Introduction:
Khirsara has faced different disasters over last few years. The villagers have lost lives and
property during these disasters faced. There is a growing consensus among the community
that being better prepared would have meant lesser losses of lives and property.

A) Village Profile
Khirsara village has population of 672. It is situated 4 km away from the Morbi- Navlakhi
highway in west-north direction of Maliya taluka, Rajkot district. It has a Gram Panhayat in
the village.

This village has three major approaches. One is in north direction, second access from
south and another in west direction. The south side access connects to another village
named Bodki, which is 4 km. far from this village. The North side access connects to the
main [Morbi- Navlakhi] highway, which is 4 km from this village. The overall settlement
level of this village is 2-3 deep from the main access (Main road).

The climate of village varies from 6.5 to 40.5 C. About 90 percent of the rainfall occurs during the
southwest monsoon, lasting from about June to September.

The total Village land is 540.60 Hectare. Black cotton soil found in the village and its
neighborhood. The texture of village soil is clayey.

Most of the village is dependant on agriculture (92%) while a few of them are in trading
(7%) and government services (1%).

In Village total livestock is 992 and about 94% of them are milching animal.

The total no. of families lived in Khirsara are 172. Out of these, 44 families belong to BPL
class while 2 others belong to SC. The BPL Families are settled in the Indira Awas Yozna/
Sardar Aas Yojna houses, 500 mt away from the center of the village.

B) Hazard and Risk Analysis:

FLOOD [**]:
Morbi (Due to breakage of Machhu Dam) flood filled water outside the village and made it near impossible for the villagers to move outside
the village for first two days. During these two days, people sheltered in village temple and near Patel Vaas. This flood has reported
death of 1 person and 20 animals. It also reported 30 houses damaged due to the flood water.

CYCLONE [***]:
Despite all efforts and precautionary measures taken by villagers, the cyclonic storm hit Khirsara village along with several other villages in
the district. While there was no reported human life loss or damage to agriculture , one could see morbi tiles on the roof of most of the
houses flying due to high speed wind.

EARTHQUAKE [***]:
According to earthquake vulnerability of the area, this region falls in seismic zone IV which is dangerous enough to be careful about.
Khirsara was badly affected during this earthquake. Whole village was devastated. It affected 128 houses out of which 112 were
completely devastated. The damages also include injuries to 6 people and death of 4 cattle.

C) Risk Management: Capacity/Resources


Managing the disasters is all about responding in a collective and planned manner. The
resources available and earmarked in advance do the needful help in managing disasters at
the distress time.

The village has 15 radio sets and 50 TVs. These communication channels would be of
great help in disseminating warning news issued by the state national broadcasters/
Meteorological laboratories. 8 of the villagers have telephones which could be dialed to
disseminate warnings, if any at a faster rate.

At the hour of emergency the gas lights, emergency lights and tarpaulin listed in the
annexure on Village DM Data Sheet would be of great help.

The JCB Drivers Mr. Raidhanbhai Boriya and Bulldozer Driver Mr. Devayat Boria are
expected to play a major role in rescue phase, post disaster. 15 tractors available and the
trucks in the village could be employed for rubble removal to clear blocked roads.

Though the ANM visits the village regularly, there is no other health facility in the village.
The nearest facility is the Sub-center available near Navalakhi port [3 km away]. Though
the chakadas are available in the village, one needs to travel 4 km to catch the state
transport bus on the Morbi-Navlakhi highway.
