In my opinion, for the leadership category, a company that we choose which is Maybank had

applied a theory of The SunTzus Art of War which is The general who is knowledgeable in
military matters is the controller of the fate of the people and the guardian of peace or advocate
of crisis for the nation. SunTzu stated that, only a commander or leader who owned a variety of
experience or knowledge about the military ways and strategies is able to protect a nation safety
and always keeps nation peace. Other than that, a commander or leader who owned with variety
of knowledge in military matter also control the fate of the people in the nation to make sure
everyone was safe and protected.

The other company which also applied this SunTzus theory is Apple.Inc. The cofounder and a
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Apple.Inc and former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the
Pixar Animation Studios, Steve Jobs who was born in San Francisco. There was one of the most
unforgettable event for Apple.Inc which was Steve Jobs saves Apple.Inc from nearly bankruptcy
to most valuable company in the world until today. At 1985, IBM had surpassed Apples sales,
Steve Jobs was falling out with Apples CEO, John Sculley with the reason of Steve Jobs had
made a damage against Apple company then Steve resigned to follow his own interest. Steve
started a new software and hardware company after leave Apple called NeXT, Inc., and he also
invested in an animation company which is Pixar Animation Studios.

With the help of Steves management style, Pixar had become wildly successful. In Pixar, with
his management style, Steve Jobs had developed loyalty from many team members. Steve Jobs
wants to be a best leader for his team, he always motivate his employee and he give more
attention on the teamwork of his employees. Finally, with Jobs work mantra and ethics,
innovation is what distinguished a leader and a follower. At 1997, management of NeXT was
floundered and they sell its own operating system to Apple bought with $429 million, and Steve
Jobs had returned to Apple as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) (Biography.com , 2017). Steve
Jobs had formed his new management team, and he is working for annual salary of only $1 a
year. With Jobs management and leadership, finally Jobs revitalized the Apple company and put
Apple back into a track. Under his leadership, Apple had developed variety of innovative and
high-tech devices with stylish design that caught an eye of the consumers such as iPod, iPad,
iPhone, MacBook and etc (Elaine J. Hom, 2013).
Steve Jobs was a real life leader as well as he became an all-around role model for many people
in their life. Before the success of the Apple.Inc, Steve Jobs had faces a lot of hesitations, Jobs
tried to learn and gained the experience from those hesitations. With his experience and
leadership, he pulls up the Apple company from nearly bankruptcy to now the most valuable
company in the world. Other than that, with the experience grown up at San Francisco and his
world travel, Steve Jobs found his inspiration in designed the Apple products. Moreover, Steve
Jobs willing to work for Apple for annual salary of $1 a year before he put back Apple back into
track. According to SunTzus theory which is The general who is knowledgeable in military

for the nation. Steve Jobs was like a general of Apple.Inc. who is experienced and
knowledgeable in management that control the fate of his company and saves his company from
nearly bankruptcy to now a most valuable company in the world.

For the leadership part, Malayan Banking Berhad or Maybank had applied a theory of SunTzus
Art of War which is The general who is knowledgeable in military matters is the controller of
the fate of the people and the guardian of peace or advocate of crisis for the nation. The founder
of Maybank, Khoo Teck Puat who was a Malaysian Chinese that born at 1918 in a wealthy
Malaysia family. His family members was knowledgeable and expert in variety of fields. For
example, his father, Khoo Yang Thin had founded a trading business and built up an investment
groups of plantation and agricultural properties. Other than that, Khoos elder brother was also a
main investor of early Malaysian banking ventures. At 1933, Khoos elder brother had become
one of the major shareholders of Overseas Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC).

Since Khoos eleder brother was a major shareholder of the OCBC, then Khoo had went to
work for OCBC as a simple bank clerk. At 1950s, Khoo had raised his position into senior
executive. However, Khoo recognized that future advancement of his prospects was limited in
OCBC. Khoo want to seek for a better future advancement of his prospects. With his experience
and knowledge, Khoo had applied for the banking license and he decided to open his own bank.
With the granted license, some of others OCBC executives who also seek for opportunities also
left the bank and follow Khoo to form a Malayan Banking Berhad at 1960. With the following of
the experienced executives from OCBC, Khoo had being good in using all of these experienced
former executives from OCBC. After that, Malayan Banking had quickly became commonly
known as Maybank. The name of Maybank had given an opportunities as a main source in the
creation of the consumer in Malaysia. At 1960s, with the Malaysias independence, the
economics of Malaysia had grown rapidly, Khoo had recognized the potential for this new
market and as expected this opportunities had created a rapid growth of Maybank through 1960s
and 1970s. With the rapid growth of the company, Maybank had added more than 20 branches
per year. In 1962, Maybank was successfully listed on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange (Bursa
Malaysia) (Maybank, 2013).

In 1964, Khoo had established a Mayban Trustees Bhd (MTB) to provide trustees products and
services. In 1973, Khoo tried to extend the Maybank again, Maybank forming its own
investment banking subsidiary which known as Aseambankers Malaysia Berhad which was a
representative of Asian & Euro-American Merchant Banking (Malaysia) Berhad. After two years,
Aseambankers successful expanded its business through establishment of Kota Discount Berhad
which is a joint venture with Aseambankers. At 1986, Maybank had acquired a majority shares
of Kota, Kota then changed its name into Mayban Discount Berhad in 1989. With Khoos
experienced leadership and management style, Maybank was always in a right track and success,
Khoos employee was always motivated with the leadership of the Khoo and the success of the
Maybank made Khoo himself as one of Malaysias wealthiest tycoons (ReferenceforBusiness,
2017).

After that, Khoo tried to seeking for the opportunities and expanded Maybank to an
international level by the mid-1980s. For example, Maybank begun to enter Singapore markets,
Maybank also planned a strategic market for bank at Indonesia and opening new branches at
financial capitals such as New York and London. In 1980s and 1990s, Khoo continued to
seeking for new opportunities, for example, at 1987, Maybank had established Mayban
Securities Sdn Bhd to provide stockbroking services. Other than that, in 1990, Khoo took an
advantage of the new Malaysian Offshore Banking Act and established variety of new
subsidiaries, for example, Maybank International Ltd., Mayban Trust (Labuan) Berhad and
Mayban Unit Trust Berhad. In 1993, Khoo started to expand Maybank into insurance market by
established Maybank General Assurance Bhd. Moreover, Khoo also began new effort to increase
the presence of Maybank in the Southeast Asian region. For example, in 1994, Maybank had set
up two branch offices at Lae and Port Moresby. Then, Maybank had entered a joint venture with
PT Bank Nusa Internasional in order to made the name of Maybank became more commonly
known in Indonesia market and later the Maybank successful acquired control of the joint
venture by holding nearly 94% of shares. Other than Indonesian market, Maybank also entered a
smaller markets such as Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar and Uzbekistan. In
1997, Philippine government had passed legislation by allowing the foreign-owned banks to gain
majority control of domestics banks. Maybank had took this opportunities to entered the
Philippines market by joint venture with Philippine National Bank and buying 60% control of
former Republic Savings Bank. After that, Maybank had renamed it as Maybank Philippine Inc.
(MPI) and later take control of the enterprise. After the Maybank successfully gained a full
control of the enterprise, MPI had become the first and only foreign-controlled bank in
Philippines and MPI boasted nearly 60 branches office across Philippines.
In the late 1990s, there was an economic crisis swept through the Southeast Asia. Maybank
were required to take part in vast consolidation with others banks in the country since it was a
countrys largest bank. From the process of take part in vast consolidation, there are some
acquisition gained by the Maybank, Maybank gained a control of a numbers of small banks and
two larger banks which is Pacific Bank and PhileoAllied respectively. These acquisition had
maintain Maybanks position in Malaysia as Malaysias top banking group. On the other side,
these acquisition also boosted rank of global banking industry of the Maybank. Due to these
growing of position of Maybank, Maybank successfully received a license to enter into China
market by open first branch office in Shanghai.

Back to Malaysia, Maybank had established Maybank Takaful Bhd. in 2002 in order to
promoting Takaful insurance products which compliance with Islamic law. Unfortunately, in the
late of 2004, Maybanks extension faced a problem which Maybank failed to take over Bank
Permata of Indonesia since its lose in a takeover bid. But Maybank does not retreat with this
failure but step forward and shrugged off the frustration of Permata, Maybank placed its hope by
tried to find a new expansion target. In the March of 2005, Maybank received an approval to
launch a takeover bid of BinaFikir Sdn Bhd through its own subsidiary, Aseambankers. The
acquisition maintain the Maybanks position as a Malaysian and Southeast Asian banking
powerhouse. To now, Maybank still a Malaysias top banking group which its successfully
gained a lot of milestones with Maybanks management groups excellent leadership and
innovation.

The successfulness of the Maybank is all because of Khoo and Maybanks leadership. At first,
Khoo use his knowledge and experience working in OCBC to start his own small bank with
license, then Khoo and Maybank keep looking for opportunities to extent their bank to become a
top banking group in Malaysia and even overseas. Even they faced some of the snug in the
process, but they didnt retreat but they step forward to looking for other opportunities to
consolidate their company. With their knowledge and leadership, they always can acquired a
control from their joint venture. Khoo and Maybank had successfully applied the theory of
