SPEAKERS

Dr. Ian Stern has been the Director of Archaeological


Seminars and the government certified archaeologist at the
Tel Maresha excavation for 20 years. As a government
licensed tour guide, he has extensive knowledge of ancient
sources. He holds a BA in Near Eastern Studies from Brandeis
University, a Masters in Jewish Education from the Hebrew
Union College, and a Doctorate in Archaeology from Bar lIan
University. Ian made aliyah in 1978 from New Jersey and
served as a medic in the Israel Defense Forces.

Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Hezi Leder headed the Intelligence Branch


at Israel's National Police HO, where he was responsible for
the professional management of diverse intelligence activities
carried out by some 2,500 detectives, intel analysts and
undercover agents. He provided professional support in
intelligence matters to the Police Commissioner and senior
commanders and directed international intel operations and
investigations. Prior to that, in his 28 years of Police service,
he served as Chief of Intelligence and Deputy Chief of
Detectives at the Tel Aviv Police District. He also served as
the Israel Police Attache to the USA and Canada.
Following his service, Brig. Gen. Leder co-founded a company
specializing in business and competitive intelligence in
commercial enterprises, and is currently the chairman of the
Israel Competitive Intelligence Forum (ICIF). Mr.Leder served
in Army Intelligence and holds the rank of Major in the
reserves.

Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld is the Police National


Spokesmen to the Foreign Press. He is currently responsible
for coverage of all major events and terrorist attacks and
corresponds to over 1,000 media agencies worldwide. Micky
represents the Police to foreign delegations and VIPs. He has
extensive experience in the field of counter terrorism.
Superintendent Rosenfeld graduated from Ben-Gurion
University with a BA in Middle Eastern studies and an MA in

Business Administration from Polytechnic University. Born
and raised in London's Jewish and Zionist community, Micky
moved with his family to Israel at the age of 15 and went on to
serve in the IDF Givati Infantry Brigade.

Brig. Gen. Shaike Horowitz has been the Deputy Head of the
Operations Dept. in the Israel Police Force since 2008. He
has been with the Force since 1978. Prior to this position, he
was the Police representative to the National Security Council
in the Prime Minister's Office, the Commander of the Bomb
Disposal Division, and on the anti-terror staff at the Prime
Minister's Office.

Prof. Zahava Solomon teaches at Tel Aviv University's


School of Social Work and was formerly a Lt. Colonel serving
as the Head of the Research Branch in the IDF's Mental
Health Department. Prof. Solomon's research on combat
soldiers in the Israel Defense Forces has raised awareness in
the military, government, and the public at large to the
traumatic effects of combat and of war imprisonment. She has
written extensively on the subjects of combat stress reaction
and post traumatic stress disorder. Prof. Solomon has also
published six books on war-generated psychic trauma.

Prof. Ariel Merari is a retired professor at the Department of


Psychology, Tel Aviv University. He received his Ph.D. in
psychology from the University of California, Berkeley. Prof.
Merari served as Chair of Tel Aviv University's Department of
Psychology (1982-1985). During the period of 1978-1989 he
was a Senior Fellow at the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies,
where he established and directed the Terrorism and Low
Intensity Conflict Program. From 1989 until his retirement he
was the Director of the Political Violence Research Unit at Tel
Aviv University. Prof. He also established Israel's Hostage
Negotiations and Crisis Management Unit and commanded it
for more than 20 years, and in 2002 was appointed Chair of
the Advisory Commission on Combating Terrorism at Israel's
National Security Council.

Amos Harel is one of Israel's leading media experts on
military and defense issues. He has been the military
correspondent and defense analyst for Ha'aretz since 1998. In
this role, he has written extensively about Israel's ongoing fight
against terrorist organizations, its battles during the Palestinian
Intifadah and the last war in Lebanon. Harel co-wrote, with Avi
Issacharoff, The Seventh War: How we won and why we lost
the war with the Palestinians, a 2004 book about the second
Intifadah. Issacharoff and Harel's second book, 34 Days:
Israel, Hezbollah and the War in Lebanon, about the war of
2006 was published in Hebrew in January 2008.

Avi Issacharoff has been the Palestinian and Arab Affairs


Correspondent for Ha'aretz since 2005. Fluent in Arabic,
Issacharoff has an insider's knowledge of the inner workings of
Palestinian society. He has directed and edited documentary
films about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and co-wrote, with
Amos Harel, The Seventh War: How We Won and Why We
Lost the War with the Palestinians, a 2004 book about the
Second Intifada. Issacharoff and Harel's second book, 34
Days: Israel, Hezbollah and the War in Lebanon, about the
war of 2006 was published in Hebrew in January 2008.

Chen Abrahams was raised and resides in Kibbutz Kfar Aza,


located near the Gaza Strip. Until recently she served as the
Director of Resource Development at the Gvanim Association
in Sderot, an NGO that works with underprivileged groups.
Prior to that, she worked at Channel 8, Israel's Discovery
Channel and as the network's director for two years. She also
produced and edited TV Series for Israel's Channel 2 Network.
Abrahams served in the IDF's Air force Intelligence unit, as a
video editor, and is currently studying public policy at Sapir
College, located near Sderot.

Pinchas ("Pinny") Halpern, M.D., is Senior Lecturer in


Anesthesia, Critical Care and Emergency Medicine,
Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv,

Israel, where he is also Chair of Continuing Medical
Education in Emergency Medicine. Dr Halpern is Chair,
Department of Emergency Medicine, Tel Aviv Medical
Center,Tel Aviv.
He trained in Anesthesiology in Tel Aviv and in Critical
Care Medicine at the Ohio State University. Dr Halpern is
a Past President of the Israeli Association for Emergency
Medicine. He is Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee
of Magen David Adam National EMS. He also chair the,
National Taskforces on Emergency Mass Mechanical
Ventilation, and Development of Informatics Policy in
Disaster and Mass Casualty, Dr, Halpern led training
missions in Emergency and Disaster Medicine to Ethiopia,
Uzbekistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Jordan and Poland.Hodan

Col. (Res.) Udi Levi is a Senior Analyst at the National


Security Council, responsible for tracking the financing of
terror organizations, a position he has held for several years.
In this post, Col. Levi works closely with Stuart A. Levey, the
incumbent and first Under Secretary for Terrorism and
Financial Intelligence within the U.S. Department of Treasury.

Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Mickey Levy served in the Israel Police


Force from 1982. He was the Commander of the Jerusalem
Police District, with 4,500 officers, dealing with regular police
work in addition to terrorist activity in the region during the
Second Intifada .. a. Following that, Maj Gen Levy was the
Police Attache and Liaison to the US and Canada. In addition,
he had a number of command positions, and was the
Superintendent of the police counter-terrorist unit, where he
was both a combat officer and in charge of development of
specialized firearms and training of combatants.

Col. (Ret.) Shmuel Zoltak served in the force for 31 years,


during which he has held key positions in both criminal and
counter-terror arenas. Col. Zoltak was the Chief Negotiator for
the Israeli National Police for the last 15 years, where he

managed and resolved hundreds of crisis situations, ranging
from hostage taking and kidnapping to barricade situations
and suicide attempts, both criminal and terror-based. He
specialized in the field of suicide bombers psychology, and
lead a landmark study on the motivations of suicide bombers
and their families. He is an F.B.I. academy graduate in the
field of crisis negotiation, and a senior member of the
International Negotiators Working Group [INWG]. He holds a
master degree in psychology.

Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Arieh Amit served in the Israel Police Force for m
than 25 years. He served as Commander of the Jerusalem District,
involving the protection of life, assets and normal course of operatic
in a city holy to (at least) three major religions. After Sep 11 th , he We
asked to train the Police Corps in USA and business corporations Ii
Macy's and Bloomingdales. Until recently, he consulted the Israeli
Military Industries in the homeland security business including the
national bus protection project.
Amit is a consultant to the Israeli National Security Council that is p.
of the Prime Minister's Office.
In addition, he is a member in the International Policy Institute for
Counter Terrorism in Herzliya.

Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Simon Perry, Ph.D, has been the Co-
Director of the Program in Policing and Homeland Security
Studies, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Institute of
Criminology, Faculty of Law and a Professor in the Graduate
School. Between 2003-2007 he served as the
Police Attache & Liaison Officer to the USA & Canada, Israeli
Police & Ministry of Public Security, and priorto that, he served
as the Commander of Intelligence and Operational Division -
National Unit for Exposing Severe, International and
Organized Crime, the Head of Interpol and International
Relations and Commander of National Drug and International
Operations Unit. Brig. Gen. Perry served in the tank corps
during his military service.

Rabbi Miri Gold, a member of Kibbutz Gezer, was born and
raised in Detroit. A graduate of the University of Michigan and
the Hebrew University, she is the third woman rabbi to be
ordained in Israel. Currently rabbi of Kehilat Birkat Shalom, a
regional Reform synagogue based at Kibbutz Gezer, she is a
board member of Rabbis for Human Rights and has studied
pastoral counseling and spiritual support. Rabbi Gold was
named by The Forward newspaper as one of the five
influential women rabbis in Israel, October 2010.

David Leichman, moved to Israel in 1976 to Kibbutz Gezer.


He has extensive experience and an in-depth understanding of
both the American Jewish community and the varied array of
religious and ethnic communities in Israel. David taught
courses about Israeli society at Tel Aviv University from 1984
to 2000, as well as at Tufts University and the University of
Massachusetts and New England. He served as an
emissary of the Jewish Agency for Israel to the Union of
Reform Judaism. David has played an active role for thirty
years in helping build bridges of understanding between the
Jewish and Arab communities in Israel. He is a founding
member and past Secretary General of the Israel Softball
League and presently is a member of the board of the Israel
Association of Baseball.
