Studio Arts 3rd Quarter Required Assignment

Special Place Assignment and Self-Directed Portfolio

Ms. Calleja

Assignment- Select a place that has special meaning for you and
interpret your feelings about this location in a visual artwork. The
selected location can be local or a place you have visited while
traveling. You may interpret this location in a 3D model in any
material, a painting, a print, or a drawing. No photography or
collage/mixed media for this assignment. You may work in any style
but your choice of scale, color, materials and composition must reflect
your feelings for your selected location and some element of the
location must be included in the project.
For example, if you select a tropical island you cannot interpret this in
a completely abstract painting of warm colors only.

Project Goal- To work with the idea of interpreting feelings and

memories. To think about how color, composition, scale and texture
selections can create emotion in artwork.

Evaluation- The project will be evaluated as 25% of your 3rd quarter

evaluation.
The evaluation will consider effort, difficulty of concept, craftsmanship,
and creative interpretation and use of materials.

Curate A Personal Exhibition- Select 4-6 of your best works of art

and create a small personal exhibition. You may create and select work
that follows a theme or uses the same materials or you may design an
exhibit that reflects your ability to work in many styles and materials.
Plan how you will arrange and display your art work. Write an artist
statement that explains your work for your viewers. We will review how
to do this in class.
You will begin this assignment during the 3rd quarter and your progress
will be evaluated as part of your self directed portfolio work. The final
evaluation will be for your required assignment grade in the 4th
quarter. On May 12, 2010 we will work with music students to produce
a concert and art exhibition with a reception for friends and family.

Self Directed Portfolio- Create work of your choice in any subject,

materials, and
composition. Mixed media work must be limited to only one project
during the third quarter. Projects must show a finished presentation.

Level one- Two or more detailed projects or 3 or 4 smaller works in

addition to the required project are a minimum requirement.
AP Studio Arts- Five or more detailed projects that interpret your AP
concentration theme are a minimum requirement. You are not required
to complete the assignment above except to prepare your personal
exhibition.

The self directed portfolio, effort, active participation in class demos,

discussions, and critiques, absent/tardy record will be evaluated as
75% or the second quarter evaluation.
