Optimizing Learning in College: Tips From Cognitive Psychology

Adam L. Putnam, Victor W. Sunghasettee, Henry L. Roediger

The article Optimizing Learning in College: Tips From Cognitive Psychology by

professors Adam L. Putnam, Victor W. Sunghasettee, and Henry L. Roediger is about what
college students could do differently to help them pass their classes. They specifically focus on
study habits. The authors use their research in cognitive psychology and experiences in the
classroom to offer up suggestions that may work. One of the professors findings is that student
retain more information when they study in increments and not all at once. They also found
that practice quizzes are a better way to test a students knowledge than reading the textbook
over and over again.
Another strategy they mention is that answering questions about a reading before
actually doing the reading is a good way to start studying a topic. It gives students a chance to
figure out what they know about a subject already before they start introducing themselves to
the new material. This article provides somewhat of a tutorial on how to study through college
in a way that makes them successful. All the suggestions have been proven through research
and successes found in students who followed the strategies given. By following these
strategies given, professors Adam L. Putnam, Victor W. Sunghasettee, and Henry L. Roediger
believe college students will optimize their learning throughout their college experience.
