leadtovariousoperaonalproblemsinthemachinelikehighshavibraon,highbearing

vibraon,highBabbimetaltemperatureofthebearingetc.Toavoidtheseproblemsitis
necessarytomaintainthecatenariesofthemachineduringereconandsubsequent
realignment/overhauloftheunit.Manymesitisobservedthatthoughthealignmentof
rotorsarewithinlimitbutthecatenariesasawholegetdeviatedfromtheprescribeddesign

valueofthemachine.Inordertoavoidsuchderivaonaneedisfelttodeviseaprocedure
whichshallensurerotorsalignmentalongwithpropercatenariesofthemachine.

Duringrstfewyearsoftheoperaonoftheunitthepossibilitytothedisturbanceofthe
catenariesaremuchmoreduetoselementofthefoundaonframe.
Ineachoverhauloftheunitthecatenariesofthemachineistobecorrected.TheL.P.front
andL.P.rearpedestalaredirectlygroutedherewithoutanyseparatebaseplate.Assuch
anycorrecononliingorlowering.Thesepedestalsarenotveryconvenientsoifnecessary
therotormaybeliedorloweredwithrespecttopedestalsealboreandrequired
catenariesmaybeachieved.Inextremecasesthesepedestalsmaybeevenregrouted
duringmajoroverhaulsoftheunittocorrectthecatenariesofthemachine.
HORNDROPTEST

Byhorndroptesttheloadingofthecasingoneachcornerisdetermined.Thehorndroptest
isrepeatedatvariousstagesinindividualcasingi.e.rstwithoutconneconofanypipe
linesthehorndropreadingsarerecordedthenitiscomparedaerweldingofinlet,outlet
andextraconpipelinesetc.ThehorndropreadingsareveryimportantinHP&IPcasing.
Firsttheproperhorndropreadingsaremadewithoutconneconofanypipelinesandthen
thereadingaretakenaerweldingofallpipelinesonHP&IPcasing.Assuchtheinuence
ofthesemajorpipelinesarenocesoneachcornerofHP/IPcasingbycomparingthehorn
droptestreadings.Thehorndroptestwillindicatethequalityofworkduring
assembly/weldingofpipelineswiththeHP&IPcasing.

Thisisaveryimportantcheckandmaycauseseriousprobleminoperaonofthemachine
likehighvibraoninthemachinefailureofbarringgearinhot/coldmachine,obstrucon
duringexpansionofmachineetc.Inhorndroptestadropismeasuredonanindividual
cornerofthecasingwiththehelpofadialindicatorbyremovingthesupportofindividual
cornerandthenitiscomparedwiththeoppositecorner.Assuchthisgivesanindicaonof
indierentloadingofthecasing.InRussiandesignmachinethevalueofdirectdynoxmetre
loadingsarerecordedinplaceofthishorndroptest.
SWINGCHECK
Theswingcheckisthemeasurementofradialthrowcausedduetocouplingfacegeometric

formofthetworotorcoupledtogether.Thisismeasuredonoppositeendofthecoupling
andatthefreeendoftherotor.Thehigherswingcheckvaluemaycausehighersha
vibraon,higherbearingshelltemperatureetc.Thevalueofswingcheckdependsonaxial
runoutofcouplingfaces,thediameterofthecouplingandthelengthoftherotor.During

InamulrotorTurbineGeneratorsystemitisessenaltomeasuretheswingcheckvaluein

bothextremeendandwheretheweightoftherotorsarelight.Forexample200/210M.W.
KWUmachinewithRussianGeneratorandstacexcitaonsystemtheswingcheckvalues
aremeasuredonHProtorfrontendonly.In500M.W.machinetheswingcheckvaluesare
measuredinH.P.frontendandonexciterrearend.Aerhavinggeneralexperienceof
numberof200MW&500MWunits,anecessityisfelttomeasureswingcheckvalueonIP
rotorfrontendalsoforbeerresultsduringoperaonoftheunits.Thiscanbedoneinially
duringereconwithtemporarycouplingboltsonLPIPcouplingbeforereaming/honingof
coupling.Anyvariaoninswingcheckvaluesmaybecorrectedwithoutanyhesitaon
duringereconofmachine.Anycompromiseatereconstagemaycauseseriousproblem
duringoperaonoftheunitandanycorreconbecomesmuchmoretediousalaterstage.

Thecorreconmaybecarriedouteitherbyinterchangingthecouplingposionorby
correcngthecouplingfacesbyscrapping/cunginconsultaonofDesigners.
