Every year, over 60,000 people from all over the world attend the burning man
festival in the black rock desert in the US. The eight-day event starts on the last
Monday in august and ends on the first Monday in September, which is Labor
Day in the US.
Every year, burning man has a different theme. Some past themes are time,
good and bad, the body, and hope and fear. People make art, play music, and
wear clothes related to the theme. There are also many activities for people to
do-all related to the theme.
The burning man festival is a very large-about one-and-a-half miles (almost 2.5
Km). Many people use a bike to go from place to place. Also, festival-goers
cannot buy anything at burning man, except some drinks (like water, coffee, and
tea) and ice. For this reason, people bring their own food and drinks. They also
share things with others.
On the last day a large statue of a man is burned. It marks the end of summer
and the burning man festival.
FANTASTIC FESTIVAL
There are lots of fantastic festivals around the world that you can visit. For
example, on the last Wednesday in august every year, 30 000 people travel to
Buol, in Spain, for la Tomatina. At this festival people throw tomatoes at each
other-125 000 kilos of them! Theres also a similar festival in Italy, where the
people of the town of Ivrea throw oranges at each other for three days. And
every July 150 000 people go to Gilroy, in California, for the Gilroy Garlic
festival. Here you can eat garlic bread, garlic chicken, garlic chocolate-and
garlic ice cream!
Of course, not all festivals are about food. The UKs favorite music festival is the
Glastonbury festival. Only 1500 people were at the first Glastonbury festival in
June 1970, but in 2011 there were 177 500 people there. And of course theres
carnival in Brazil, which is in February or March every year. In cities all over the
country, people dance in the street to samba bands all day and all night. Every
year about 5 million people enjoy carnival in the streets of Rio de Janeiro. And if
you want to go to a really big festival, theres the amazing Kumbh Mela in India.
The Kumbh Mela festival in 2013 went on for 41 days and 70 million people
were there!
