The Yang Qi of the Lungs combines with the Yang Qi from the Stomach to create Wei Qi at the Tai
Yang level. The Wei Qi protects the body from external pathogens. Cold will be especially felt when
there is a lack of Yang Qi at the Tai Yang level. This Yang Qi can be easily replenished with
exercise or by eating warm food because the Lungs work to circulate the Yang Qi delivered by the
Stomach.
Lack of this Yang Qi is felt as chills because of the lack of radiant heat and the inability of the
weakened Lung Qi to control the opening and closing of the pores.
When there is undernourishment or over-indulgence in food weakening the Stomach, and or mental
or spiritual stress weakening the Lungs, the Lungs become deficient. There is then not enough
Yang Qi to clear the chills or enough power in the circulation and radiation of the Yang Qi, causing it
to stagnate. This is called Cold Damage or Tai Yang Excess Heat, and is considered to be a Yang
Excess, though it results from Lung Deficiency.
Overtime this stagnant heat begins to build up and so seep deeper - it is not strong enough to
radiate out. So heat sinks into the Yang Ming meridian.
Miscellaneous disease > (zatsu byo / za bing) > refers to all internal diseases that are not directly
related to an external pathogen. This does not normally result in Tai Yang excess / heat pattern, but
it is possible. When this happens symptoms such as sinusitis, rhinitis, stiff shoulders, upper body
pains, skin diseases, muscle soreness and toothaches, may easily occur.

Shunting Nutritive Qi
This is necessary when there is Yang Ming heat in order to resolve the stagnation, reduce the fever and
increase the flow of Blood and Fluids. The site of the stagnant heat or hard mass is shunted normally to a
depth of 1-2 mm painlessly. The amount of shunting is determined by the number of red blotches > the
greater the number of blotches the more shunting is required.
For miscellaneous diseases hard masses on the Stomach meridian are selected and needled to the
centre of the mass, with the needle held in place until the mass softens.
