It takes time to see these pictures you


can look at them for a long time, they
invite that sort of looking. But more
importantly, I realize that this sort of
picture came closer to how we actually
see, which is to say, not all at once but DavidHockney

rather in discrete, separated glimpses
which we then build up into our DavidHockney PROCEDURES:
continuous experience of the world.

TakePhotos Oneofthebiggestproblems,aswithanyphoto,isifyou
donotgetcloseenoughtowhattheyarephotographing.
Composeaphotowithastrongcenterofinterest.Since
youaretakingpicturesofaverywidearea,youshould DoNOTshoottheassignmentjustasstraightline.You
keepyourcenterofinterestveryclose. needtolookupanddown,ifit'stoolongitwon'tfitona
board.
IfyourcamerahasaProgrammode(P)youmayuseitfor
thisassignment.Ifyoureusingasemiautomaticor
manualcameraremembertouseyourmetertogetthe
correctexposureoneveryshot.Youmustalsomakesure
yourcameraiscorrectlyfocusedforeachshot.
Nevertomovefromyourspotuntilyouredone.Youmay
tiltthecameraupanddownduringtheshoot,butnever
changeyourshootingposition.
Practiceshootingfirst.TheideabehindHockneys
approachistophotographalargescenebybreakingitup
intomanysmallerones.Thinkofyoursceneashavingan
invisiblegridwithoverlappingsquaresplaceduponit.
Beginshootingwithonlyyourwaistturnedthree
quarterstotheleft.Continuetoshootyourfirst

thephotoyoujusttook,untilyoureachapositionwhere
yourwaististurnedthreequarterstotheright.
Begintoshootthesecondrowofhorizontalphotosas

thisrowwiththebottomofthelastrow.
Continuetoshoottheentirescenealwaysoverlapping
bothverticallyandhorizontallyuntilyoucompletethe
scene.
