ADMINISTRATORSMESSAGE

The very successful 2016-17 school year at Catalina Elementary was


once again Excellent with many fabulous memories. As we reflect back over the
year, there were numerous accomplishments and positive experiences for staff,
students, parents and community members. This is possible because all members of
our learning community worked together to enhance student achievement. A big
Thank-Youisextendedtoallwhocontributedtothesuccessofthisschoolyear!

We are looking forward to the 2017-18 school year with much enthusiasm and
excitement. Again, we look forward to many accomplishments as we all work
together to benefit our children. We are so fortunate to have such a great school
community. To students and staff members who are leaving, it was a pleasure
working with you and we wish you all the best. We also extend to all students and
theirfamiliesbestwishesforasafeandenjoyablesummervacation.

STAFFCHANGES

There will be a number of changes to the staff at Catalina Elementary for the
2017-18 school year. Ms.M.PittsandMs.T.PittswillnotbereturninginSeptember
2017 and on behalf of our school community we wish both of them well in their
futureendeavors.

FOOTWEAR

In September, please provide your child with a pair of indoor sneakers with non
markingsoles. Mostbrandsindicatewhetherthesolesarenonmarkingontheboxor
thesneakeritself.Ifnot,pleaseaskthestoreclerktocheckforyou.


LIFETHREATENINGFOODALLERGIES

In September there will be two students attending our school with life threatening
food allergies. Due to these allergies it is necessary for precautions to be taken at
the school level. We arerequestingthatwhenparentsarepackinglunchesthatthey
avoid peanut butter, kiwi and any food that contains visible nuts. If you would
like a more detailed list of food items to sendortoavoid,pleasecontacttheschool.

SCHOOLSUPPLIES

Alistofschoolsuppliesthatyourchildwillneedattheirnextgradelevelhasbeen
senthomeandwillalsobepostedonourschoolwebpage,addresslistedbelow.If
youhaveanyquestionsaboutthesesupplies,pleasecalltheschool.

VOLUNTEERS

We have been very fortunate over the past year tohavemanyvolunteerscontribute


greatly to our learning community. Volunteers have helped out in classrooms with
students, planned and supervised sports activities, supervised on field trips, served
as members of the school council, presented to Kinderstart parents, warmed-up
lunches, copied materials, prepared and served breakfast, served hot lunches,
delivered recyclables, etc. A sincere thank-you is extended to all those who
volunteeredtheirtimeandservicesinanywaytocontributetoourschoolcommunity.
Volunteers are always welcome at Catalina Elementary. By working together we can
makeadifference!!

BUSSCHEDULE

At the end of August a message regarding the busing schedule will be aired on the
communitychannelandcommunicatedthroughtheSynervoicetelephonesystem.

ATTENDANCE/TRUANCY

Regular attendance at school is very important and the Newfoundland and Labrador
English School District has a policy that stresses the importance of regular
attendance. Many of the students at Catalina Elementary are to be commended for
their great attendance this year. The attendance of other students causes some
concern. It is very important that as parents we encourage attending school on a
regularbasisunlessthereisavalidreasonforanabsence.


CAFETERIASERVICES

In 2017-18 a small number of snack items, milk, juice and water will be available to
the students at recess andlunchtime. Inaddition,everyWednesdayahotlunchwill
be prepared and served by the Parent Support Group at a minimal cost to students.
A list of available items will be posted on the Catalina Elementary webpage
www.catalinaelementary.weebly.com. A hard copy of the available items will be sent
homeforparentstokeepandreferthroughouttheyear.

HOME/SCHOOLCOMMUNICATION

Communication between home andschoolisveryimportant. Thereforeinformationis


provided through a variety of ways. On a daily basis student school bagsneedtobe
checked for newsletters and messages in student agendas. Inaddition,information
is provided through the Catalina Elementary Synervoice telephone message system.
Parents are also encouraged to provide their email address to the school if they
would like to receive correspondence through email. Your email address can be
