Digital Story Lesson Plan


LITR 630

1. Aligned Standards ILA:

1.2 Candidates understand the historically shared knowledge of the


profession and changes over time in the perceptions of reading and
writing development, processes, and components.

2.2: Candidates use appropriate and varied instructional approaches,


including those that develop word recognition, language comprehension,
strategic knowledge, and reading-writing connections

ISTE:
1.b students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop
innovative products and processes using technology. Students create original
works as a means of personal or group expression.

KTS:
6.1 Uses available technology to design and plan instruction.

6.3 Integrates student use of available technology into instruction.

Common Core:
R.I.1.10: With prompting and support, read informational texts appropriately
complex for grade 1.
R.I.1.7: Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key details.
SL.1.5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions when appropriate to
clarify ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
Sl.1.2: Ask and answer questions about key details in at text read aloud or
information presented orally or through other media.
W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply
some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure.
2. Grade Level:

1st grade Special Education students

3. Time Needed:

2-3 weeks

4. Materials:

Chromebooks, computers, Informational Text, microphone

5. Learning Targets:

Students will be able to...


* Ask and answer questions about key details
*Write an informational text including a topic, details, and a closure
*Provide visuals like drawings or illustrations to describe the information
*Read informational text

6. Procedures: Step One (Day One)

Teacher introduces unit of study: writing informational text.

Class discussion about what makes something informational.

Teacher models process of creating an informational writing piece.

1. Gather information Place on story map

2. Create Story Board including pictures, script on facts, and

captions

3. Teacher shows example of informational digital story

4. Class holds discussion on what they noticed most about

teachers digital story- these components will be teacher

expectations for student made digital story


Step Two (Days 2-7)

Students are guided through identifying their topic, crafting story map, and

story board.

Step Three

Creating digital story. This will happen in stages and students will be finishing at

different times during the 3 weeks.

7. Assessment:

Students will be formatively assessed through the writing process. Teacher

will assess story board, story map, and overall product of the digital story.

8. Accommodations & Modifications:

The lesson will be scaffolded as I do, we do, and you do. The model

approach works best in my special education classroom. I will hold

individual writing conferences with my students and pull small groups to

teach small new skills as the students become ready for them. The students

will have voice to text modifications for the drafting process.
