Instructions for the report and presentation UPSTREAM EQUIPMENTS

1. Introduction
Oil and gas wells produce a mixture of hydrocarbon gas, condensate or oil; water with dissolved
minerals, usually including a large amount of salt; other gases, including nitrogen, carbon dioxide
(CO2), and possibly hydrogen sulfide (H2S); and solids, including sand from the reservoir, dirt,
scale, and corrosion products from the tubing. The purpose of oil and gas processing is to separate,
remove, or transform these various components to make the hydrocarbons ready for sale. For the
hydrocarbons (crude oil and natural gas) to be sold, they must be:
Localized and extracted
characterized
separated from the water and solids
measured
sold
transported by pipeline, truck, rail, or ocean tanker to the user
The oil and gas industry facilities and systems are broadly defined, according to their use in the oil
and gas industry production stream:
Exploration Includes prospecting, seismic and drilling activities that take place before the
development of a field is finally decided.
Exploitation Typically refers to all facilities for production and stabilization of oil and gas.
The reservoir and drilling community often uses upstream for the wellhead, well,
completion and reservoir only, and downstream of the wellhead as production or
processing.
Exploration and Production together is referred to as E&P.

2. Objectives
To describe the fonctions and components of an equipment.
To identify the main technologies involved (type of pumps, drillbit, ),
To explain how it works
To describe the main risks related to the equipment (safety, environment, economic).
To give and understand the main parameters for the control of the equipment or the results in
case of drillbit MWD/LWD.
To present an example of the utilization of the equipment in a Peruvian or a latinamerica area
with the main characteristics and pictures
To show the range of costs of the materials purchase and for operation/or maintenance
To identify the international standards used for the design and/or operation of this kind of
equipment and the important factors used for the design
Any further information you found and consider important to present regarding to the topic

3. Organisation :
Work with free groups (4 groups of 3 students fixed on 08/05) on the following equipment :
- drillbit MWD/LWD : Fernando V, JP, Juan Carlos
- top drive : Royer, Anthony, Henry
- Mudpump unit : Mijhail, Pamela, Carlos
- Rodpump : Victor, Giancarlo, Luis R

4. Contents :

One Report: minimum of 10 pages when you will include the elements described in the objectives
part (paragraph 2). Upload the report on CANVAS before the FRIDAY 02/06 17h00 pm.

One Presentation the MONDAY 05/06 1pm about 15 minutes to 20 mins in order to present and
resume your investigation. Following your presentation, 10-15 minutes of question by the teacher
and the students about your presentation.

Each student will expose and will be evaluate for his exposition and answers. The global evaluation
will be realized by the teacher but the students will evaluate their colleagues too.

If the report is uploaded after the 02/06 5hPM, the note of the report will be reduced by 5 points max
If plagia is detected, the mark will be 0/10 and a report to the Administration will be edited.

Presentation = 1 note / 10 (4 points for the group and 6 points for individual evaluation).
