Thepreservativeefficacytest(PET)isamicrobiologicalevaluationofaproduct'sabilitytokillorpreventthegrowthofmicroorganismsoveraperiodof
time. This test does not check the ingredients of product or test the suitability of the product for a given application, the purpose is to ensure the
preservative system in the product ensures bacteria are not allowed to grow, inline with EU regulations. A Preservative Efficacy Test (PET) is only
requiredwhenaproductcontainswater.Whenaproductcontainsnowater,bacteriacannotgrowandthereforethetestisnotrequired.Thedefinitionof
waterincludesfloralwatersastheyharbourthesameabilitytoallowbacteriatogrow.

Why do I need a Preservative Efficacy Test?

Forgetting the law initially, it is always a good idea to perform a microbiological evaluation on your cosmetic products to ensure the efficiency and
efficacyofthepreservativethatyouhaveinyourproduct.Understandingthepreservativeefficiencywithallowyoutosellyourproductswithconfidence,
understandingthatnobacteriawillgrowinyourproductthatcouldcauseharmtotheconsumer,whetherthebacteriabepresentduringproductionor
attainedduringtheproduct'slifetime.

UntilJuly2013itwasanoptionalrequirementtoperformaMicrobiologicalPreservativeEfficacyTest(PET)onyourproduct(s),butwiththeadventof
the new EU Cosmetics Regulations it is now a vital part of your cosmetic product safety report (CPSR). For this reason in order to legally sell your
productswithintheEU,youwillneedtoobtainaPETforyourproductbeforeitissignedoff.Thereareacoupleofexceptionsandthesearedetailed
furtherdownthepage.

How is the Preservative Efficacy Test Performed?

OurtestingconformswithEuropeanPharmacopoeia(Ph.Eur.7)testingstandards.

Thefirstimportantstepistoscreenyouproducttoensurethereisnoinitialcontamination,thishelpstoensureyourproductionfacilities,proceduresand
ingredientsprovideadequatesafeguardandprotectionagainstbacteriaandfungus.

Ifanycontaminantsarefoundinyourproduct,wewillletyouknow.Youcantheneitherresubmityoursampleorwecaninvestigatefurthertoattemptto
identifythebacteria/fungusinyourproduct*.

Onceyourproductpassesinitialscreening,westarttheMicrobiologicalPreservativeEfficacyTestingofyourproduct.

IfyourproductpassestheMicrobiologicalPreservativeEfficacyTest,wewillthenissuewithatestingcertificatetoconfirm.Ifyouareusinganoutside
assessorforyourCosmeticProductSafetyReportthenthiscertificateshouldbeforwardedtoyourassessor.IfyouareusingNaturallythinkingforsafety
assessment,thenwewillpasstheassessmentinternallyprovidingyouhaveorderedaCPSR.

Why do some Products require Microbiological testing and others do not?

If a product contains water, then it will require testing. This includes floral waters and other ingredients whose composition includes water. Bacteria
growsinwaterandthereforeapreservativesystemhastobeinplacethatcankillanybacteriawhichispresentinmanufactureorsubsequentlyplaced
intotheproductthroughcontaminationi.e.whentheuserputstheirfingersinapotofcream.

Productswhichare100%OilandWaxbaseddonotcontainwaterandthereforebacteriacannotgrowinthem.Bacteriacanexist,butisunabletogrow.
Theseproductsdonotrequiretesting.Ifthelikelihoodhoweverthatinaproductsuse,watercouldcontaminatetheproduct,itisadvisabletohaveyour
producttestedandaddapreservative.Thesemaybethecaseinsaltscrub.

Our testing service is not an advisory service, we will not advise on your submitted formulation, we will test your formulation to EU Pharmacopoeia
standardsandadviseyouoftheoutcomeattheendofthetesting.Ifyourproductfails,wemayofferyouatourdiscretionadviceastowhyithasfailed
andwhatcouldbedonetorectifytheproblem.Thisadviceisofferedwithoutwarrantyandisnotpartofthetestingservice.

Bysubmittingyourproductfortesting,youdeclarethattheproductyousubmitistotheexactspecificationofyourfinishedproductandistothesame
specificationandstandardasthefinishedproductyouwillmarket.

Refunds
Byagreeingtoourtermsandconditionswhenplacingyourorder,youareagreeingthatthisisacustomisedserviceandthereforeyourordercannotbe
canceled.Onplacingyourorder,yourtestingwillbescheduledintoourtestingschedule.

Onceyouhavepostedyourproductfortestingandwehavereceivedyourproductfortesting,wecanoffernorefunds.

Return of Product
Whenyourtestingiscomplete,wecannotreturnthetestedproducts,whethertheyfailorpass.

ThebacteriawhichareinjectedintoyourproductsaretobehandledbyaClassIIlaboratoryandassuch,weareresponsibletoensurethewasteis

Ifyourtestingfails,youwillneedtosubmitanewbatchofproductfortesting.Yourtestingfeeincludesonlyonetest,soyouwillneedtopayagainyour

passes.
