoods better. The
free online Arborist List helps people connect with tree experts while the Is Your Tree Thirsty?
campaign, telephone Tree Hotline, and online Tree Library equip residents to safeguard their own
trees with good advice and the latest arboriculture science. You can read about all of our programs
online at www.canopy.org/impact2013.
