1-4-1-OPERATION
1-4-1-1- PRE-OPERATIONAL PROCEDURES
- Make a general visual inspection of the tractor, looking for obviously missing or broken mirrors, windows or other
parts and for fluid or lubricant leaks under or around the tractor
- Check the tires for proper inflation
- Check the door latches and handles for proper operation
- Verify that all necessary maintenance has been performed
All fluids and lubricants must be at their proper levels before starting the engine
WARNING :
never operate any controls from outside the operator's compartment
CAUTION :
Do not attempt to adjust the seat while the tractor is in motion
WARNING :
Do not steer the wheels with the parking brake engaged
NOTICE :
During towing , avoid transmission shifting to limit the shock on the NLG
1-4-1-6-WARNING LIGHT
The upper red warning light on control panel indicate an engine oil pressure or engine coolant temperature failure
the red indicator below , indicate that the contact is on
nut at the end of the lever
1-4-2-2-FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION
The EGS has a mechanical shift lever which passes information (contact less) to the computer
This info together with acquired vehicle speed information is used to shift to the requested gear or to prevent the
while indicating the on the shift lever's display
1-4-2-3-PRODUCT HARDWARE
Basically, two versions of the EGS are available:
The GRIP TYPE and the STANDARD TYPE
Both have a number of common features but most EGS units have a customised control program, giving quite a
range of functional differences
Refer to the application specific EGS description for an explanation of customer specific features
Selecting DOWN :
Rotate the shift lever towards the driver
This movement is spring returned
Selecting FORWARD:
Push the shift lever away from the driver
The forward position is a stable shift lever position
Selecting REVERSE:
Pull the shift lever towards the driver
The reverse position is a stable shift lever position
Selecting NEUTRAL:
Place the shift lever in the centre position
The neutral position is a stable shift lever position
To select forward drive, push the gear lever upwards and push it downwards for reverse
To select a forward gear, turn the knob anti-clockwise and to change to a higher gear, turn clockwise
The engine will only start in the neutral position when the ignition key is turned
Access to the 3rd and 4th gear is only possible after detection of the output shaft rotation
(LED No 8 goes out)
Under load, it is preferable to select the correct gear before setting off for the 1st and the 2nd
For the 3rd and the 4th gear , start in 2nd, then when LED n8 switch off, engage the 3rd gear and the 4th if necessary
Don't wait to have speed to operate this change, because it can cause important shocks to the aircraft or to the
trail
1-4-3-DISPLAY FUNCTION
The EGS has an internal indicator panel for displaying selected gear and driving direction
Below description is applicable for many EGS implementations
Application specific details are described in a separate document shipped along with each EGS unit
1-4-3-1-DIAGNOSTIC INFORMATION
Two types of diagnostic information are considered
ON LINE diagnostics
This information is given during normal driving when something special happens
For example on EGS's with speed sensor one of the indicators is used to indicate standstill
This helps to spot problems with sensor in an early stage before the lack of protection resulting from the failure
can produce damage to the drive train
1-4-3-2-DISPLAY LAYOUT
The EGS uses LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) to give information to the driver
It consists of eight multicolour LEDs, a RED LED and a YELLOW LED
The multicolour LEDS are labelled '1' to '8'
They can light up in one of three Colours: RED, GREEN and YELLOW
These numbered leds are used for displaying both the selected shift lever position and the selected transmission
position
Sometimes they also indicate operating mode and give diagnostic information
The RED LED is labelled 'N' and when burning it indicates that the transmission is placed in neutral
The YELLOW LED is labelled 'T' which stands for trouble-shooting
This Led is while working in one of the three self test modes
1-4-4-MACHINE INTERFACE
1-4-4-1-PHYSICAL INTERFACE
2-1-4-1-1 View on Grip type EGS mounting
The grip type EGS is mounted on the left side of the steering column and mates with popular light switch
assemblies
It can also be mounted using a customer supplied clamp, and two metric M5x20 bolts as shown below
For manual hitching a lock exist for maintain the pin in upper position
- Place the tow bar in position, axed to the hitch
- Knock smoothly the tow bar with the tractor for center it wit the V-frame of the hitch (Take care to the hands of
operators)
The Slow Approach (slow motion) allow to approach the tractor and it hitch to the aircraft towbar, fitted on the
aircraft noze landing gear, outer from the tractor cab (with a better view)
OPERATION
- Activate this function by turning the corresponding knob (REP 2) from the cab
- Now you can use the external command to move forward or backward the tractor and approch the tractor hitch to
the towbar

This is the maximum amount of tractive effort your tow-tractor can exert to overcome the starting resistance of the
trailing load, (the combined weight of the tow-tractor, and trailed load)
This is the amount of tractive effort your tow-tractor can maintain for normal towing duties, once the trailing load is
motion
It must be appreciated that the tractive effort required to tow a load, will vary if :
a) the vehicle climbs an incline
b) the vehicle operates on different road surfaces
Both these conditions must be taken into account before attempting to tow a maximum capacity load
