When it comes to giving inmates jobs, one local jail has found a way to not only
save money but also give the inmates something to be proud of. "Obviously we
grow our own food here and we are trying to expand the level of programs we
offer inmates in Walton County. We know that for every dollar you spend on
programs there is a four dollar return on investment and were trying to do busi-
ness smart here," said Sheriff Michael Adkinson. The Walton County Jail has
had a farm program for several years and is now in the process of expanding onto
an additional 55 acres adjacent to the jail. "So the 55 acres that are adjoining our
campus, we are trying to expand to possibly add a tilapia operation where we
grow fish internally, chickens, cows. We've even discussed some orchards," said
Sheriff Adkinson. Currently, the land surrounding the facility is used to farm
produce such as carrots, cabbage, and beets, among other items that are used to
feed the inmates.

Greetings from the Mayors Office ..
I gave the 2017 State of the City Address on Thursday Night
June 22 and it can be read on the City of Freeport Website- it
will bring you up to date on what has taken place of the past
year pertaining to the city and its future. A permanent
Northwest Florida League of Cities Award for the Municipal
Official of the Year 2017, was presented to me on June 22 nd
by the President of the League Mr. Dick Rynearson (Mayor
of Fort Walton Beach) and the Executive Director of the
Northwest Florida League of Cities Jenny Anderson of
Tallahassee- what a great honor to be selected by my peers
for this award.
Susan McMinamin was present at the last meeting to update
the council on her accomplishments in the Seniors National
Olympics and representing Freeport, Congratulations to her a
job well done as well as her accomplishments.
The budget workshop dates have been set for the month of
August and will be announced each week as to time and
additional information, the budget will be worked on by the
Department Heads, Mayor and the Financial Officer and City
Clerk. The city pool punch list from the renovations have
been completed and so everything has been accomplished
with regards to the pool and is up and running every day
except on Wednesdays. The FAYSA Youth association will
be using the old concession stand behind the city hall to help
store their supplies for this coming year, they in turn will be
doing the necessary renovations to the building. Effective
immediately the council voted to do away with themselves
serving as liaisons for the different department so now it will
be the responsibility of the department heads to bring in to
the mayors office and any necessary information will be
presented to the council at the regular council meetings
unless it is necessary for a special meeting to be called for
discussion. A reminder that the city hall will be closed on
July 4th in celebration of Independence Day and will reopen
on July 5th. Coming up very soon are the city elections which
will take place on July 11th and will be held at the Freeport
City Hall, 7:00 am-7:00 pm., please come and cast your vote
for the candidates of your choice to hold office for the next
four years. In the meantime, if you have needs that the city

Two DeFuniak Springs police officers have been reinstated two years after they were
terminated and accused of harassment and racial discrimination of a fellow police
officer. DeFuniak Springs police officers Anthony Kaiser and Rick Bobblitt have been
ordered reinstated by labor arbitrator Jeanne Charles Wood. The officers will receive
back pay and benefits.

Hypoglycemia is a condition characterized by an abnormally low level of blood sugar (glucose),

the body's main energy source. Hypoglycemia is not a disease itself. Like fever, it is an indicator
of another health problem.
Hypoglycemia is commonly associated with the treatment of diabetes, but according to research-
ers at Mayo Clinic, a variety of conditions can cause low blood sugar in people without diabetes.
Immediate treatment of hypoglycemia involves quick steps to get the blood sugar level back into
a normal range, either with high-sugar foods or medications. Long-term treatment requires iden-
tifying and treating the underlying cause of hypoglycemia.
Similar to the way a car needs gas to run, the body and brain need a constant supply of sugar
(glucose) to function properly. If glucose levels become too low, as occurs with hypoglycemia, it
can cause heart palpitations, fatigue, shakiness, anxiety and sweating.
Left untreated, hypoglycemia can cause confusion, abnormal behavior, blurred vision, seizures
and loss of consciousness. People with severe hypoglycemia may appear as if they're intoxicated.
They may slur their words and move clumsily. A blood test can usually identify hypoglycemia as
the cause.
Initial treatment of hypoglycemia is drinking juice or regular soft drinks, eating candy or taking
glucose tablets. If this treatment doesn't raise the blood sugar and improve the symptoms, contact
a physician right away.
For a person with diabetes, the effects of insulin on the body are drastically diminished, either
because the pancreas doesn't produce enough of it (type 1 diabetes) or because the cells are less responsive to it (type 2 diabetes). As a result, glucose tends to build up in the
bloodstream and may reach dangerously high levels. To correct this problem, a person takes insulin or other drugs designed to lower blood sugar levels.
Too much insulin in the bloodstream can cause the blood sugar level to drop too low, resulting in hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia may also result if, after taking diabetes
medication, a person does not eat as much as usual or exercising more normal. A physician will work to find the optimum dosage that fits an individuals regular eating and
activity habits.
Hypoglycemia in people without diabetes is less common and may be caused by drinking alcohol without eating, which can block the liver from releasing stored glucose into
the bloodstream, causing hypoglycemia. Hypoglycemia often occurs when a person has not eaten for a long period, but sometimes hypoglycemia occurs after meals because
the body produces more insulin than is needed.
Treatment depends on the symptoms. Early symptoms can usually be treated by consuming 15 to 20 grams of a fast-acting carbohydrate. Fast-acting carbohydrates are foods
that are easily converted to sugar in the body, such as candy, fruit juice, regular not diet soft drinks, or glucose tablets or gel. Foods containing fat or protein aren't
good treatments for hypoglycemia, because protein and fat can slow the body's absorption of sugar.
