Ethical, Legal & Regulatory

Issues
By Matthew Pickett
What ethical issues could exist in your work?

In regards to ethical issues that could arise around the main focal point of my magazine
is Culture, as the main focus is people who live in North East the magazine may risk
culture stereotyping, for example the North East people could be stereotyped the
perception of how or the audience may look at them (Grumpy,Criminals, Thick, Chav)
so the magazine may risk targeting individual cultures or stereotyping cultures due to
the way the magazine will focus on the the certain region and the people who come
from the region.
What legal issues could exist in your work (copyright, images,
content)?
In regards to Legal issues that could exist within my product are the possibility of
copyright, in main result of my magazine focusing on the Lincolnshire District I will be
possibly be restricted to get images from all across from the district, so I could have to
use Google Images for which individuals may have copyright to so I could risk that not
all published work incorporated into magazine (Images) is not completely my work.
Who is responsible for regulating print based content?

The regulators of Print based content are IPSO: Independent Press Standards
Organisation, They outline that each magazine, newspaper stay in regulatory
constraints of the Editors Code of Practice (ECP), they also investigate into consumer
complaints if certain breaches have been broken in the (ECP). They have the right to
publish corrections/adjustments if proved to have breached the Editors code of the
Practice, they are also have a standard to which they make sure a magazine/newspaper
is staying in regulatory principle constraints, they require the selected individual
magazine/newspaper to provide (Submit) an annual statement about how they stay in
the constraints of the Editors Code of Practice.
What is the editors code of practice?

The Editors Code of Practice is a set of regulations (Rules) that Newspapers (Sunday
Mail, Daily Telegraph, Daily Standard, The Independent) and Magazine (Radio Times,
OK!, Private Eye, TV Choice, BBC Gardeners World) industry members have agreed to
follow, It set out the standards, rules that any Newspaper/Magazine can be held
account to be the ISPO (Independent Press Standards Organisation) and is part in
contract with IPSO and Magazines and Newspapers it regulates.
How can this relate to your work?

In terms of how I can relate this to my work, I must follow when drafting and editing my
magazine the Editors Code of practise, I must make sure that all information within my
magazine is true and that is follows regulations for me to edit and that it follows the
regime that makes sure that the magazine is fully factual and neither bias or incorrect
to the reader, I must make sure the magazine is not overly opinionated as to (whom,
what and where) it is talking about, also all images must come from me this will make
sure my work is full copyright and it fully fits the copyright regulations.
