Vocabulary Activity

Human sliding scale

Explanation: The teacher begins with a yarning circle to acknowledge the confronting nature
of some of the terms, content, and examples, and to assess the students mental well-being
before undertaking the activity. The teacher then organises the students into groups of seven-
ten and provides each student with four pieces of A4 paper. These sheets of paper contain a
key vocabulary word, a definition of a key vocabulary word, a historical example, and a
human rights article. The pieces of paper that each student receives do not relate to each
other. The students will be required to work together to match the key vocabulary with the
correlating examples, definitions and human rights articles. After sticking the correct set of
papers together in a poster format, the students will have to arrange themselves into a human
sliding scale that graphs the severity of their terminology (which includes words such as:
massacre, genocide, treaty, trade, war etc.) from more peaceful at one end of the spectrum, to
more violent at the other end of the spectrum. After the students and teacher are satisfied with
their scale, the students will be asked to stick their posters on the classroom wall for future
