Instrumental Assessment Plan

I must first start by saying that I have long avoided putting together a formal
assessment portfolio because I felt that it could injure grades and hinder positive
relationships with students. However, after class discussion I am more eager to get
involved in this process than I ever have.
I would like to create a four year assessment portfolio that contains the
following pieces:
1. A list of ensemble repertoire that the student has performed.
2. A list of the solo repertoire that the student has performed or at least
prepared.
3. Recordings of the students playing. This would include the following:
a. Scale tests
b. Solo literature
4. Reflective writings based on performances that they have heard of
recommended solo artists on their instrument. I provide them with a who
should I be listening to list.
5. Reflective writings based on reflection of ensemble performances.

What I need to do:

1. Set up a drop box system for my students. I know my school tech person
would be overjoyed (seriously) to have this conversation with me.
2. We have a hand book with the circle of fifths (I just read it counter-
clockwise) that also includes the order of sharps and flats as well as
instrumental transpositions. This needs to be updated to include arpeggio,
third and chordal studies.
3. Create an accessible library of recommended solo literature at different
levels.
4. Create a progression of pathways for the student to navigate through these
exercises.
